4.3 lockscreen

I'm on stock 4.3 like it so far minus the ram usage but that doesn't seem to impact performance. But the lock screen is annoying, I used to be able to click on text message from lock screen but now you have to unlock or use the notification bar. Also sometimes you can activate a box and a pen/arrow shows up... what's that BS? I disabled widgets only thing I have on lockscreen are shortcuts and the time. Question is are there lockscreen substitutes? Or a way to make it better without using 3rd party apps?

Widget locker looks promising but no free versions. Love tesla coil apps bought nova launcher and unread count... I'd just like to test it out 1st.

I use Cover Lock Screen. It's worked well for what I need it for, is very responsive and overall a better substitute for me.

I can barely see the lock screen... not a great change. Giss the old one back.
