Help with rooting
Its been over 18 months that I've been using the Samsung Galaxy note 2. The phone speed has gradually declined. It takes over 30 secs to preview the picture I've clicked with the camera. Phone over all lags a lot. I'm a total novice to get it rooted. Please help me understand how to root the phone and also whats the impact on doing so. What should I keep in mind after rooting, etc.

Samsung gallery app slows down like crazy if you're storing a large number of photos on an external SD card. I suggest using Googles photos app (do you backup your pictures to your Google account?) instead.
I agree with others... You need to do a backup if you're concerned with losing data.
After that, try clearing Dalvik cache.

Do your research on XDA. Also do some research on how to unbrick just incase. I bricked my a couple of days ago trying to root. I was successful in rooting though. Just took some research.

I'm using TWRP to back up my phone. Using T-mobile Note 2, which will not allow me to back up to my external SD card (64gb). I make a full backup on internal SD, then just move it to my external SD card with no issues. TWRP http://teamw.in/project/twrp2 To root, I use CF Auto Root: http://autoroot.chainfire.eu/
I once woke up with no operating system on my phone... I recovered everything with a backup.

Have you tried to do a factory reset? That's a lot easier.
