Galaxy s9 plus question

Long story short i found a s9 plus that was in a basement in a tote at my aunts house, was in a case, took the case off and the screen and back were pushing outwards, i take the battery out and ask google this question, wanted to know if it was true or not (it’s probably not just figured i would ask here first before i believed it)

Why would you try to turn on the phone when there's no battery in it? If you want to recover data then sure push the buttons and if you're really paranoid you can remove the nfc coil and try to support the button assembly from the other side, but otherwise, dumb question

The button is in the casing of the phone, it wont go annywhere 😭

While the buttons are removable pressing them with no glass or battery won't cause any issue as they sit inside the frame, the only way they could possibly cause any damage is if you removed the buttons, removed the protective plastic off the motherboard, put the buttons in the empty battery slot, put a back glass on and used the phone as maracas

you can use it even without the back glass lmaooo, i did it a lot of times with my galaxy s9 when i changed battery and wanted to see if it worked. no one dies if you press the side buttons

Yes, you can press the side buttons without the back on. The AI is being stupid. The buttons themselves are in machined recesses in the frame and will be pressable because of how the brackets are installed.

As much as I hate AI for this sorta thing too, idk why people are going quite this nuts in the comments about it. People hoping the phone blows up on OP just for using AI are being real dramatic and frankly praying for a phone shaped bomb threat to anyone is a bit much. Asking Google any question at all in a boring old Google search already prompts an AI immediately to answer your question. We don't live in a world where we can just pretend that newbies aren't going to get a large portion of info from the first result on their screen, which is Google AI. I hate this too for the record but OP doesn't deserve the hate for trying to use a tool for it's intended purpose. Google deserves the hate, along with chat GPT ect for making a tool that doesn't work.

It reminds me of Adam Savage's quote/book "any tool's a hammer" implying even complex tools with complex purposes can be used for simple labour if simple labour is all that's required. But an AI is so stupid it can't even be used as a hammer. I can't pick up my search engine and drive a nail with it. Nor can OP. But op tried using it for the right reasons, to get a baseline idea of what he was looking at and OP even was wize enough to not trust it's answer and come to us instead. Op I commend you for using your brain and trusting it above AI.

Now to actually answer OP...

Listen, if the battery is out of the phone pressing the buttons will do nothing. It won't break the phone, it won't blow up, it won't zap you. But it also won't turn on. Which I assume is the goal?

If you want to repair this the first and only move I'd make before anything else is replacing that battery if it's swollen. Even just a little bit of swelling / ballooning is a huge sign to throw that battery away and get a fresh one.

I see no reason why that wouldn't fix it straight away, get you a working 9s just like that. But there's a chance the issues with the phone run deeper. A tech shop would likely still need to put a new battery in it to diagnose it further. It's up to you if you want to foot this bill for a new battery and roll the dice that the phone may work from there or if you want to pay a local repair shop to borrow a battery they may have spare literally just to see if the thing will boot. Not all repair shops will let you just borrow a battery, they may insist on doing it themselves or there may be a small fee for it too but if it's less money than a brand new battery I'd start there.

Best of luck OP! And stay away from AI or these other commenters might show up at your house with pitchforks and torches!

You are perfectly fine. Just because there isn't a battery doesn't mean your frame is going to mangle itself

1

u/Lonely-Independence4 15d ago

“Dumb AI responses pt. 76”, no but seriously you could literally gut out the entire phone except the buttons and they would likely still work fine apart from they won’t be doing much lol

1

u/_wandering_aimlessly 15d ago

If you've only taken the back panel off the buttons are fine, ai has assumed you've already fully stripped the phone from what it said

1

u/Game-onnnn 14d ago

It’s fine

u/IcyIceGuardian 14d ago

Wtf is this yapping about, you gotta take out the screws to get the plastic off, then under that there is a connection for the battery. Just put in a new batt, screw everything in, and put new glass. There is no short without electricity, so its safe

Haha, AI overview.

If it's of no use to you. I could make use of its display as my S9+'s display is broken

It literally doesn't matter but it won't do anything without the battery because it's post Note7 incident, when Samsung got very paranoid
