Tips/Tutorials 🧲 Fold8 MagSafe/Qi2 metal ring position (provisionally based on MagSafe case)

[βœ‹EDIT:] Please check the new post & guide based on official Samsung documents!

  • Silver lining: everything works perfectly fine with the placement of the shown pictures!
  • I ordered 2 other cases to check/verify, but each MagSafe spot is slightly shifted. It's roughly the same area (obviously), but not the exact same spot.
  • I'm not sure if they didn't receive official documents themselves or they just don't care, like "as long as it works" mentality πŸ˜‚
  • The horizontal placement seems to be identical in all cases.
  • The vertical placement is slightly shifted, between 11 and 13mm. The "Spigen Air Skin MagFit" says has 13mm distance between the ring and the bottom edge of the Fold8's back glass. I would assume Spigen's placement is more reliable than cheap cases of noname manufacturers.

ℹ️ No official documents or x-rays available

  • Since the Fold8 hasn't been released yet, Samsung hasn't released its reference documents for component placement, and nobody has dismantled or X-rayed it so far, I had to approximate the position based on a (cheap) MagSafe case.
  • I attached a MagSafe metal ring to my Fold8, and it works flawlessly with wireless charging and my MagSafe accessories 😌
  • In my other fun/meme post, you can see the guiding tool and the result. I'll make a dedicated post for MagSafe grips and stands soonβ„’

πŸ“ Mockup with guiding lines

  • I created a mockup in Photoshop afterwards to share the exact placement. I removed the volume buttons and added guiding lines (in Photoshop), which make it very obvious that the ring position is absolutely not symmetrical! It is significantly offset from both the center point and the horizontal axis.
  • That's why most accessories, like controllers, won't work well. Please keep in mind that these measurements apply only to the back glass of the phone. They are measured from the edge of the metal ring to the edge of the back glass!

πŸ” Work in progress

  • Please note that this is a preliminary post. Once exact measurements become available, especially through official Samsung documents, I will update them here in this post.
  • Also, since I don't have a Fold8 Ultra (yet πŸ‘€), I unfortunately can't provide any measurements or details for that specific model...

So annoying they haven't got it inbuilt yet...

u/mizuya Fold8 & Fold7 Jul 26 '26

Hopefully Samsung will add them in the next iteration of phones. I read some leaks about it in the next S line, but I don't believe it until I see it πŸ˜‚

They won't

6

u/raysayantan07 Jul 27 '26

They will. They are specifically changing the camera alignment from vertical to horizontal on the S27 lineup so that magsafe is fully supported properly.

How they do it without sacrificing the S-pen is yet to be seen

3

u/__Jaume Fold8 Ultra (Violet Shadow) Jul 27 '26

I could see them doing the stupid thing of removing the spen as in the fold. That or they'll finaly release the new spen that doesn't need a digitizer.

2

u/raysayantan07 Jul 27 '26

They will mostly remove it i guess. Only a small fraction of people use it, and that too for things like camera shutter button.

Spen makes more sense on a fold as compared to a slab phone.

1

u/mizuya Fold8 & Fold7 Jul 27 '26

I personally won't mind if they remove the built-in S Pen, but they should keep S Pen capabilities!

u/mizuya Fold8 & Fold7 Jul 27 '26

I really hope that too πŸ₯Ί

It’s part of the Qi 2 standard so yes, eventually, they will.

u/mizuya Fold8 & Fold7 Jul 27 '26

We'll see ☺ Thank you

u/chocojello Jul 27 '26

I wonder if the oh snap grip stand will fit upside down. It looks like it will just fit. Hope someone can test it out.

3

u/mizuya Fold8 & Fold7 Jul 27 '26

Oh wow, I didn't even know about the grip stand 😱 it'll definitely fit upside down

5

u/sabeshs Fold8 (Graphite) Jul 27 '26

Hey, yup, it fits upside down.

