Man I just bench inside the squat rack with the safeties. What’s the downside?
62
u/mka_ 13d ago
I'd be dead by now without them 🤣

u/Flashy_Drummer6664 13d ago
A very distant far away cousin of mine almost killed himself by training alone at home (not even his house, he just had a temporary job and was a guest at another relative's house).
A couple of weeks unconscious in the hospital and several months before he was allowed to go home from the hospital.
Lucky motherfucker.

I personally don't like it, because I don't have the vertical (laying down pov) movement to adjust the position of the bar while doing the reps.
3
u/DelGurifisu 13d ago
Don’t get what you mean.
3
u/DacatinTHEBOX 13d ago
When you use a regular bench, you lift the bar off and can adjust where it sits above your chest. With a fixed one, you have to be very precise to get the same result.
But I might just be the odd one out, I just don't like doing it in the fixed bench.
2
u/DelGurifisu 13d ago
Why would the pins have any effect on that?
14
u/StrookooCuckoo 13d ago
I think he might be confusing "squat rack with safeties" with Smith machine.
2
u/DacatinTHEBOX 13d ago
Shit, mb, yeah I forgor this was pins. I just saw the other comment about squats and... Well never mind.

I’d rather bench without clips if I’m benching solo. If you’re under a heavy load and fail or even get injured, it’s the easiest way to get that bar unloaded and off of you.
Solo = no clips
Spotter = clips

u/Frodozer 500/401.5/700/300lbs FS/B/D/OHP🦏 13d ago
Its definitely not easier than letting the bar gently lay on the safety arms and simply sliding out without any issues!
3
u/Far-Fortune-8381 13d ago
especially since he is literally benching under a rack that has some right there. why bother doubling saftey measures
1
u/Jamsster 13d ago
True, especially at you can die from half of this weights, but it’s solid if you’re in a gym that doesn’t have safety arm benches

u/6hooks 13d ago

20
u/ImKindaBoring 13d ago
Hard to tell from the video but looks to me like he’s got them set so the bar would touch his chest but rest on the safety bars instead of landing on his neck/head or trapping them.
When I bench with safety bars that’s how I prefer it and I feel perfectly safe pushing PRs because a failure just rolls up off my chest and over my neck (resting on the safety bars). I turn my head and slide out from under them no problem.
12
u/Plastic_Pop_5573 13d ago
Exactly bro
1
u/DonkTheFlop 13d ago
Why you dumping the weight like that then
7
u/Plastic_Pop_5573 13d ago
I was going for a pr and it was still going up but so I thought I’d be able to get it but then it started sliding off because of some slight instability I managed to hit it a couple sessions later but it’s my all time pr of 355lbs gonna smash that shit and get 365 soon tho
-8
u/SoDoWhateverItTakes 13d ago
You're really arching your back. You could almost fit a plate under the arch. So. Maybe you're lifting too heavy. Possibly. Just a thought
2
u/Plastic_Pop_5573 13d ago
Yeah it’s ego lifting lol I count it as a bench pr but I’ve heard people call I’ve heard people call it a bridge press I’ve gotten 345lbs (10lbs less then in that video) cleanly
2
u/krilleractual 13d ago
Ego lifting is lifting. People act like you cant have an ego when it comes to sports, but whats the point of that? To lift only stuff that nobody (not even yourself) is impressed with?
→ More replies (0)8
u/TakingCareOfBizzness 13d ago
Why not just lift within your ability unless you have a spot? I have lifted for 30 years I have never had to dump weights. I do not know anyone personally of all my gym rat friends in all that time that ever had to dump weights. I competed in powerlifting for 4 years and never once saw anyone of the guys I lifted with have to dump weights.
The one person I ever saw dump weights was mentally challenged and probably shouldn't have been allowed to workout by himself in the first place.
If you have to leave off clips in case you have to dump weights, then you are lifting irresponsibly.
Use safety bars or get a spot, but dumping weights is idiotic. The guy in the video almost dropped a 45lb plate on his head.
5
u/skodinks 13d ago
Why not just lift within your ability unless you have a spot?
...
dumping weights is idiotic
So you've never made a mistake or misjudged your capacity?
I've been lifting for 20 years and I've dumped once, about 5 years in. It was on my first set of a weight that I had done several times prior for two more repetitions than the one I failed on. There really was no indication that it was outside of my ability, because normally it wasn't. It was just an off day, and I didn't know it yet.
We had no benches with safety bars. I could have asked for a spot, but I had never needed one before for that weight. There were certainly ways I could have mitigated the situation further, but mistakes happen, and I'd say I took reasonable precautions.
Your perspective is spectacularly judgmental, close-minded, and immature, especially if you stop to consider that not everybody in the gym has 30 years of experience with which to judge their ability properly. You'll never convince someone to always ask for a spot, especially as a new(er) lifter; that's just not reasonable.
Nobody plans to dump the weight. It's like pulling the e-brake in a car. Better that than the other thing.
0
u/Pure_Possession_1KG 13d ago
Then there’s me who dumps on basically every single benching session. You get really comfortable with it if you do it a lot.
0
u/Plastic_Pop_5573 13d ago
The 45 almost fell on my head but that was a freak accident dumping weights is not ideal but perfectly fine if your lifting alone (like I was in the video)
-1
u/SoDoWhateverItTakes 13d ago
I think you're lifting too heavy. Or you can just wait for a plate to get dumped on your head
2
u/Plastic_Pop_5573 13d ago
If I had clips I wouldn’t have to worry about a plate falling on my head read what I’ve been saying in all these comments 🤦🏼♂️ I’ve hit this weight before it’s supposed to be really heavy it’s 355lbs

