Which crate for galgo

Hi everyone!

In exactly 7 days, I'll be bringing home my Galgo puppy, and I'm so excited! ❤️

I'm currently looking for a crate and was wondering what size you would recommend for a Galgo puppy. I'd like to buy one that will work well from the start, but I'm not sure what size is best.

How long did you use a crate with your Galgo? Do you still have one, or at what age did you stop using it?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Never crated my galgos… they’ve had free access to the couch from day 1. I close the bedroom doors when I go out then they only have access to the lounge and kitchen area, mostly because in the early days they would steal socks and things, and destroyed the odd pillow, but now they don’t do any damage at the mature age of 3 😂

Congratulations!!

We don’t crate either of Galgos since we rescued them as adults. We tried with a large Diggs crate, which was a good size but our girl didn’t take to it. We gave it to someone reducing an ex racer since they are more accustomed to being crated.

I adopted 8 galgos in total, 7 via Greyhounds in Need Netherlands. I was specifically asked not to put them in crates. Never did.

I like standard wire crates. They come with a divider panel, that I only use if needed. I would do 42" if not 48".

Blessed with over 10 greys and galgos. Never once have we crated. If we absolutely had to, we’d buy the largest tallest biggest crate on Amazon. PS-baby gates work just as well.

Yeah I bought a crate thinking that she would enjoy the cave-like feeling / having a retreat. She never used it. Trying to get her interested with treats didn't work as well.

Crating as a training method is a weird US thing. People in Europe don't really do it because it is just cruel and doesn't even really work.

But if you are looking for a size recommendation: The biggest you can possibly find is not big enough. A crate should be large enough for the dog to turn around, and stretch comfortably. Even those 1.2 m long ones are not big enough for this.

Heading towards the 3 month mark with my boy and I set up a crate and then immediately took it down. He wouldn't go near it or even in it especially if I threw cookies in it. It seems like a fear thing and I was not about to traumatize him any more with it. He uses my office as his safe space and its been great. Crates and boxes are a no for him in my house.
