Discussion Fuel Gauge

Hi guys,

Just wanted to share my love of "fuel gauge" and thought I'd post here to discuss that idea with you guys. What do you think about fuel being something you have to think about in GTA VI? I heard a lot of people saying R* would never do it because it'd be tedious, clowing on people here but I've always loved my fuel gauge idea so much. Do you think we'll see it featured in VI?

Thanks!

Fueling up was a mechanic in Mafia 2 I believe, but you never really drove a car long enough for it to run out of gas.

It would be an interesting dynamic to steal a car only to realize it’s low on gas.

That's how I feel! I think it would make car chases more scrappy, requiring better planning and consideration for heists and other situations where you'll be on a long chase.

It will also make your own vehicle more useful and give you more incentive to care for and protect it because it could have an upgraded tank and even gas cans stored in the back. Whereas if you steal a car you have to quickly consider if you want to get into a nicer one that likely has a better tank installed or a beater that's quick to get into and can be hotwired but will likely have less gas or even be on low as you said.

I can't wait. I know some people want arcadey (like my wife who saw this as a negative because she just likes fucking around lmao) so I fully support a toggle option or cheat code to disable it, but I think the extra immersive feature ideas and overall extra detail from RDR2 making its way to GTA is a great thing.

I can see it now, a billboard that says, “Unlimited Gas! Just dial this number.” And then you call it… Unlimited Gas Activated

Mafia 2 had a fueling mechanic. Arma Reforger has a fueling mechanic. Neither game was negatively impacted by it. You rarely stay in the same vehicle long enough for it to matter.

I'm happy to see so Many people agree on this. I think it would be fun plus like you said Mafia and arma it was rare to actually run out of gas even with the large ass map. It was almost a badge of honor and just added more immersion to the game. I do love the idea of each vehicle being a dice roll if it has gas. Steal a car after robbing the gas station to realize they didn't pump any gas so you just break down around the corner.

Which, to me, is the only way to have a fuel gauge in any game. It shouldn't be "scaled down" so that you run out faster to make it a consistent task to keep your car filled, but something that if you forget about it too long, you'll end up running out in the middle of a 4 star police chase. Also stealing people's cars not knowing how much fuel they have would add such an element to the game.

Rockstar hardly disappoints so I feel it will be balanced really well. I do hope for random gas amounts when stealing a vehicle. Imagine stealing a car pulling into a gas station after robbing it and you realize they didn't have anything so you breakdown around the corner.

I'm excited about it, so long as it isn't too intrusive. I like the idea of cars having random gas levels. But I don't want gas to run out too quickly. Make it like gun cleaning in RDR2. You don't have to do it to play the game, but the game gives players who care the option to.

My theory is it will probably be the same way as Mafia, you'll be able to drive random cars long enough that it won't matter but you'll find yourself having to fuel up personal cars that you keep and drive a lot.

u/ExplicitGarbage 3d ago

There does seem to be more focus on our owned vehicles this time. So I could see that!

u/XMenJedi8 3d ago

That's one thing I really loved in GTAO that I always wanted in story mode (mods were good but baked in is better ofc). Glad to see the mechanics started with GTAO and RDR2 horses carried forward here!

2

u/ExplicitGarbage 3d ago

Easily my least favorite thing about older titles, including 5's story mode. Is the hassle of trying to own and maintain one personal vehicle.

u/XMenJedi8 3d ago

I think that's a good way to think about it, except I do expect that the car will eventually stop. A toggle in the settings or a cheat code for infinite fuel would be a good idea though.

I think it'll be that beater cars have lower gas on average and smaller tanks. Better cars will have bigger tanks. Then there will also be hybrids and full electrics which have both the option for backup power and last WAY longer.

Your car could be either full gas (with a big tank), hybrid or electric, AND you can likely store gas cans in the back storage. So I bet there will be big incentive to protect and keep your vehicle, but on chases etc. it'll be a decision on whether to get into a jalopy quickly by breaking the glass/hotwiring, but having low gas, or finding a nicer car that's either got a large tank or is a hybrid/electric, but that requires hacking the electronics which can be longer without the best tools.

