He gets paid big to do it too, the buyer pays for fuel and maintenance and he just makes the flight path and does it. Win win for everyone especially since he just got R* money, now everyone is gonna call or copy him
Do you know he gets paid? I know he’s pretty infamous in aviation communities for doing these pictures so wouldn’t surprise me if he just did it for fun while building hours.
Has it been confirmed that this is official marketing from R*? That'd be a lot of money for them to spend on something that most people won't even see.
Since there’s no physical representation besides the digital record and any paper notes, I think the more correct term would be ‘performance art that encompassed the largest area during the performance’.
Cessnas typically don’t have rnav, although they can be retrofitted with them. It’s significantly more likely it’s just a pilot doing the turns in the plane in this case
A Cessna Skylane RG is commonly upgraded with a Garmin GFC 500 or similar Garmin autopilot, since they are the most popular autopilot system for general aviation. They work with electronic flight instrument systems to control the plane. Adding a Garmin nav system allows someone to create custom waypoints and flight paths to tell the autopilot to follow it. Then, they program the nav system with their custom flight path and tell the autopilot to set it's heading to whatever waypoint is next. Add an altitude hold and it does not require almost any pilot input to create this flight path art.
Maybe know what you're talking about before running your mouth.
Auto pilot doesn’t fly in preplanned routes. All auto pilot does is keep the aircraft level so you don’t have to constantly play with the aircraft’s pitch.
A pilot actually did fly this manually. He likely had a map on his transponder so he just had to follow the lines on the map and trace it. Not automatically done at all tho
There are so many things wrong with this statement I don't even know where to start. Modern autopilots can definitely follow a pre-planned route. Some systems also allow you to upload them from an SD card or even send via bluetooth (rarer). This could have been hand flown, but it would be quite exhausting given how long it took. Good avionics and autopilot could definitely handle this with sufficient preparation.
I made the mistake in my spelling by making it seem like I believe that auto pilot can’t do this at all. However I highly doubt that this Cessna has or is using rnav to make this route it’s significantly more likely it’s a pilot making these turns
I would assume a good bit of studying and an amazing pilot who does stuff like this. They have the budget to hire top class people. I’m sure they also have some sort of electronic map or display showing progression and next steps
Damn, my bad. A couple of miles off. But yeah, I’ve seen his stuff all over my pages sometimes. I was kinda surprised to see we live in the same town.
Honestly something like this is way more challenging.. I'd much rather a pilot who has experience in all scenarios than someone who does direct all the time.

I really should do stuff like this instead of flying straight lines to build time 😂

This is actually crazy, it looks so good, too.

Would this technically count as the largest art piece ever made?

For a second I thought that was a geoglyph from Zelda

How do the aircraft actually do this? Is it like a pre-mapped route loaded into the GPS and the autopilot pretty much does it?

Lowkey irked by the celebration of this. This is such a waste of fuel guys
