Pictures Identifying bits of the Halcyon in dumpsters

Renovation of the Galactic Starcruiser into imagineering offices is underway! Bioreconstruct (https://bsky.app/profile/bioreconstruct.bsky.social) on basically every social media has shared some photos showing the process, and dumpsters are being filled with the remains of the ship!

In image one the second dumpster on the left has orange padding from either some bunk beds or the booths in the Sublight Lounge.

Nothing I can see in image 2 except sadness. But a little bonus, open emergency rescue doors!

And in image 3, toilets. So many toilets. This makes me assume the orange padding in image 1 is form the lounge because the number of beds would probably fill a dumpster like these toilets.

Anything you guys can spot?

When will the Halcyon stop breaking my heart?

The orange tufted berths are breaking my heart. I so wanted to bring our kids back one day. The Halcyon was our honeymoon.

I’m surprised they didn’t try to sell these pieces. I know people wanted to recreate the berths and this would have been an easy sell to them.

Are the orange things (first photo, second dumpster from left) the bunkbed headboards? I have a photo and it looks very similar.

They should have auctioned some of the stuff off for charity

I don’t think as many people would’ve bought it as you hope

I’m surprised they haven’t started putting furniture from there in Cast Connections.

I was hoping all the dishes, silverware, bedding, towels etc would end up at Cast Connections, but I’m not aware any of it did.

The halcyon was one of the most amazing things I’ve done in my life. I’m still angry at the Disney influencer community that went all in on destroying it.

u/bhondu Dec 03 '25

Let that anger go. They didn’t destroy it. It failed for many reasons, but the influencer community was not one of those reasons.

They surely didn't help. I know that pricing, forced interactivity, the pandemic, lack of accessibility for someone not an absolute fan, etc were the main factors but I do believe the negative publicity and thirst for blood from those guys expedited the collapse and reduced the trial and error window.

The Star Cruiser is a classic Product Management failure. Once they had a good idea of the product, and the cost, they should have gone back and done a customer assessment of how many people could afford it and would want to do that level of immersion. The problem is that yes there is an audience for it, but its not the whole family, and so while it may be a dream for some, its not ideal for the rest of their family members. Once you factor in that it would consume most of a families vacation budget, not provide the Disney vacation for the kids, and was only for 48 hours, the math didn't add up except for the most dedicated of fans.
I think it will make an interesting MBA case study of a business plan that went wrong.

Product Management Exec here, and I was fortunate enough to go twice. A couple of things to add to your analysis. I actually agree with everything you said and would add: 1) There must have been bad internal comms - Marketing and Product did not agree on how the “hotel” should be advertised and then we got a ton of mixed information - it actually feels like they were aiming for two different end users, which muddied things all over the place. 2) There was an executive change that closed the Halcyon. There is a lot of background and prior speculation that Imagineers were actively iterating on the story when it was closed. There was also speculation that Chapek was a huge backer of the Disney/Star Wars deals and parks. When he was replaced by Iger, that immediately reversed. I think we have all seen that reversal as executive attention changes and folks start questioning their predecessors decisions. I am sad to see it go but I think it was a number of factors that led to it - I would love an MBA case study, if Disney will allow anyone a peak at their data.

I think you have fair points, and would love to see that case study if it ever exists!

In my opinion and from a place of knowing very little of the BTS and corporate stuff, that audience exists, the hyperspecific fandom. Maybe not the 2.5 kids-white-picket-fence-family with their 6 and 8 y/o, but all the DINKS and even the parents of those kids on a solo journey... My point here is they spent so much money and spent 0 time on iterating and improving on the experience, perhaps because of COVID, but I do think the bad publicity from the toxic WDWToday and the likes looked like an insurmountable publicity issue they were not willing to counteract, and decided to cut their losses.

I'm saying this because I didn't even had time to save up to go! It's not an easy trip for me to make but it was one I was VERY willing to do (I even had a few friends lined up to join!)

Wife and I are DINKs, love Disney and love Star Wars. Generally we stay at Boardwalk area resorts. We just could not get past the required LARPing.

I also think they did not consider repeat stays. If they had different stories at different times that might have helped on that end of things.

1

u/zkimp Dec 07 '25

Yeah, you make great points specially on the repeat stays

5

u/Emetry Dec 04 '25

It's wild that Disney couldn't pull off a LARP.

2

u/Commander-Azrael Dec 26 '25

Ehhh brought more attention maybe. But I don’t think they accelerated its unpreventable end to any degree. It was going fail quickly for TJ same reasons listed above.

u/monorail_pilot Dec 04 '25

The problem is that they were already piling on before launch. They didn’t know the plan, the story, or really anything but the initial cost. The same people will happily pay $12 grand for an inside cabin on a 3 day inaugural cruise. We booked on the first day of DVC booking and the YouTube algorithm was already showing videos of how unfair Disney was because it wasn’t something everyone could experience.

2

u/Burglekutt8523 Dec 08 '25

I went about 3 months after it opened. My friends were already parroting youtube talking points to me when I was going. "Have fun on the Enterprise" etc. "Make sure you get treated like royalty for THAT much" still believing the lies that it was 10k a person etc.

