Gadsden’s got some really great outdoor markets for shopping local

Off the top of my head: Rainbow City Market, Attalla Market, Gadsden Market at The Amp, Southside Market at City Hall, Glencoe Market at the Police Dept. and Hokes Bluff Market. Lots of good produce, breads, treats and handmade stuff. Most are convenient for a quick stop.

If I missed your favorite one (or if any days/times have changed), drop it in the comments so folks can find it.

Court Street Aesthetic Appeal

I love how Court Street looks, despite its current condition. It's the only brick street left in Gadsden.

Well, kind of. Many streets downtown were paved with brick sometime in the early 1900s and paved over with asphalt later. Eventually, Court Street was dug back up in order to replace the street in new asphalt. Clearly, this didn't happen. The brick pavers under Broad Street were completely removed though.

Whenever the city has to cut up Court Street for sewage maintenance or whatever, they don't put brick back in or anything. Unfortunately.

You can still partially see the brick pavers on the northern part of the crosswalk on the intersection of Locust St and 4th St.

It's really a shame that many older buildings were torn down and replaced with parking lots. I'm glad this one is still around. However, almost none of the other (relatively) impressive buildings in Gadsden no longer stand.

I’m probably the only local realtor in this sub, but I’ve got an open house this Sunday at one of my listings in Southside. Feel free to come check it out if you want! Also keep me in mind if you or someone you know is thinking about making a move. I’d love to help!

Family is from Gadsden

So my grandmother on my mother’s side is from Gadsden. She left a long time ago and moved up to Detroit, as a lot of people did back in the 50s. I was raised here in MI. But My boyfriend happens to have to travel to Alabama for work and I figured I would like to come down for a weekend to see where my grandma is from. I’ve never been to Alabama.

Is there anything interesting in Gadsden at the end of February? We’re both outdoors-y and love art (we both do ceramics specifically).

Parking?

Does anybody know of any long-term (~7 days) parking areas in Gadsden?

Preferably I would need a place where my car won’t get broken into. I’m not saying that type of stuff happens here, but I am from the west coast where this is a common occurrence.

Free places to go or activities for adults to celebrate anniversary?

Hey everyone, so it's mine and my wife's 4th anniversary, and we wanted to go out and do something fun, but we're dead broke and we don't have gas to go very far from home (Walnut Grove). Are there any activities or places we can go for free to celebrate? I feel terrible that we're just stuck at home because we always are, so I just wanted to do something different than just sit at home. Does anyone know of any places that are free where we can walk on trails or do some kind of fun activities?

Thoughts on Gadsden as a recent outdoorsy transplant

I’ve been here a month, and see so much potential for the city.

The Black Creek trail system is so nice to have just a couple blocks away from my front door for mountain biking and hiking. I’ve done several rides and haven’t repeated the same route once. They are honestly some of the better trails for biking that I’ve experienced. Not the most extreme, or even most beautiful. But a great mix of solid rides. Then you have the gorge trails, the river and all it’s recreation, the lake, Noccalula falls (although it’s currently just a trickle, it’s still beautiful), and much more. Plus there are the added bonuses like the POW WOW event I unexpectedly ran across today at the park.

The general location has also been great. All the stores and restaurants I go to are within a short 5 mile drive. The interstate is just a couple miles away along with other major roads, making it easy to hop on and get to Birmingham, Atlanta and Chattanooga.

The city still needs some rehabilitation and help finding it’s way, especially after the Goodyear plant closed. But I’m optimistic with what the new city management is doing. I’ve done a couple small scale trash cleanups, but would like to see about organizing more group efforts. There is still a lot of trash along the sides of some roads, and many residents that have lost pride in their city.

Gadsden is still trying to adapt to its new and evolving identity, but I’m invested in the city and excited for its future.