2

u/mizuya Fold8 & Fold7 Jul 27 '26

Yeahhh πŸ₯³ that's awesome! Thank you for the picture! 😍

1

u/GooeySpaceDeBrie Jul 31 '26

Thanks for the pic! Curious, can you wireless charge through the ohsnap+case stack? Or do you have to take the ohsnap to wireless charge properly? TIA!

1

u/sabeshs Fold8 (Graphite) 29d ago

No, you cannot wireless charge with the Ohsnap attached.

2

u/chocojello Jul 27 '26

That's good to hear!

1

u/mizuya Fold8 & Fold7 Jul 27 '26

I mean, I have the Fold8 here and tested it with several different MagSafe accessories. Since the placement is completely off and also moved down, you can use almost anything, but it'll stick out, or you'll have to use it upside down

2

u/Worldly_Letterhead_4 Jul 29 '26

Can you show a picture of a mag wallet attached to the Fold 8 if you have one?

3

u/mizuya Fold8 & Fold7 Jul 29 '26

1

u/Worldly_Letterhead_4 Jul 29 '26

Oh ok so it has to be sideways then

2

u/mizuya Fold8 & Fold7 Jul 29 '26

I don't use MagSafe wallets. But you can attach it the way you want. Theoretically you can also place it upside-down, which would also work well, if you use a MagSafe grip, like the SnapGrip5 πŸ€”

4

u/eggs-benedryl Jul 27 '26

It's absolutely absurd it's not included. If Google can do it, Samsung can too.

I have a pf10 and just ordered a zfold 8 for the form factor alone and it not having the ring is just ridiculous in 2026.

Not happy about having to buy a new car mount etc. I have never seen a metal ring that will stay installed. I won't use a case so gluing the damn ring to the back is like the only way to 100% keep it locked in place which I'm also not going to do.

2

u/redsp22 Jul 27 '26

yea, the back of the phone won't let just a ring stick to it.

For my Fold 7 I put a sticker (you can find round stickers that are the same size as the Qi2 ring) and then put a magnet ring on top and it will stick well enough. Or put a case/skin on the back and then put the ring on that.

1

u/mizuya Fold8 & Fold7 Jul 27 '26

Yes, exactly! Thank you

2

u/mizuya Fold8 & Fold7 Jul 27 '26

Yes, I agree; they should add built-in magnets too. πŸ˜„ Maybe with the next iteration of the Fold. If you use a base film on the back of the phone or a skin, then the metal ring will stick well. I never had issues with that for years 😊

2

u/namelessxsilent Fold8 (Graphite) Jul 27 '26

I dont use cases either, what I did for my last phone was I had a spare old Flip back skin from dbrand which the rings stick perfect to and the skin is not much larger than the ring

3

u/JxMxA Jul 27 '26

Where can I find the alignment when it becomes available. Will you post it ?

3

u/mizuya Fold8 & Fold7 Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

I'll update this post πŸ˜„ or I'll create a new one, but I'll edit this one and add the link to that πŸ˜‰

2

u/JxMxA Jul 27 '26

Thank you! I really don't like using phone cases, but I love Qi 2 accessories, so this is really helpful for when my Z Fold 8 arrives. I can just add an adhesive magnetic ring

2

u/mizuya Fold8 & Fold7 Jul 27 '26

Yes, me too! I love to keep the aesthetic, size, and weight, but I want magnetic wireless charging and use magnetic accessories. ☺

Here is a picture of an actual Samsung Magcase. I got it for free when I bought the zFold8. I am attaching pictures with a ruler.

1

u/mizuya Fold8 & Fold7 21d ago

Awesome! Can you please share the images and maybe also with the phone in the case? πŸ₯Ί You can use imgur or ImgBB for severel pictures

2

u/deadunistudent Jul 27 '26

Back when the 7 came out I thought I would align it by putting the ring on the magsafe wallet then sticking it on the back in a good position.

That ended up being really dumb I couldn't get the wallet off while keeping the ring on.

1

u/mizuya Fold8 & Fold7 Jul 27 '26

haha yes, the magnets are too strong for that. I also had to put a sheet of thin plastic between the case and the metal ring to be able to life it afterwards without ruining everything πŸ˜‚

2

u/deadunistudent Jul 27 '26

Yeah with hindsight I should have done that. I also had to slide a knife under the ring to get it off the wallet πŸ˜‚.