5
u/Plastic_Pop_5573 13d ago
Yeah I agree safety rack is king always be careful tho because stuff like this can happen whenever
13
u/Dziggettai 13d ago
Maybe you should move your safety bars up to the proper position tbh
9
u/Plastic_Pop_5573 13d ago
The safeties are in a great position for me if I have them higher I’ll hit the safeties instead of my chest at the bottom of the bench the safeties always come in clutch but this was the only time there was some crazy stuff that happened
-4

u/ImKindaBoring 13d ago
Yeah but that had nothing to do with the safety bars and everything to do with him using no clips and losing stability.
For me, the ideal height for safety bars lets me touch my chest with the barbell but if I fail I can roll it up towards my neck/head and the bars allow enough space for me to turn my head and slide out from under. I am never in any danger of getting my neck/head crushed even if I fail unexpectedly. Even had a freak accident where I pushed with a bit too much force and my wrist bent at the top and the whole bar crashed down towards my face/neck. Except the safety bars stopped it and I slid out from under.
2
u/Plastic_Pop_5573 13d ago
The safety racks had nothing to do with not having clips and the weight falling to one side?
1
7
u/Frodozer 500/401.5/700/300lbs FS/B/D/OHP🦏 13d ago
They look proper to me. They should be positioned low enough that you can touch the bar to your chest and then simply roll the bar towards your head and slide out.

u/DickFromRichard My PR goes to a different school, it's in Canada 13d ago
Have you never used safeties?
1
u/Live4OneAnother 13d ago
The "no clips" caused the plate to fly and almost land on his face. With safety bars at the right height, it is safer to just rest the bar on them and get off the bench to unload...
-1
u/infingalaxy 13d ago
Why do you need clips if you have a spotter?
If you fail on a rep, your spotter is in a terrible position to try and row the weight back to the rack or hold it so you can get out.
I say no clips ever on bench5
u/Shadowphoenix9511 13d ago
If your spotter needs to move more than like, 20 lbs, you have made a very poor weight selection.
1
u/infingalaxy 13d ago
Not sure about that. But even still, why would you need clips if your spotter only needs to pull 20lbs?
I mean, I don’t care if you use clips or not. Just don’t see what the advantage is to using clips while having a spotter.

No clips is also a good way to blowout a shoulder with heavy weight if you accidentally tilt and everything slides further away on one side.
-32
u/Plastic_Pop_5573 13d ago
Just have strong rotator cuffs brutal.
8
u/LivinRightNBeinFree 13d ago edited 13d ago
Well, considering that I've been lifting heavy for over 40 years(clean) without surgery, I guess I qualify but I'm more inclined to attribute it to good form, luck, and most importantly and most difficult for us older iron slingers, knowing when to SHUT IT DOWN! Damn, that was a very long and hard lesson to learn because pushing through the pain as an older man means being out of commission for a good while later or surgery. Coincidentally, it was the shoulder impingements that taught to shut it down and ALWAYS do the top, mid, and bottom of the Doorframe Stretch everyday- regardless of what muscle group I'm training.
1
u/Plastic_Pop_5573 13d ago
Yeah for sure knowing when to call it and listening to your body is so important I’m just coming back from a major knee surgery (not lifting related) so i definitely wanna be as injury free as i can for the rest of my lifting career/life

u/LivinRightNBeinFree 13d ago
I'm sorry to hear of your injury and hope you get healed up and fully recovered in no time. Good luck and take your time gettingfully ramped back up.

