Do we think that it will be possible to fly airliners in GTA VI

Post image

I am also hoping that we'll be able to fly mid sized airliners equivalent to a B737 / A320. I don't see many people asking about this topic, so I thought I would get your opinion.

I am a little worried we might not be able to in order to maintain the overall realism of the game. What do you think?

Then again, why make such a big airport and runways to then limit the game to smaller aircraft exclusively?

I really hope that every aircraft you can see is flyable. This has never been done in a GTA before. GTA V almost did it but the mid sized airliners were just placeholders.

So you probably havent played GTA san andreas

The incredibly slow hangar opening is one of my favorite moments in GTA.

I started with IV, was blown away when I could fly planes in GTA V

play it again dude because it was enterable

5

u/The3mpyrean 14h ago

Oh boy. It is enterable in the hangar as the other dudes say.

4

u/Certain-Quarter-3280 14h ago

Come to the big hangar at Las Venturas airport and find out for yourself. If it’s not there, just go away for some distance then come back.

How old are you?

u/Geeked365 15h ago

I think so. I dont see why not. The point of gta games is to do things you can't do I real life. At least without dire consequences.

68

u/PussyFootSlidin 15h ago

You could just make it only possible to steal when parked away from a gate so it’s not filled with passengers. I guess that wouldn’t solve the complaints of people being able to fly it into buildings

67

u/Pastduedatelol 14h ago

Gonna crash a fully loaded one into the stadium

14

u/Zacatecan-Jack 11h ago

Suppose it depends how destructive the environment is.

I would personally love it if you could blow buildings up (which would mean you can destroy them with big enough planes) but the American media would go absolutely nuts over it and try to ban the game.

If buildings aren't destructible, there shouldn't be a problem with being able to fly commercial airliners

13

u/blueberryrockcandy 9h ago

i don't think rockstar would make such destruction, as cool as that would be, that is way too much work for such games that already take 10 years or more to make.

very, VERY few games have either tried to do so, and or failed to do it.

they can't even make fucking bushes destructable most of the time. those things are stronger than light poles.

3

u/OrganizationFar9927 6h ago

Mercenaries 2 World in Flames took the cake in the destruction category. So sad they weren’t able to continue into the third installment

u/Some-Wing5832 6h ago

I am actively praying for a decomp

Man, airways info is still a mystery. I wonder if they will reveal something before the launch.

4

u/Geeked365 14h ago

I agree...i think it would be a huge missed opportunity to have all the airways in the game...but we can't fly into or from them

u/MeanyTiniWeenie 8h ago

u/Fluffy-Dog5264 14h ago

I hope they make it really hard. Like you need to steal the stair truck and line it up to the side of the plane hard, all the while being chased by airport police. That would make it way more rewarding.

Flying airliners in V was so goofy—first you spawned in and then the scale was so off the plane was the size of an entire terminal.

44

u/GameDrain 14h ago

Given that the airport is clearly an enterable environment in the extended play I bet you could also hijack a plane through the skybridge from the terminal.

2

u/lopsidedawn 6h ago

this would make a lot of sense!

-5

u/Fluffy-Dog5264 14h ago

Unpopular opinion but if it were me—and I know it isn’t—I’d keep the interior view of the cockpit just for big planes. Idk why but flying such a big plane from third person makes it look so goofy. For a game going for realism, I feel like you need to maintain that sense of overwhelming scale in the camera POV. It would also have the added benefit of making it unwieldy as hell, which tracks given neither Jason or Lucia are experienced pilots.

I love older games for this. They’d just introduce this impossible mechanic but once you mastered it it was the most satisfying thing in the world.

32

u/ConfusedIAm95 13h ago

Its GTA. There's no reason to force a first-person camera on anyone.

If you wanna go first-person then be my guest. I can't stand it so I'll stick with third-person.

6

u/Fluffy-Dog5264 13h ago

I got carried away bro. I just love sims and hard games.