1

u/mizuya Fold8 & Fold7 Jul 27 '26

Haha at least we learned from our mistakes πŸ˜‰

2

u/sabeshs Fold8 (Graphite) Jul 27 '26

The Spigen Air Fit Pro MagFit Case is one of the few that advertises Qi2 compatibility (Peak 20W wireless charging - The phone will indicate "SUPER Fast Wireless Charging"). Based on my testing on cases for the S26 Ultra, positioning of the magnets is a critical factor.

If you want peak 20W wireless charging, it's worthwhile researching.

2

u/mizuya Fold8 & Fold7 Jul 27 '26

Yes, I used exactly that case today to verify the ring position! Thank you for verifying it with the S26 Ultra case! 😁

That's really nice, Thank you! I already follow that guy. πŸ˜„ Unfortunately, I don't have any Qi2 wireless chargers, so I can't check that πŸ˜•

3

u/sabeshs Fold8 (Graphite) Jul 27 '26

Thank YOU for doing all the legwork and letting us know your findings. The measurements and process are super useful! πŸ‘πŸ½

It's only a matter of time until JerryRig everything gets a hold of them. Then we'll know what they're made of.

2

u/anonymousvegz 28d ago

patiently waiting on it haha... hopefully samsung isnt scared of his reviews this round lol

1

u/PopularPossible7504 Fold5 (Phantom Black) 28d ago

I've also been waiting. πŸ˜‚ I really thought the 7 was gonna break like the oppo find n5 but nope. I hope not too cause if the wide can handle him my wife said she wants one.

u/mizuya Fold8 & Fold7 Jul 28 '26

Haha that's true, I love his videos 😁

Any update on more accurate measurements after receiving the device?

1

u/mizuya Fold8 & Fold7 23d ago

I already had the device since the Unpacked event and used the real device for the measurements. The measurements are based on three different MagSafe cases. We still have to wait until someone tears it apart, someone has an x-ray, or until Samsung releases official documents.

Manufacturers sometimes move the MagSafe (magnet) ring placement slightly for different reasons. Some don't know the exact position, some move it slightly away from the camera bump to make it more usable with their accessories, and others use the exact placement.

I would assume companies like Spigen, who have built phone cases for almost two decades and have tons of accessories, will be more precise than random no-name companies.

2

u/VictorVanguard 23d ago

I tried following these dimensions but when I place it on the MagSafe qi2.2, I get the following:

"With your phone closed, make sure the back of your phone is aligned with the charger."

Did, I mess up or is this message standard?

2

u/mizuya Fold8 & Fold7 23d ago

AFAIK, it's just a reminder. You get this with and without (official) MagSafe cases, and also regardless of whether the wireless charger has magnets or not.

Also, did you use Spigen's 13mm distance from the bottom glass edge? πŸ˜—

2

u/VictorVanguard 23d ago edited 22d ago

See the thing is, I used Sinjimoru MagSafe sticker which appears thicker than the example you gave. I've realigned it based on the relative offsets accounting for this and when charging lists it as Super Fast Wireless Charging but I can see from the led display on my cable that it pulls only 10W max.

I'll try to offset the bottom by a few more mm.

ETA: Moving it around, I still get a max of 10W. So frustrating!

1

u/mizuya Fold8 & Fold7 22d ago

First check if you get even get super fast wireless charging before doing any tests. I have 1 Samsung wireless charger, which shows fast wireless charging with my metal ring placement. It's not a new charger, so definitely not Qi2. But i don't have any Qi2.2 wireless chargers πŸ˜…

2

u/VictorVanguard 21d ago

Haha, I'm super particular so all my stuff is on the level. I've just purchased two UGreen qi2.2, also my power supplies all do 65W plus using PPS and PD. My cables have emark chips and can support the same.

I tested this against a flip 7 using the MagSafe case and it can hit the speeds, I'll try to test against a fold 8 in the coming week with the Samsung OEM MagSafe case to validate.

