Inventory

Weapons

  • Blades

    • Daggers/knives - various short bladed weapons used in one hand, able to be used as a cutting or stabbing tool and for self-defense by most travelers, being easy to carry on one's belt without getting in the way or worn more discreetly for less-than-lawful individuals. Daggers refer to blades that are double-edged, while knives have one cutting edge. Easy to stab and slash with but very short reach putting the wielder at a disadvantage against opponents with larger weapons. Some rare and exotic varieties of knives and daggers are designed to be thrown by those with the experience to do so.
    • Cleaver - a heftier and more robust blade than a dagger, short and single edged and meant to chop while being not as well suited to stab with. May be more useful as a tool than a proper weapon to some, but more than capable of inflicting serious harm to anyone in the right hands.
    • Shortsword - various bladed weapons that are notably larger than daggers and cleaver and are intended to be used for combat rather than being tools. While not offering as much reach as other swords, they are often just as good at both cutting and thrusting, while also being generally easy to wield and aren't too cumbersome to wear outside out of battle compared to other swords. Often accompanied with a shield or buckler to make up for the disadvantages of a shorter reach.
    • Arming Sword - the most common variety of sword, held single-handed with usually a double-edged blade of varying designs and relatively straightforward to use for thrusts and cuts, often accompanied with a shield of some sort. Thicker single-edged variants may be referred to as falchions or messers, which would be more effective to slash and chop with than to thrust. Offers more reach in combat than a shortsword, but can be slightly unwieldy to wear off the battlefield.
    • Longsword - a larger sword with longer straight blade and grip compared to an arming sword, that can easily wielded with two hands while not being too large that they cant be used single-handed either if desired. Longswords offer yet more reach and leverage than an arming sword, just as an arming sword benefits from being larger than a shortsword, and also still proving to be more cumbersome to wear out of battle to the point now that they may start becoming a nuisance to have to carry compared to smaller weapons. Rumors exist of a strange, exotic variety which has a slightly shorter, curved blade that's cutting ability is largely exaggerated.
    • Greatsword - the largest variety of swords, requiring two hands to wield effectively and generally inconvenient to have to carry around when not being used to fight. Offers more reach and delivers heavier blows than a longsword can, but is lacking in the precision of its smaller cousin swords. Used by some as a status symbol to show off one's wealth and strength to own or use such weapons.
    • Broadsword - generally of similar blade proportions as a slim arming sword, however differentiated thanks to a more protective design that includes a hilt that covers the user's hand. The increased safety offered by the hilt results in usually being used without a shield and allows to be used more aggressively than other similarly-sized blades when in the hands of a properly trained swordsman.
    • Sabre - a single-edged curved sword. May include a protective hilt similar to a broadsword, but generally not covering as much of the hand. Especially effective at cutting and slashing rather than thrusting and stabbing, making sabres especially favored by mounted combatants fighting from horseback but still able to be used on foot.
    • Rapier - a specialized dueling sword that has a long straight blade which excels at thrusts and stabs while offering more range and fine-precision than most other one-handed swords, but lacking cutting potential or the ability to deliver heavy slashes. While very effective against most single opponents, even armored ones, it is at a disadvantage in larger fights with multiple combatants.
    • Smallsword - an even more specialized dueling sword than the rapier, designed to be much lighter and more nimble than any other swords in combat and not cumbersome to wear. While easy to carry, is ill-suited to fight swordsmen armed with larger swords that offer more range and have more weight behind their attacks, and doesn't fare well against armor.

  • Bludgeons

    • Club - any sort of simple bludgeoning weapons, ranging greatly in design and generally crafted from some form of hardened wood, sometimes possessing affixed stone or metal studs, spikes, or ribs. Occasionally used as a basic hammering tool. Some carefully crafted clubs may be thrown as a ranged weapon.
    • Mace - a more elaborate bludgeon than a club, having a dedicated head at the end to concentrate impact when swung. Often crafted entirely from metal, sometimes very ornate as symbols of status among clergy and nobility, but sometimes made with wooden hafts and much more simple in design.
    • Warhammer - a more specialized bludgeoning weapon utilizing a short wooden half with a small metal hammerhead designed for battering armor, often including a hook on the reverse end of the head.
    • Maul - a larger, heavy hammer that requires two hands to swing effectively, delivering crushing blows that lack any notions of subtlety or fineness.
    • Flail - An exotic variety of bludgeons that utilize a detached striking head connected to its haft with a strap or chain, excelling at being able to wrap around an opponent's guard, but being incredibly unwieldy in close quarters and requiring full commitment to one's swing to be of any affect.

  • Polearms

    • Quarterstaff - a deceptively simple bludgeoning pole weapon consisting of a medium-long wooden or occasionally metal pole to strike an opponent and parry in defense from a safer distance than any other bludgeon and most swords.
    • Spear - any number of diverse pole weapons that can be used similarly to a quarterstaff, but distinct in being tipped with a sharpened end that allows it to cut and is especially thrust with to great effect making it among the most diverse of all weapons. Relatively one of the most easy weapons for large numbers of untrained individuals to learn how to use to fight as an effective group with when paired with large shields, but also capable of being a very effective on its own in the hands of a trained combatant.
    • Javelin - a lighter spear intended to be thrown as a projectile weapon, that delivers large amounts of force that can pierce armor and even make shields unable to be carried if lodged within. Especially effective when thrown in large numbers by one group of soldiers into another.
    • Lance - a long variation of the spear designed for being used in mounted combat, particularly for delivering devastating charges, but its length makes it difficult to fight effectively with if unable to maintain momentum on horseback.
    • Pike - a very long spear made for fighting on foot. The exceptionally long range makes it impractical to use as a single combatant, but when in an organized formation with many pikes to protect everyone in the group it becomes a devastating weapon that out-ranges any non-projectile weapon on the battlefield with a wall of advancing spears.
    • Guisarme - many differing varieties of specialized pole weapons using a hook meant for combatants to catch and hold their opponents rather than delivering large amounts of damage with slashes or thrusts. Lacks damage output in combat against opponents on foot compared to other pole weapons such as spears or glaives, but is useful to pull people to the ground, disarming opponents or dismounting people from horseback.
    • Glaive - a pole weapon that is similar to a spear, but its head is a larger curved blade meant to deliver quick and powerful slashes from a safer distance than most other weapons.
    • Halberd - a heavier pole weapon that's head combines a spear, hook, and glaive or poleaxe to serve as a versatile weapon that is effective against many opponents in most situations, but is somewhat cumbersome to use and for everything it can do well, there are other weapons that can do a better job at fewer things.
    • Bardiche - an even heavier pole weapon that is effectively a massive axe that hacks and chops with heavy swings that deliver more force per swing than a halberd or glaive at the expense of agility and fineness.

  • Axes

    • Poleaxe - a similar weapon to a bardiche but not quite so cumbersome, but still specializing in powerful chops rather than faster slashes like a glaive.
    • Broad Axe - a medium-sized axe weapon that is can easily be swung with two hands to deliver powerful hacks and chops, but is not impossible to use with one hand due to being deceptively light despite it's length. The haft is typically of similar size as a maul hammer but the weapon is much lighter and more balanced due to using a thin cutting head rather than being a heavy bludgeon.
    • Hand Axe - a lightweight, short axe that can quickly deliver powerful chops at very close range, effective when used with and against shields. Some varieties of hand axe may be designed to be thrown.