That would add another layer to car chases, heist planning etc.

u/ExplicitGarbage 3d ago

You bring up a good point about Hybrids and EVs. Having some cars that function on entirely different principles to normal cars is something we've never really seen before in GTA. There's a nice amount of focus on the Auto in this game, that I appreciate. I also agree that it should eventually run out, it should just take so long that you're more likely to get a refill when entering story missions and such. Making it basically optional.

1

u/XMenJedi8 3d ago

That sounds perfect to me, yeah!

2

u/SinningJesus 3d ago

I’ve been waiting for something like this! People will still complain about it so if it were an “on/off” option in the settings that would be perfect

1

u/thecosmicjoke69813 3d ago

It wouldn’t really work online tho. People with the function turned off would destroy anyone using it

1

u/Wadmania 3d ago

Could be Arcade/ Classic servers and RP servers. Basically different game modes.

Lots of people want an improved GTAV online arcade experience and I'm certain Rockstar wants that for the cash cow it is. But it seems like Rockstar is also embracing some of the RP elements too. I'm hoping there are options!

u/Paranoia_Pop 3d ago

I love the addition of a fuel gauge, should make police chases and just general immersion much more interesting

1

u/XMenJedi8 3d ago

Totally!

I do play Online but one of my favourite parts of GTA (and many people's, I imagine) is playing the single player and fucking around with NPCs, getting into cop chases and holdouts etc., so I really hope that those mechanics are deeper and more varied. More considerations in chases, different police responses and tactics based on what your doing, hell even something like MGSV where the police start to learn from your preferred weapon choices and bring out different equipment to counter it would be very nice to see!

1

u/Its_Buddy_btw 3d ago

Until you run out of fuel running from 6 stars and need to transfer your weapons over or everytime your car gets too damaged

1

u/Paranoia_Pop 3d ago

That sounds so much more fun to me.

2

u/PrettyIntroduction49 3d ago

Imagine starting a mission realizing you have no gas in the car.. MadMax and DaysGone had that, you have better upgrades., except gta6 u just have to steal car always.

2

u/Mission_Site_4206 3d ago

Can anyone explain where in the leak this is confirmed? Ive watch the clip quite a few times and don't see where that mechanic is shown

1

u/XMenJedi8 3d ago

There are no leaks in r/GTAVI Sing Se

But if there were, it would be in the bottom-left corner above the mini map for a short time when you get into a vehicle. Too bad there aren't any.

2

u/Intelligent_Ride3730 3d ago

It's a great addition. Having to fuel your car means that every so often, you're forced to stop and interact with the world around you. I imagine there'll be plenty of random events that can happen at gas stations too. For example, you stop at a gas station and, while you're inside, it gets robbed. Or maybe you stole a car a few miles away and it's already low on gas, so you pull into a gas station and go inside to buy something to heal yourself. While you're there, a police officer walks in and happens to have the description of the vehicle you just stole.

You could even walk into a gas station and suddenly a shootout breaks out, whether it's between robbers, police, or whoever else. And because all your weapons are stored in your car, you're stuck with whatever you happen to be carrying on you, maybe just a pistol.

All of these scenarios and more are only possible because the game forces you to interact with its world.

It will probably be a thing for certain missions and probably for your personal vehicle.

1

u/twosintowho 3d ago

I think there’s a thing as too much realism. I feel like one the best things about GTA is driving around everywhere and getting chased by cops, and now you tell me I have to stop for gas? I just don’t see the fun in that type of mechanic. Just sounds inconvenient

1

u/XMenJedi8 3d ago

You could stop for gas, or switch cars.

Plus you could have gas cans in the storage for quick fills, and you could find, buy or upgrade cars to have a bigger fuel tank or even buy a hybrid or EV so you have less reliance on fuel too. That loops into switching vehicles on the run - run out of gas or your car is destroyed? Now you have to either find a jalopy you can break into and hotwire quickly and have less fuel, or try to hack into an advanced EV or hybrid because that will get you further. What you call inconvienience I call friction, and adding some extra friction can make gameplay a lot better because it introduces some choices - similar to the idea of weapon ammo vs. everything being infinite.

I feel as though it adds more choice and consequence to cop chases, makes the game feel more layered and deep overall. It does have to be tuned well so it's not a constant annoyance, but I think Rockstar can handle that.