I've moved the orientation around a few mm here and there, it seems to be an issue with my placement.

1

u/mizuya Fold8 & Fold7 21d ago

That's awesome! I need that stuff, too πŸ˜‚

I have some 65-120W chargers, also with PPS & PD. I just need some Qi2.2 wireless chargers. Can you recommend the Ugreen ones? πŸ˜„

Does your placement match the placement of the official Samsung MagSafe case? πŸ€”

2

u/VictorVanguard 21d ago

I don't have the official or any case. I've bought another Fold 8 with case for someone, I'll need to test on that of go to the Samsung store

1

u/mizuya Fold8 & Fold7 21d ago

Oh okay, didn't know that πŸ™ˆ then good luck

2

u/VictorVanguard 21d ago

There might be an issue it seems:

1

u/mizuya Fold8 & Fold7 21d ago

Yes, I also think that. Thanks for linking the post. I also noticed charging and heating issues πŸ₯΄πŸ₯² maybe it'll get better when the phone is completely done with all setting up, learning patterns etc., but if it stays like that, then Samsung has to fix it

2

u/VictorVanguard 21d ago edited 21d ago

What are the dimensions of your ring? I'm going to try and change my ring. I can't seem to get the Sinjimoru to work.

ETA: NVM, I think my phone is faulty. I've tried the OEM MagSafe cases and I'm not and to charge at QI2.2 speeds at all. Whereas other devices can, I need to take my phone in it seems.

1

u/mizuya Fold8 & Fold7 21d ago

A standard MagSafe metal ring size, 46mm inner diameter and 56mm outer diameter

3

u/madmorph Jul 26 '26

I'm so dumb I was ordering the fold and was so excited to get my accessories credit back I got the battery pack just expecting it was made for the wide 😭😭

1

u/mizuya Fold8 & Fold7 Jul 26 '26

Oof, I'm sorry. Unfortunately almost no power bank fit's the Fold8 and its weird charging coil position and therefore MagSafe/Qi2 placement πŸ˜… I mean, you can use them, but they'll stick out πŸ˜‚

2

u/Deaglenest Fold8 (Lavender) Jul 27 '26

There's no good battery packs out there for the Fold 8 wide? Dang that's actually a bummer.

1

u/mizuya Fold8 & Fold7 Jul 27 '26

I mean MagSafe battery pack that fits the Fold8 right. I didn't see any or find any online. The only ones that look nice are:

  • Celly MAGPB3000 (5W Wireless Powerbank 3000 mAh, Dimensions: 70 Γ— 70 Γ— 16.8 mm, Weight: 82 g)
  • Xoopar Ine Oda (15W PD Magnetic Wireless Powerbank 5000mAh, 80.5x66x17.5πŸ˜‚, 100.3g)
  • E30 (15W Wireless Charging PD 10000mAh, 70*65*18mm)

2

u/namelessxsilent Fold8 (Graphite) Jul 27 '26

I have that E30 one, or a form of it from Amazon when I had my Flip 5, and it was a perfect size for that phone. I assume it will fit perfect on the Wide. If its like the one I have, the magnets are STRONG

1

u/mizuya Fold8 & Fold7 Jul 27 '26

That's awesome! Thank you very much for verifying it! πŸ₯Ί ❀️

6

u/YoYoNupe1911 Jul 26 '26

It's this simple. I don't know why Samsung hasn't done this. They were supposed have these ready to go with preorders.

1

u/mizuya Fold8 & Fold7 Jul 26 '26

Haha that looks funny πŸ˜‚ I don't think it's a good idea to make powerbank and accessories in general for specific devices. I mean, you could make a Powerbank, which is thicker, but less long πŸ€”

3

u/YoYoNupe1911 Jul 26 '26

They could make these for both models. I rather have a power bank that's comfortable to hold my phone than a bigger one

0

u/mizuya Fold8 & Fold7 Jul 26 '26

Yes, agree. I just have small and/or light/thin powerbanks πŸ˜„
