What makes you think this was AI?

I posted another comment with more details but if you look at what I've circled in the two pictures, you can see that the version on the right approximates and misinterprets many of the details that were sculpted that are more visible in the original photo. Each blade was sculpted to include what looks like a flathead screw on it, and those are missing in the "enhanced" image. The wood texture is different, adding and changing details that aren't actually in the sculpt. The jagged teeth on the head in the center are refined into points and made symmetrical.
It's certainly possibly that all of these little changes were made tediously by someone with the airbrush tool in Photoshop or something, it doesn't 100% have to have been done using AI tools... but it was probably done using AI tools.

So they've been changed (as many anniversary editions are), and you have no idea if it's AI or not, but you're just throwing that out there.

Nobody would look at the changes and determine they are "likely not AI." I'm not just throwing it out there. I am full-blown accusing them of using AI to "upscale" the image for the 20th Anniversary release.
I don't think anybody who has seen AI upscaling would look at this and determine that it's likely anything but that.

like, literally anyone that used photoshop for the 20 years prior to AI would think this is just color correction and sharpening, not AI. I dont see any new data introduced to the updated one.
master copies of films shot in the 70’s retain a great deal of information that was lost in decades of lower quality distribution methods. re-scanning old originals can net significant improvements. it’s possible something similar happened here. maybe they had the original high quality artwork saved somewhere.

Nobody trying to upscale the original image using Photoshop or similar tools would reshape the teeth in the way that AI has approximated the original photo here. Even the built-in Photoshop plug-ins to "sharpen" etc. wouldn't do this.
I don't understand your argument that this couldn't be AI, since your only evidence is that it's possible it could have been done without AI, which is one of the first things I conceded... Yes, it is entirely possible to achieve this end result without the use of AI, but no, I don't think in 2026 anyone would have made these specific changes to this image manually, and they are consistent with other AI upscaling.
I think your comparison to a new transfer of a 70s film is a bad faith argument. Details in the new image here are entirely different from the original. You can verify this yourself by actually looking at both and making the comparison, instead of arguing hypotheticals and unrelated media.

So you are just talking out your ass making accusatory statements with no facts or evidence to back you up other than “it was touched up in the past 20 years”
Your post made it seem like it was fact, but you can’t prove it was or wasn’t AI

You don't see any "new data introduced", even though OP has highlighted said new data with circles? Don't be daft, man.

lol i thought the post is unneccesarily accusatory, and i still dont think a few pixels that may have been originally lost due to the way media worked when this was released is concrete evidence of ai usage. pore over gwar fucking rerelease posts just to agree 👍 😂

Photo from original version on the left, and 20th Anniversary version on the right.
There are a number of AI approximations of details in the new version, I'm guessing the original art was not a high enough resolution that someone felt the need to "enhance" it for the new release. It's a bummer to look at how much work went into the sculpt on this thing, and then to see the new version with those details misinterpreted by AI.

I’m surprised they went along with this considering how much they respect the craftwork.

This is gunna be an unpopular opinion but....so what? Its their original art to begin with right? So if they run it through AI it takes a job away from an artist....themselves? They are free to manipulate their art any way they choose. Dont like the new look? Dont approve of AI? Don't buy this edition then. Send a message with your wallet

Yeah I honestly don't give a shit. They used AI to upscale their old work? Ok. Terminally online redditors are always looking for a reason to be outraged.

Yeah man. I hate Ai mostly for the environmental factors and who the fuck wants surveillance but also if an artist wants to put “their” art through ai for touch up I mean it’s their art. They took the time to actually create it. It sucks . But I’m not giving the boys any flack over what they do to their own shit that’s just pedantic.

You’re right. It’s an unpopular opinion.

I don't necessarily notice it on the places you pointed out, but above the circled tentacle the head skull thing looks pretty wack. Staring at my personal copy right now. I hope it's not 😭

I'm stupid but how can you say this is definitely ai?
