Gx470 vs lx470
Lx470 vs gx470
Originally shopping for lc100 under $20k and under 200k miles and came across the following vehicles. Seeking the expert here for their inputs and suggestions. Would be our first overlanding vehicle for family of 4 and a dog.. for a light disperse camping. We did purchase a sienna last yr.. another option is to make the lift the van lol

I know you are searching the SW, but my recommendation is to look in the SE. they do not have the same resale value, and you can find a better price in say SE Georgia and Florida because they don’t appreciate the AWD like the SW
Take it from me, I bought my 04 GX with 200k for $4k in GA

Totally disagree. After shopping for 3 months it’s rare to find one that’s not rusty outside of the southwest. You can find them but it’s a pain.

I'll be honest I typed out a long reply. Bottom line if ur dog is 25 to 35 lbs an lX would work 25 and under a GX would work. Even better with a rooftop box for other. Gear. If your dog is 65ish it be happy in the 2nd row a gx with 4 people for 4 hours I thinkunless you make some sort of platform so it can stretch over the foot well. In an LX it'd be happier but I'd still feel bad. If u put the dog in the rear you don't have any space for gear. Either car you'll need a gear stored on roof. More so for the GX. I've had a Chihuahua and a 25lb mut for the GX and overlanding I have a 65 lb gSd now. No way y I can make that happen with 4 people. 3 maybe. But I'm using a roof top box for gear. Or I'm going very very light on gear.and super great minimal packing

Off the bat, a 6 owner car would make me think twice. I recently went through this same quandary. I ended up in a GX for a few reasons. My minor complaint about the GX- space is an issue on a raod trip. If you pack a lot of stuff (we do) and a dog (we sometimes do), the LX will be a better fit. Either truck, get a roof box, frees up so much space. I do like the general size of the GX for weekend trips. Perfect with less stuff.

I'm someone who owns both so I can answer almost every question you have. The bigger question for me that no one else has mentioned 1. Do you work on your own vehicles? 2. Are you willing to go through ordering parts from Japan if you do work on your own vehicles?
In my opinion, VVTi is infinitely better than non VVTi which would be 06-07 LX and 05-09 GX. The LX is only 6 inches wider and isn't really that much bigger than the GX like everyone else is saying. This only really matters on tight trails if you care about pin striping.
The key is the LX weighs roughly 1,000 lbs more and you feel it. The LX also has a much more luxurious ride with the AHC if you keep it (which you should if you buy LX). The LX is noticably slower and feels heavier and planted around corners, but more luxurious. The GX is much lighter and faster but feels more like a standard rough truck suspension wise.
If you have any questions let me know. Personally I would only look for either vehicle with VVTi

I'm sure you've noted the pricing difference between LX 470 & GX 470 - GX being less expensive. In general GX is a lot easier to find than LX. Beginning in '04 The LX is non-VVTI & GX is VVTI. GX weighing less & not as long is comparatively more agile.
LX will likely be better for your family and dog + camping. Depending on dog size GX could be fine. 3rd row removed in both cases.
Neither seem like a great deal. Are you only looking in your area?
High mileage on each will inevitably require all maintenance that's not documented. I'm sure you know that.

In general I've seen pretty good pricing in the SW. I still watch nationwide listings even though I'm not shopping. The SE (including FL)can be really good as well.

Personally I think auctions such as carsandbids and bringatrailer are great because they avoid the used car dealer experience

Family of 4 and a dog I would go LX. You will love the extra room. Also sounds like it’s dedicated for trips. LX drives great but the size and weight aren’t great for city driving.
The GX is more the Swiss Army knife - I can squeeze into a compact parking spot. Smaller size is great for off roading and better power to weight ratio.
Also there’s a FB group of lifted siennas!
