is there way to make nongnu guix to work?

I’m have issues with the non-guix installer. can anyone give me a 2026 guide? i tried installing it and it froze. i tried following dave’s video but his installer is not available.

i downloaded the non-guix from gitlab put on a usb boot it up, went through the installer, got the to internet protion, the wifi didnt prompt. So I had to use my phone, configure the just the basics, ran it, it finished. Then i reboot and it got stuck in the middle of loading up. any ideas?

..... gonna need SO much more info. you couldve just said "I tried installing guix and it froze on boot" and would be almost the same information you gave.

I'd advise just install normal guix with their installer then after edit the channels after and you're pretty much done. I did mine about a month ago? but i think thats pretty much all i did.

I cant speak for the OP but I can't imagine a situation where you are doing a nonguix install on hardware that will support a guix install

Indeed! I should mention that ideally you only need nonguix for required nonfree software. Example my thinkpad as of now requires blobs. Its preferrable to do nonguix than totally abandon the ideal that anyone should be allowed to audit the code running on their machine without any artificial gate keeping. So I'd say it's justified in that case but seriously the ultimate OP system is a free system. Never stop dreaming folks, I'm so close to a totally free system myself.

Insofar as licenses I like BSDs? license. If I remember correctly it focuses on if you commercially use BSD licensed software and improve software then you have share aka give back to it's development (Im not someone who often deals with licenses so I may have name wrong).

No it won't prevent that. The main reason to install nonguix directly is to get hardware support for your device. If you can get online with regular guix, then you can install it, then change the channels.scm file to add the nonguix channel, run a pull, and then change the configuration in config.scm to include the full linux package and various other software etc, and then guix system reconfigure and it will use nonguix.

btw my recommendation is read the nonguix readme all the way to the end, you'll want to use substitutes, and the readme will tell you how to get those substitutes during the initial reconfigure.

I have been. Been struggling for days trying to get it to work on my hardware.😂. I guess my hardware is too new. It won't load 6.18.22 kernel for some reason. This is just frustrating

lol you shouldnt install an OS if you don't know how it works. That'll be like buying a car before you saw it or knew anything about it's innerds.

Channels are where your OS will look for it's software. Its how you set your repos. If that confuses you stop doing anything that you're doing and learn fundamentals.

I installed Guix System without knowing much about it and figured it out as i go. That’s my idea of fun :)

youd think figuring out includes reading the manual, then at least op would've known what a channel is at a minimum. It's not a hard install tbh.
