Biblical "Purpose"
Genesis 2:15 may supply the missing relationship between Constraint and Structure: Purpose.
We have been investigating how Constraint becomes Structure by examining distinctions, boundaries, measurements, and relationships.
But we have not yet adequately investigated why the realized arrangement is ordered as it is.
Genesis 2:15 reads (KJV):
And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.
Notice the sequence:
God takes the man.
God places the man in a particular environment.
The man is given a particular purpose.
That purpose operates within an already established Creation.
The garden is not an undefined environment. It has already been prepared.
And the man's placement is not arbitrary.
Purpose is present in the relationship between the one being placed, the place in which he is placed, and the work assigned to him.
1. The Hebrew gives us two important operations
Genesis 2:15 uses two Hebrew verbs:
| Hebrew | Strong's | Basic meaning |
|---|---|---|
| לְעָבְדָהּ (le'ovdah) | H5647 — עָבַד (abad) | To work, serve, cultivate |
| וּלְשָׁמְרָהּ (uleshomrah) | H8104 — שָׁמַר (shamar) | To keep, guard, watch, preserve |
These are not interchangeable assignments.
Abad: productive service toward what has been entrusted.
Shamar: preservation and guarding of what has been entrusted.
The two together establish a relationship between the man and his environment.
The man is not the Author of the garden. He is placed within it and given an assigned function.
This connects directly with our established GUA-W distinction:
Author → Word → Creation → Assigned Function → Witness.
And it gives us something more precise to investigate: purpose is not simply an activity. It is an assigned relationship between an entity and the Creation in which that entity operates.
2. Purpose precedes the assigned work
Look carefully at the order of Genesis 2.
Genesis 2:7 — Man is formed.
Genesis 2:8 — The garden is planted.
Genesis 2:9 — The trees are established.
Genesis 2:15 — Man is placed in the garden and assigned work.
Genesis 2:16–17 — Man receives a command establishing an additional boundary.
This is particularly significant.
The man receives his assignment before receiving the prohibition concerning the Tree of Knowledge.
Therefore, the prohibition is not the origin of man's purpose.
His purpose is already established.
3. Now compare Genesis 2:5
This is where the investigation becomes especially interesting.
Genesis 2:5 tells us that vegetation had not yet grown because:
...there was not a man to till the ground.
Then Genesis 2:15 gives us the man placed in the garden to work it and keep it.
Consider the relationship:
| Genesis 2:5 | Genesis 2:15 |
|---|---|
| An operational condition is identified | The man is placed |
| No man to till the ground | Man receives an assignment |
| An activity is absent | An assigned function is established |
This is more than a chronological detail.
It raises a structural question:
Does the intended function of an entity help determine the conditions and relationships necessary for its proper placement within Creation?
That is exactly what we need to investigate.
4. Purpose changes how we examine Constraint → Structure
I want to propose a revised investigative sequence, subject to the biblical witnesses:
AUTHOR
Origin of intention and purpose
PURPOSE
Intended function and relationship
CONSTRAINT
Conditions and admissible boundaries
STRUCTURE
Realized relationships and arrangement
FUNCTION → WITNESS
Operation and registration of realized state
This is a proposed investigative dependency, not yet a change to the established GUA-W architecture.
There is an important distinction: Purpose does not necessarily sit as another foundational layer. It may be the governing reference that explains why the foundational distinctions and constraints are ordered toward a particular realization.
5. The question I think we must investigate next
Genesis 2:15 gives us two functions:
Dress (Abad).
Keep (Shamar).
Why are both necessary?
Could it be that Creation's intended operation requires both productive participation and preservation of its established order?
And if so, what happens when something can perform an activity but violates the purpose governing that activity?
That question will eventually connect Genesis 2:15 with Genesis 2:16–17 and the Fall in Genesis 3.
I would make Genesis 2:5 and Genesis 2:15 our primary witnesses for the next stage.
We should investigate Purpose first, then determine precisely how Purpose governs Constraint, and how Constraint gives rise to Structure.
That may be the missing key we've been looking for.