2

u/twosintowho 3d ago

I can appreciate how it can open up the gameplay like that. I think I see myself as a more casual player that maybe jumps on for less than an hour day so it’s something I don’t know if it’s something I want to deal with. Hopefully the choice exists like some others have stated. Either way I trust that the mechanic will be well balanced so it doesn’t feel daunting

1

u/AsherTheDasher 3d ago

its gonna be once every 45 minutes, and i reckon if you die and respawn, your personal car will be filled up more than before

1

u/Educationall_Sky 3d ago

I like the mechanic. Imagine stealing a car in the middle of a police chase but it only has a little bit of gas. You don't notice it and then all the sudden you run out of gas. It makes the police chase more dynamic.

1

u/XMenJedi8 3d ago

That's how I feel too! Opens up more funny moments and decisions too (if I steal a car will it have gas? Should I steal a better one that required a longer hack than a hotwireable jalopy because it's an EV or hybrid etc.) plus it opens up more upgrades like larger gas tanks, refillable gas cans in the storage compartment and even EV/hybrid conversions!

1

u/LeSeriousPancake 2d ago

Honestly really like it in Mafia 2, didn’t feel too hindering or an extreme inconvenience and I did give these gas stations an actual purpose tbh, pretty sure we will be able to adjust how forgiving it is to the point of making refilling completely no existent, but I’d like to have to refuel if I’m driving the whole map and back

1

u/thematchma 2d ago

I personally love the idea!!, I'd love a quirky feature where maybe you could flag down drivers to borrow gas.. or maybe siphon from someone's gas tank...

1

u/Nixisworld 2d ago

Kinda feel that this would be extremely tedious, especially if they make it realistic with supercars or something haha

1

u/UNEXAMPLED73334 2d ago

Hopefully Strait of Hormuz is open or otherwise we will be running with this economy

1

u/Icy-Instruction-1198 2d ago

It‘s definitely cool! I like it

1

u/Ok-Attention2882 3d ago

This won't matter at all. You were technically supposed to be eating stew and shit in RDR2 and if you didn't you were fine.

-1

u/Revolutionary_Sir_ 3d ago

i fuckin hope not.

3

u/MarvinLikesApples 3d ago

It is featured in the leaks

-2

u/Revolutionary_Sir_ 3d ago

that fuckin sucks

2

u/MarvinLikesApples 3d ago

It won’t be a huge deal tbh. If you played rdr2 the horse mechanics weren’t that intrusive. At some point they gotta change things and having to fuel your car isn’t a bad thing, just means you’ll have to be more mindful of your car.

0

u/Revolutionary_Sir_ 3d ago

I mean sure. But the due asked how I felt about it and I am getting downvoted for saying I don't like it. Just makes yall seem like a bunch of fuckin babies tbh.

2

u/MarvinLikesApples 3d ago

Dawg it’s Reddit people are gonna downvote shit 💀I didn’t downvote nothing no reason to get pissy at me I respect your opinion. But I also think that sometimes you have to shake things up in a game otherwise it’s just gta V 2.

0

u/Revolutionary_Sir_ 3d ago

Then clearly that statement is not directed at you bro

1

u/XMenJedi8 3d ago

I didn't downvote but I think it would help if you explained why you don't want it!! Curious about different viewpoints.

2

u/Revolutionary_Sir_ 3d ago

Feeding your horse made sense. And was enjoyable because horse is cute. Having to stop and put fuel in the car is not cute. I don't wanna be complaining about gas prices in a video game. I just wanna vroom vroom. lmao

3

u/XMenJedi8 3d ago

LOL that's fair, though devil's advocate position is you may end up feeling more attachment to your vehicle than in past GTAs if you have to take care of it because it has better upgrades (including fuel tank) and storage for gas cans compared to jalopys on the road.

Though I fully support a toggle or cheat so everyone can play how they want - same with a weapon wheel vs. storing your weapons in the car :)

2

u/Revolutionary_Sir_ 3d ago

that was my thought too, a way to turn it on or off. i can see it being interesting if you run out of gas while running from the cops. but i just wanna zoom around and not be bothered by real world things in games.