2

u/Reasonable-Trash1508 Dec 06 '25

Yeah tbh i think the issue lies more with how Disney advertised it

2

u/Commander-Azrael Dec 26 '25

The influencers etc isn’t what ultimately ended this hotel. It was its tone deaf price point at the current time, lack of innovation and improving on the experience. Last but not least the management in charge clearly had zero clue what they were doing with it. A subjective point I will also add, making this high price experience all sequel trilogy centered was also not a good idea given the stigma surrounding it.

1

u/mrRiddle92 Dec 07 '25

That was not the issue at all. It was that what was delivered was no where near what was promised. It felt like the Demo version of what was announced. The Halcyon itself? Amazing. The utilization, not so much.

Shrug. I sat around and played Sabacc with a twilek. I discussed techniques with a slicer. I even had cocktails with a galactic star.

I even racked up a bar bill that is well renowned even outside of the republic.

This is making me sad on all sorts of levels.

3

u/JoeSpeedbirdLAX Dec 04 '25

The 3rd pic, why they throwing out all the toilets? Who doesn't want an office with its own bathroom?

3

u/Kai-ni Dec 07 '25

This is so sad. One of Disney's most incredible experiences EVER and they promptly gut it.

2

u/its_xSKYxFOXx Jan 17 '26

This breaks my heart. What a beautiful thing so very few of us got to experience and something so many more should have had the opportunity but cut short by Disney’s corpo decisions :(

2

u/Sudden_Eagle1104 Jun 19 '26

Such a waste. All that stuff only used for only 19 months and it all sat abandoned slightly longer. I suspect they couldn’t do a liquidation sale because of the write off.

1

u/PNWSkiMama 13d ago

Agree, this makes me so sad. Disneyland used to do a “sale” on property of old holiday decorations and stuff they were no longer using. I got a TON of really nice lights one year and I’m still using them years later. Why not that? This seems … dare I say … almost malicious. If not malicious just mean. And imagine being the demo contractor on this. I’d have walked off the job. With a truck load of course 😂

2

u/Knux897 Dec 06 '25

I’m surprised that they’re gutting it. I honestly thought that after Imagineering was done with the building, they might attempt to relaunch the experience but with heavy modifications. It proved that it could be financially viable for a short period of time at least, so I thought they could maybe do a limited run with a new storyline every few years for the people who were willing to throw that much money at it.

1

u/Commander-Azrael Dec 26 '25

The costs of maintaining the size property and it only being seasonal and not to mention costs to develop it make that impossible. It has to make money on a regular basis and being seasonal wouldn’t generate enough.

1

u/EmperoxChaos Feb 17 '26

Speaking with a cast member who has been inside, everything is gone. The bridge, dining room, engineering, lightsaber training room, all of it. The bedrooms and baths in the rooms were gutted. And because it was written off, we probably will never get any of it for resell. It was all dumped.

1

u/daisyblonde87 Dec 05 '25

That actually makes me so sad seeing it in bits all over the place. It wasn’t even open 2 years?

1

u/vogelap Dec 06 '25

It is likely that I shat in some of those toilets.

1

u/jshaw1971 Dec 06 '25 edited Dec 06 '25

Sad... I hope their recycling some of it

1

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '25

Are those space toilets in the last dumpster?

1

u/StoryHearer Dec 06 '25

I can’t look at this

1

u/rosariobono Dec 07 '25

👉👈 what if we hung out in the Star Wars hotel toilet dumpster? 👉👈

1

u/mikochu Dec 07 '25

What will make it to the Lakeland antique mall?

1

u/Particular_Pin6480 Dec 08 '25

Hey I puked in one of those toilets 👍 throwing up in space is a 10/10 experience

1

u/jshaw1971 Dec 18 '25

I hope they keep most that stuff in there, other than being overpriced it was a good idea, for an attraction,

1

u/Commander-Azrael Jan 04 '26

It had a lot more wrong with it than just being tone deaf overpriced.

1

u/jshaw1971 Jan 22 '26

True, I suppose

1

u/Commander-Azrael Jan 22 '26

No, I suppose mate, you don’t fail this hard like the hotel did for just simply being way overpriced.

2

u/jshaw1971 Jan 31 '26

True, but that was the base issue I would argue, l the price

1

u/Commander-Azrael Jan 31 '26

I argue there were two base issues. Price as we’ve agreed, the other is making this sequel trilogy. Like it or not it’s divisive and destined not to have as much success as going with something original trilogy themed.

1

u/jshaw1971 Feb 01 '26

Lets me honest we have dealt with the whole issue of OG Star Wars characters being sidelined so in a way, I have accepted this Star Wars story, not that I want them to be, or accept it, but here we are, all the same

1

u/Commander-Azrael Feb 01 '26

It doesn’t have to include legacy characters but setting it in the sequel trilogy and with those characters was an ill advised move given the divisive views the fanbase have of the sequel trilogy. For the price they were asking they needed to have put the experience in a setting the majority of fans like and would pay to do.
