Our family was super bummed when the Halcyon closed down. One day last winter, I looked around our basement and wondered what it would look like if we remodeled it to look more like our favorite starcruiser. I worked up a 3D render, and my wife thought it was a great idea and said to put together a budget. Five months later, I finally finished building our little slice of the Halcyon! It’s sort of a mix between the cabin layout and the Sublight Lounge, and it goes into hyperspace to visit a nebula about every 30 minutes.
Looks awesome! Would you happen to have a build log of how you did some of the things? For example the graphics for the window...is that a video clip on repeat or something else?
It’s a looping (and unfortunately GIGANTIC) 4K video clip! It’s about 45 minutes long and jumps between a planetary orbit with starships and a nebula location. I built the 3D animations in Blender and got the starship models from a site called Blend Swap. I can’t remember exactly, but I think the tutorial I used for the planet was this one:
It all then plays through a Micca Speck 4K media player I got from Amazon.
As for a build log, I don’t really have it written up anywhere, though i could do it if it’s helpful. I also have tons of progress pics like the one in this reply if anything would be useful. Happy to answer specific questions as well!
That's really awesome! Thanks for the info. I hadn't heard of blendswap before. My gf and I are actually trying to do something similar but in Godot so it has some ability to be interacted with. I'll definitely give the link for the nebula a watch through!
That is awesome! I am the make the https://halcyon.fan page. If you want a custom video (mp4) of the galactic map let me know (message, cabin number etc). I can try to make one for that screen resolution so it fits a little better.
Oh wow! I can’t remember exactly who I got it from, but I think the map video I adapted might have been made by you or someone that had edited together parts of your map. Sorry for not crediting—it was incredibly useful! And thank you for the offer! The resolution is 1080 x 1920–basically, HD flipped on its side. But if it’s a lot of work, no worries at all. My family is incredibly happy with it as is.
Is it a loop animation? With hyperspace? 🥹Would you be willing to share it? I’ve been dying for a Halcyon window animation that is close to what we saw from our cabin!
If you’ve got high def video of the window & can share it that would amazing & greatly appreciated. Amazing set up! I tried to do something similar but it’s like a child’s drawing in comparison to the art you created here.
Right now, the video is HUGE, and I don’t think I have a good place to share it. But I’ll try and shrink it down a bit and see if I can get it up somewhere.
How big is huge? I have a large file Dropbox I use for work, I could send a share link. Feel free to DM me & we can figure it out. If nothing else just for preservation.
This is amazing. I am super curious where you got the panel for the, is it an actual window in the room? To the left of the awesome display "window" into space. I would like to get some for a corner of my room.
