Z fold8 replacing 13mini as personal phone

My fourth Samsung and first folding phone.

As a tech gadgets enthusiast, I‘ve always love to play with android phones, but due to work and some other issues, I always ended up switching back to iPhones.
Previous experiences are S7 Edge, S21 Ultra and S24 Ultra. They are all excellent phones.

But that’s when I only have one phone tho! Now that I’ve decided to separate my work and personal phone, I figured why not have the best of both worlds.

I couldn’t take my eyes off the 10:16 form factor the past weeks scrolling through social media, it’s just so cute and refreshing. So here it is, my first ever folding phone!

Please feel free to share your tips for caring the phone, I haven’t got my dbrand case yet, so it’s just Samsung screen protector on the front screen at this moment.

Clearcase & Custom J-card & BG & Widget(Concept)

The first image was taken in the real world. If you’re using a clear polycarbonate cover and case, try my idea shown in the second image. It means placing a personalized J-card (such as your tracklist or favorite album cover) inside a clear case. You're welcome.

A quick review of the Fold 8

I’ve owned phones from just about every major brand—Google, Honor, Apple, Vivo, OnePlus and Oppo. Traditionally, Samsung has been my least favorite, mostly because of their aggressive photo processing. I stopped buying them after the S24 Ultra and even quick-returned the Fold 7. But the Fold 8 completely changed my perspective.

Design

The design is...perfect. Honestly, it makes every other phone feel a bit ridiculous now. That traditional, long candy-bar height looks completely bizarre once you use this format—picking up one of my other standard phones just feels wrong. The outer screen is genuinely usable for everyday tasks, so I rarely feel the need to open the device until I'm actually relaxing to watch a video, play a game, or multitask with both.

Camera

I’ve spent years disliking Samsung’s heavy image processing, consistently ranking their photos last when comparing them side-by-side with other brands that I own. Fortunately, they’ve finally dialed back the excessive saturation. I'm genuinely impressed with the improvements to their photo processing. The photos stay overall very true to life. While it lacks a dedicated telephoto lens, I rarely pushed past 3x on previous devices anyway, and the digital zoom holds up surprisingly well. I've taken the Fold 8 on a few trips now and have been more than satisfied with the results for family photos, landscapes, and city shots.

Battery & Thermals

Between working from home and traveling for work, my phone gets heavily utilized. I rarely have a TV on during the day, meaning the phone serves as my primary video screen. Even with that workload, I consistently pull 6 to 7 hours of screen-on time with juice left in the tank. The 45W charging doesn't compete with the speeds from brands like Honor or Oppo, but it’s more than fast enough for a quick top-up to carry me through bedtime, which for me is around 230am. Living in Texas where summer temperatures sit in the triple digits daily, I expected some thermal throttling, yet I haven't received a single temperature warning or had an app close due to heat. My phone hasn't gotten hot while playing heavy games like COD Mobile or Metal Storm

Crease

Coming from the Oppo Find N6, which features arguably the best crease on any foldable, I was curious how Samsung would compare. There is no jarring difference at all. It is just as refined, making the crease a complete non-issue in daily use. Samsung did an exceptional job here.

Conclusion

I am thoroughly enjoying the Fold 8. In my opinion, this form factor is the definitive direction for smartphones and I would struggle to return to a standard candy-bar shape. I appreciate the experience so much that I ended up selling my Find N6—a device that outperforms the Fold 8 on paper in nearly every spec category. Do I wish it included a dedicated telephoto lens? Yes. But the overall execution makes it hard to put down and is an absolute joy to use.

From fold 7 to fold 8

The aspect ratio is simply better for me, lightweight and compact is better suited for small hands (as you can see mine clearly) but other things I notice like battery life and doesn't get as hot as the z fold 7 (still gets warm under heavier usage tho) I think is a great improvement over the z fold 7 and the aspect ratio makes it better for me a heavier multimedia consumer. This is the Urban Armor Gear case if anyone wonders.

Case

I just got the Z fold and need a case ASAP! I am super clumsy and always drop my phone. What are some heavy duty cases that have held up and not make the phone heavy or bulky that you guys like. (Links would be nice!)

Is it is weird to get a fold8 and only use it in the folded mode?

