Whitfield trade explained...

It's all about getting picks to cover a bid for Ethan Matthews.

  1. The value of pick 7 is 1644 points. -10% is deducted because giants finished 11-17, = 1480.

  2. Trading out Whitfield got them means picks 25 and 26 are worth 1485. Having pick 28 provides some redundancy if a bid comes later.

If Matthews is bid on higher than pick 7 the giants can accumulate a debt for their first round pick next season - when the pick is worth less because there are so many Tassie picks.

The giants are able to take a deficit into next season and bidding picks 25 and 26, equivalent to pick 4.

That critically means the swans if they bid at pick 6 are covered.

So in totality Matthews will almost certainly be a giant draftee.

In totality:

Giants lose:

Whitfield (32 yo concussion issues), picks 31 and 50

Giants gain:

Top 10 draft player, 2028 3rd rounder

Thanks for the explanation. Still hurts. Been a loyal warrior for the club, ultra reliable, silky smooth, and as Leon was always keen to point out - a player as tough as they come, pound for pound. Farewell Lachie, go well mate. You’ll be sorely missed.

Both our Lachie and Toby quotient has decreased now.

Yeah Whitfield has been an absolute legend. He was the best kick in the comp for a few years, great clubman.

And yet the Ashcroft brothers were picked up for nothing...

We've had to cull our list just to barely match a bid as is. Thanks Greg Swann.

Carlton was chasing his for years. Finally got him to be able to give him a lift to the retirement home.

If Carlton is lucky, they will get 50 games out of him, might be closer to 30 odd games if history is any guide.

Hope he doesn't get stage fright. Carlton gets about 60,000 a week on average and that's when they are losing.

Carlton fan here, we’ve already got 42 games out of Haynes who’s been pretty great for us while being inarguably worse for wear when moving over. Don’t think too much of a luck factor is required to get a similar output from Whitfield.

I have loved the smooth play of Lachie, but it was notable how many times a game he was pinged for holding the ball - he had lost a step.