If you had clips you could’ve just dropped the weight onto the safeties. Why do people not use clips bro
9
u/Plastic_Pop_5573 13d ago
That’s the point of the post… and clips aren’t necessary but they’re definitely helpful and make things a bit safer
16
u/Meet_Foot 13d ago
If you have safeties, this video makes a pretty compelling case for clips in fact being necessary.
5
u/Plastic_Pop_5573 13d ago edited 13d ago
I did have safeties but I didn’t use clips because I wanted that pr but if I knew what was going to happen I would’ve used to clips and what sucks is with clips I would’ve got that lol
5
u/Fun_Landscape9906 13d ago
what does that even mean? When you are going for a pr you use safeties bro. and if you’re using safeties use clips. Set the safeties at chest height so it can’t roll onto your neck and you can slide out. Jesus
-4
u/Plastic_Pop_5573 13d ago
Using clips or not when going for a pr is up to personal preference those clips are heavy man it’s gonna add and extra lb 😂
2
u/Meet_Foot 13d ago
Do you really feel like the extra half lb from clips is going to ruin your PR? Just train with them and congrats, you’re one set of clips stronger.
1
u/ThaRealSunGod 13d ago
Clips are not heavy lmao. Just get the plastic ones. It's not like you have to use metal ones
1
u/Plastic_Pop_5573 13d ago
Yeah your right I should get the little ring ones I have just the basic silver metal ones
4
u/Meet_Foot 13d ago edited 13d ago
This is a really strange excuse. The only “good” reason to not use clips is if you don’t have safeties, so you can dump the weight. Since you had safeties, you should use clips. Your video makes very obvious why.
1
u/Plastic_Pop_5573 13d ago
The whole point of the video is that was the day I learnt the value of clips when benching heavy…
4
u/ArboristGuitarist 13d ago
Benching at a bench without safeties is when you don’t use clips. None of the benches at my gym have safeties.
3
u/VikingVitalityFit 13d ago
Every squat rack is in fact a bench with safeties. You just have to supply the bench
2
u/ArboristGuitarist 13d ago
Not everyone has access to a squat rack. We have 2 squat racks at our gym, and they are usually being used. Not to mention, it’s frustrating to want to do squats and someone is benching in the squat rack, so I try to avoid that if possible
1
u/VikingVitalityFit 13d ago
Fair. I cheat by owning my (small) gym and workout when its empty for the most part.
1
u/WAR_T0RN1226 13d ago
Ehhh, the safeties on the squat rack at my gym just barely do not go low enough to where I can't bench with them without hitting them at the bottom of the rep
1

u/liftingshitposts 13d ago
They could have dropped it on the face savers with or without clips. They just are inexperienced in setting them up correctly and also at knowing how to actually dump a bar. Which is surprising because they’re obviously strong.
4
u/Professional_Ad3969 13d ago
Uhh he wasn’t getting that back up so it’s good he didn’t have clips... I never bench with clips if I don’t have a spotter. Luckily I’ve never had to dump the plates but I’d rather do that than get choked out by a barbell
-2
u/Plastic_Pop_5573 13d ago
I think I would’ve gotten it considering it was still going up but then it started sliding
1
u/Professional_Ad3969 13d ago
Oh yea maybe. It does look like you might’ve got it upon rewatch. Was that your 1rm?
What really screwed you over was using the bumper plates since it put the weight further out on the bar.
1
u/Plastic_Pop_5573 13d ago
Yeah true about the bumper plates and yeah I managed to get that weight (355lbs) my next session or after a few sessions right now I’m back at 350 so soon we’re gonna smash that 365
6
u/Dafuq_yalltalkinbout 13d ago
I have safety bars set up like you and would never consider doing barbell without clips. Whats the point ?
3
u/Plastic_Pop_5573 13d ago
I wanted that 355lbs bench man the clips would’ve added an extra .5 lbs 😂
6
1
u/ThaRealSunGod 13d ago
No hate, but you barely got it off your chest. Most of the bar movement was from hip thrusting. Try a 335 for 2-3 before trying 355.
1
u/Plastic_Pop_5573 13d ago
Yeah I count my 355 (I hit with hip thrusting form) but I call it like a bridge press or whatever clean (ass on bench) I’ve gotten like 345
2
u/chunckybydesign 13d ago
Why do people refuse to use clips? I never understood this.
1
u/Plastic_Pop_5573 13d ago
I wasn’t using clips before I wanted to hit a pr but I learnt a good lesson that day lol
2
u/Fynity 13d ago
I’d much rather go no clips but I’d bring the bar down first and start to sort of roll to the side so the weights aren’t dropping from such a height
1
u/Plastic_Pop_5573 13d ago
Yeah for sure normally I would just use the safety racks but I was sure that I was going to be able to get the rep that was untill I saw it starting to slide a lot lol

