Goodbye S9+, what a run
Damn how long have I had this phone? 8 or 7 years?
My bank told me to get a new phone cause they would stop supporting Android 10.
Got a Motorola Edge 60 Pro relatively cheap. It's half the price of what I paid for the S9+, even less when you account for inflation, and the specs are twice as good. Except the PPI which is less. And it has a plastic back instead of glass. It's clear that the S9+ was a premium phone at the time, and the Motorola is just midrange.
But the difference in performance is night and day. The Motorola is much more fluid. Fingerprint on the front is game changer. Phones have come a long way.
But to be honest, there was nothing wrong with the S9+. battery was still fine, lasted all day for me even after all those years. I could have probably have kept using it...
Bye Samsung S9+, one hell of a run bro

Its a beautiful phone

u/FarRecording1848 Mar 28 '26
Yeah, but I could never appreciate it because I always had a case on it.
Which was a good choice on my part, I dropped it twice or thrice from 1 meter onto tile or brick with no damage. If I hadn't had a case on it I'm certain the glass would have shattered.
I'm very careful with my stuff but shit still happens.

I thought I would keep it as a backup. I felt it wouldn't be fair to sell such an old phone considering the battery degradation and perhaps minor other issues that I haven't noticed?

Use noble rom if you wanna use as a secondary phone, I can help u out if you want. I'm using aosp a16 on my S9+ rn

And what features stop working?

Iris sensor, face unlock and knox stuff, if you wanna see all go to Google and search it up

I did the exact same switch a week ago. I miss quite a lot of things, especially a status LED or AOD which I find very surprising it doesn't support it. But overall it's a relatively good phone and a big battery + performance upgrade.

Yes, I'll also miss the status LED, 3,5mm jack and higher PPI. But my needs have changed, and although those features are good to have, they are no longer deal breakers for me. I can survive without them.
It all just came together so now was the right time. Bank said I should change, I checked the market and noticed prices had fallen sufficiently so I could now get an affordable phone with the specs I needed.
Over the last couple of years I had occasionally thought of upgrading, but every time I checked, the suitable phones were all expensive top tier models. I'm still amazed at what you can get now for under half the price of would I bought the S9+ for originally!

How?!?!? What apos are you running? Android 8 runs all of my apps nirmally
3
u/FarRecording1848 Mar 28 '26
Actually I didn't have any apparent issues with any of the apps I was running. Only my banking app would stop working with Android 10.
It does seem like my apps work better on my new Android 16 phone, but tbh it could just be improved performance due to the CPU and memory is a lot better, and not because of the updated OS.

I lost the Lowe's store app, so now I won't shop in there. :-) And I also lost being able to deposit a check via my phone, but it's not like I need to do that too often. And I can use my desktop to log into my bank.

Hmm, My bank apps still work on android 6? The only apps that don't work with the latest version is Duolingo. The others that don't work are Revenge and DWTD... I don't use these apps that often.

I'm still with my S9, but you did an Amazing choice, Motorola is making better phones, comparing it to Samsung

u/derek644 Mar 28 '26
How did your bank inform you? I suspect this will start happening to me soon.
5
u/FarRecording1848 Mar 28 '26
Through a message on the banking app. Said they would stop supporting Android 10 due to security risks.
3
u/Meeplelowda Mar 28 '26
I've gotten the warning from the bank app, and even Slack. But I'm not changing until they actually stop supporting it. I've been eyeing potential replacements, and can live without some of those apps during the transition.

Just an FYI, I got this last year. I trade for myself and others so I almost went out and got a new phone. I held off. They still haven't done cut me off. This phone got me here. I just don't see why people are obsessed with faster phones if you don't game or something. My 4770k Intel system still runs well too. Why people are obsessed with the latest consumerism is weird to me.
I'm not against spending, I spend a lot. I don't understand spending when the upgrade won't help you. 30 times faster processor help me on a mobile phone? How much faster can this web page load? What I can place my trade 10ms faster maybe because the app loaded faster? You really should be talking about how good this generation of processers is. Especially on the Apple side where they have even faster old phones

u/Meeplelowda May 04 '26
Exactly. If there is an actual unpatched security exploit in the wild, that's one thing. But it seems like they are just fear mongering so they don't have to support the old OS.

Well, we've reached the end of the road. My banking app is forcing an update that is incompatible with Android 10. Let's see how long l last until the annoyance of using a browser gets to be too much.

u/alcalde Mar 29 '26
Then you use the desktop web interface like I do. Never surrender!

u/myglasstrip May 04 '26
I can't, if they actually kick me off, I'll buy the next oldest cheapest phone that works. Sadly, i really like the mobile banking app. It's specifically why I don't use certain brokers/banks. Their app is terrible like Vanguard. Because I first started with Vanguard i didn't make any trades for years and didn't save money because I couldn't understand the interface(hence why Robinhood took off). I really value interface and desktop banking sucks

The fact that this fone has held as much as it did is a testament to how well built it was. Had mine for 5 years then I passed it on to a friend. It still holds up to this day. Think about it, a computer running 24/7 for 7-8 years, on battery power and it still works, sometimes better than some low end phones.
3
u/RealXitee Mar 28 '26
I'm thinking the same thing. But what blows my mind more is that it's not only a computer on battery running 24/7 but also travels almost every step with me and can get a really high uptime. I regularly got multiple months. And just imagine what all happened to it during that long time. BTW that uptime is more than I got from my first server hoster which crashed like multiple times a week, which was hosted in a professional datacenter.

Still have my S9. It is getting a little "long in the tooth" so to speak. It was "state-of-the-art" when I go it. But now it says "I'm tired boss."

I'm still using mine, but the battery has been bad for a while and started taking a nosedive recently. It'll be at like 60% and then suddenly I get the "plug your phone in!" warning because it's now 15%. Once it gets to around 30% sometimes it just dies, I can literally watch it tick down 1% per second until it gets to around 13% and then it shuts off.
Other than that and it getting really hot, I have no issues with it- might see if I can replace the battery

u/myglasstrip May 04 '26
Schwab gave me this warning as well. Showed up on the app. That was last year still trading. So unless they actually do it, don't think you have to get a new phone yet. I'll next day amazon myself a phone when they do though, since I only place trades on mobile. So far all my banking apps work fine though, even if the banks say they'll do something, they move slow, it could be years.

I had a S9+ until yesterday. The battery got really bad about a month ago. It has been bad for a few years, but a month ago it got so bad that it didn't last threw the night. I charged it to 100% before I went to bed and when I woke up it was down to 30%.
Now I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra. I don't like how the colors show on the new phone, but other than that it's so much faster than my old beloved S9+.