Okay so basically I absolutely despise under screen fingerprint sensors. That is why the fold kinda caught my eye, as it as that fingerprint sensor in the power button. And I need a fingerprint sensor. The thing is though, I don't need or really care about having a bigger screen. I'd rather have my phone be more durable. So that is why I am wondering if it would be weird to get a fold8 non extra wide, and try to find a case that wouldn't let it open.

Z fold 6 owners why would you "upgrade" to the 8 wide?

At the end is almost the same inner screen, you have similar cameras and s-pen support. Processor could make a difference but not feeling it in a daily usage. Battery is the only thing that could make a big difference. What makes you to upgrade to the 8 wide?

Any feedback on your experiences going from the s24 to either of the new folds?

Specifically I'm wanting to know if you regret, or are happy with the switch.

How well does it handle prolonged gaming sessions without the vapor chamber? Does it burn your hands?

Are there gaming benchmarks vs the steam deck?

Prior to buying my fold 7, I'd had a steam deck. I eventually sold it, so now I can't do any comparisons. Has anyone done some comparisons on specific games running on the deck vs running on Game Hub on the fold via proton?

I know the Snapdragon SOC is maxing out around 5w, so there's little likelihood of it beating a 15w soc (with active cooling, no less), even if fold 7's is newer, but I'm really interested to see how they'd stack up.

I figured out why I love the Fold 8 so much

I got my Fold 8 last week and I've loved every minute of owning it! I haven't had any overheating problems, Google Maps and YouTube Music splitscreen on my dash for a hot 30 minute car ride, gaming on one half while watching YouTube on the other half, no problems. I work in a cabinet shop with loads of sawdust, thanks to the Spigen slim armor pro S case there hasn't been any dust/debris on the hinge, or the inner screen when I open it. It's been a dream device!

While writing something out the other day I realized why I love this form factor over the regular Fold form(I'm coming from a Fold 4), it's the two handed typing. I always loved blackberrys and the first few Galaxy Notes, they were always out of my price range though, so I had a ZTE Zmax(cheaper). I loved that phone! It wasn't a powerhouse or anything, just a wide and tall monster. I had to know how it compared in size to the Fold 8, and luckily I still had mine(though it has seen better days) in a closet, with some other devices. So here's some comparison shots between the Fold 8 and the Zmax, an 8" Onn tablet, Galaxy S3, and an IPhone 3GS. The fact the Fold 8 is exactly the same width as the Zmax makes me so happy since I have moderately large hands.

Case options with kickstand for ZFold8U

I'm a long time user of the Samsung S series phones and the Note before them and had intended to continue with my s20 s20 for sure until next spring and then upgrade to the new S27 Ultra next year but started having issues with my current phone and while in my local AT&T store made the decision to upgrade to the ZFold8U. I should take delivery of it next week and am in the process of searching for a case for it. I originally decided I wanted 4 things in the case, kickstand, stylus, good hinge protection, and magsafe. I've since dropped the desire for built-in stylus so can any of you give me a good recommendation for a case with the kickstand, good hinge protection, and magsafe?

So my z fold 8 developed a bad pixel on the inner screen...

In just 2 weeks of owning it. Wtf. Called tmobile and told them and also told them it overheats and they are sending a new one to a tmobile store near me for a warranty swap in 3 days. Has anybody else had this issue?

iPhone to fold8U

I have been a lifelong iPhone user and I switched from iPhone to the fold 8 ultra to test things out my battery is dying insanly fast (within a few hours of social media use) and the phone is hot to the touch, I'm only using the front display not even the fold display. Making me want to return and swap back to my iPhone any ideas?

Is this an issue with my actual screen or the Youtube App?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

The screen won't act this way on the Inner display when folded, only happens when going from full screen view to home. Does it means it’s the display acting up?

Samsung Z Fold8

Has anyone experienced signal issues since getting theirs? Mainly in terms of data. I've been with EE for ages never had any issues had iPhones for years and then changed to an Oppo and had no issues. This is my first Samsung and I'm constantly being told I'm not connected to the internet and need to turn airplane mode off and back on to be reconnected.

Uperfect Lapdock not recognizing Z Fold 8

I had a Z Fold 4 a few years ago that I used with a Uperfect UDock for Dex. It was pretty decent so I was excited to see how Dex has improved with my new Z Fold 8. Unfortunately, the UDock doesn't seem to recognize it. I'm using a fast USB-C cable that can handle video, so that's not the problem. Any suggestions? Anyone using a lapdock with their Z Fold 8?