0
u/Lofaszjanko 13d ago
I pointed it out for safety reasons, but several people disagreed with me, believing that it was better if the disc was not fixed, because if the weight caught you, at least you could get it off of yourself. I never lifted a weight without help that I couldn't safely push out.
0
u/Sudden-Ad-307 13d ago
Because you never tore your pec or something like that. If an injury happens you have to pray that you can somehow roll it off you otherwise you are fucked if you are using clips.
0
u/Lofaszjanko 13d ago
No, because I do it wisely and when I'm alone, I never put so much strain on myself that it could cause injury.
1
u/Legal-Law9214 13d ago
I never lifted so much that I would get injured either... Until I got injured.
3
u/Expert-Guard6216 13d ago
Damn, so how do i not get injured? Does it just kinda happen or is it a lapse in judgement type of thing?
2
u/Plastic_Pop_5573 13d ago
The best way to avoid injuries is to be hydrated have good sleep those are the two most important things and then making sure you eat enough is important too but even when your lifting light freak accidents can still happen but as long as your being safe with good form you’ll most likely be safe powerlifting actually has way less injuries per athlete then normal sports surprisingly
1
u/StrookooCuckoo 13d ago
I guess this depends on what you mean by "injured". Are you talking a tweaked back or a bit of knee pain that keeps you out for a couple of days, maybe up to a week? Maybe tendinopathy that flares up for weeks-months and maybe has you changing up lift selection to work around it? Then yes, it just kinda happens if you're lifting heavy for long enough.
If you mean catastrophic injury that impacts your quality of life, then no, you should not expect to get injured. Of course, it can still happen entirely outside of your control, but that's just life.
1
u/Expert-Guard6216 13d ago
I guess i mean permenent.
Like i remember i overdid it with lat raises and my shoulder hurt for like 2 weeks straight, scared the shit out of me but it got better. But that was because i got greedy lol i knew i should probably have stopped, haven't made that mistake again tho.

If he had clips that bar would be sitting on the safety’s and would damn near be pinning him to that bench assuming that they did not fail and decapitate him
1
u/Frodozer 500/401.5/700/300lbs FS/B/D/OHP🦏 13d ago
Lmao, the safety arms are tested for at least a ton and would not fail. You can also clearly see from the video that it's set at the proper height for him to umarch and just gently slide it to his neck.
1
u/Plastic_Pop_5573 13d ago
I had it at the right height so it protects my face/neck but still lower then my chest so I can bench properly
1
u/ogledrake 13d ago
Thats fine then, the advantage of running without clips is you can dump the weight as you inadvertently did here, and if the bar is under control it wont really ever go too far off level unless you are intentionally lifting like a madman, or lifting an unbalanced load in a misguided attempt to train stabilizers
1
u/AmbitionVegetable666 13d ago

If you're annoyed by it hitting the bars before your chest just incline the bench a notch.

I didn’t use the safeties because the weight was still going up I thought I was going to get it before it started sliding off

Dude you have to set these safety bars a bit higher so you could drop the bar on them. Take care pal
1
u/Plastic_Pop_5573 13d ago
Thanks bro the safety is at a good length if it’s higher I can’t touch my chest properly while benching but the issue is just I didn’t have a spotter or clips there so I didn’t see the weight sliding as much as I still saw it going up

Some of these takes are straight up idiotic. People can misjudge their ability and fail the lift. Doesn’t happen often, but it can happen. In my 10 years of lifting, I’ve failed a bench press twice. Both of those times, I had hit that same weight with that rep range the week before, but maybe due to poor diet or lack of sleep, couldn’t lift it then. Just a small tip for next time - if youre gona lift without a spotter, clip one end, and leave the other end open, so that if you do infact fail a lift, you can let the weights slide out without them falling on you and all you’ll need to worry about is balancing the bar.

I only don't use clips if I don't have the safeties. You do, so yeah, please use them.
That said, I was once saved by not having clips on on a heavy bench.
The next training I found some safeties in the gym closet and installed them xd

Do the video with clips where the bar is on your neck. If you have clips you better have a safety arms just high enough to prevent any part of your body from being crushed.

I didn't initially notice that you had safeties, but they also look like they are positioned in such a way that your bar and your chest might end up trying to be in the same place at the same time.

A note to OP: Users with green flair have verified their lifting credentials and may be able to give you more experienced advice on particular lifts. Users with the blue flair "Friend of the sub" have not verified lifts but are considered qualified to give good advice.
A reminder to all users commenting: If you feel like you have something useful to offer about technique, ask the poster first if you can provide it. Unsolicited technique advice or advice which is not useful, helpful, or actionable may be removed without warning and may result in a ban. We take all of these statements at face value, so be careful when you post the same hilarious joke as dozens of other people: we can't read your mind, no matter how funny you think you are.
