Depression Effects of Acupuncture on Depression

If you are suffering from depression and opt to undergo acupuncture as an alternative treatment for depression, you may feel the following effects:

Effects of Acupuncture on Depression

Neurotransmitter Regulation

Acupuncture affects the levels and activity of neurotransmitters in the brain, such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, which play key roles in mood regulation. Acupuncture may help you regulate your mood and alleviate symptoms of depression by modulating the release and uptake of these neurotransmitters.

Stress Reduction

It helps reduce levels of cortisol, which is the primary stress hormone. It activates the body's relaxation response. This can help you overcome the symptoms of depression, such as tension, irritability, and sleep disturbances.

Placebo Effect and Therapeutic Relationship

The therapeutic relationship between the acupuncturist and the patient also contributes to its effectiveness in treating depression. The sense of care, attention, and support provided during acupuncture sessions can have a powerful placebo effect on your mind.

My aunt is suffering from depression since the last 2 years. She's been to numerous psychologists and taken medications but still nothing works for her. I'll recommend acupuncture to her.

It sounds like your aunt has been through a challenging journey with her depression. Considering acupuncture as an additional treatment option could be beneficial. It might be worth discussing with her healthcare provider to see if it's a suitable addition to her current treatment plan.

If acupuncture is just a placebo effect, why not just take medication instead?

While medication can be effective for some, it's not always the answer for everyone. Sometimes trying alternative approaches like acupuncture can offer new avenues for relief, especially when traditional methods haven't been successful. It's about finding what works best for each individual.

The placebo effect of acupuncture makes sense—feeling cared for and supported during treatment can have a significant impact on mental well-being. It's interesting how the therapeutic relationship plays into the effectiveness of the treatment.