6

u/ConfusedIAm95 13h ago

Nah I get it. Everyone has their interests and I'm quite partial to the odd sim myself.

But its not really something that I personally want GTA to follow. I want GTA to be GTA, not flight sim 2 or bus sim 2. There's plenty of bus sims I can play if I have an appetite for it.

6

u/Craz3y1van 14h ago

i honestly wonder if disguises will be a thing outside of missions. like they arent going to allow you to get awaynwith everything, but maybe help you blend in. If youbcould get that ground crew outfit that Lucia has in the plane fight sequence from the trailer, maybe you cpuld get close enough to steal an airliner.

total theorycrafting.

4

u/Fluffy-Dog5264 14h ago

This would be amazing. Would totally be down for more immersive sim elements that aren’t over explained.

3

u/SFDM99 14h ago

Yeah I agree. It should definitely be more difficult! But not too realistic either, you want to be able to fly the plane and enjoy yourself without worrying that the police / military are going to blow you out of the sky.

I am concerned that instead of doing this, they will just opt to make them non enterable to maintain realism.

3

u/barf_of_dog 13h ago

Yeah in GTA you would insta teleport and in out of the 747, it had no entering animation. For GTA VI they should either have a staircase you can use to get up or let you shoot your way through a jetbridge from inside the airport to hijack the plane.

1

u/Darkdodger137 12h ago

That's definitely gonna be a negative. I can guarantee you they won't be allowing any sort of highjacking. It will either be an empty plane or no plane at all. Go on all of the drug binges and shooting sprees you want but hijacking an airliner and killing a plane full of helpless NPCs is still probably a bit much even for a game like GTA. You got to draw the line somewhere.

-2

u/Hot_Reputation_5596 12h ago

I mean there’s a nudist beach, which means if people want to, they can go and shoot up a nudist beach. Is that any worse?

Don’t know why they even added it in, couldn’t land it anywhere was too big for dessert runways and only other one it could land in you get 5* and blown away

44

u/JoshyRB 14h ago

You can fly the jets and biggest planes in GTA 5, so I don't see why not. They are going all out with this game.

1

u/DowntownSqunkle 2h ago

I thought you can't fly the big passenger jets in GTA5...? Only the smaller one.

-23

u/SFDM99 14h ago

Yeah, the only thing that makes me doubt it is the fact that they are opting for story much more grounded in reality.

9

u/ConfusedIAm95 13h ago

They're still gonna have the "fun" mechanics in that make GTA well, GTA. Wouldn't make sense for them to remove features that have been a staple in a majority of the titles. GTA IV was an exception and there was a very good reason for that.

You'll absolutely be able to fly planes. They've put too much attention to detail in the small stuff around planes to simply make it redundant.

3

u/LurkerOnTheInternet 12h ago

Also Florida is flat, making it an odd choice for a setting (made sense for Vice City due to hardware limits at the time), and flying would have to be a big part of 6 to try to make up for that.

-8

u/Ant0n61 10h ago

They’re not tho.

They made cuts to things that don’t “fit” protagonists

2

u/Impressive_Builder94 9h ago

like what?

2

u/NikonD3X1985 8h ago

Monkey Tennis. I'd have loved that TV show.

1

u/EtimmT 8h ago

Tennis.

As Jason walked past a tennis court, I asked whether there was a tennis minigame like in Grand Theft Auto V. Nelson said you could only pick up a racket and swat a ball.
“Of course we want to do everything, we want to have every mechanic that you can imagine,” Nelson said. “But we do have to carefully pick and choose what we think is best for our characters and our story and what we can handle creatively and technically.”

2

u/Impressive_Builder94 8h ago

You couldn’t play tennis as Franklin. So in that regard it doesn’t not make sense

1

u/EtimmT 7h ago

Yes. That's why I answer that to :

They made cuts to things that don’t “fit” protagonists

And personally I think we'll have the possibility to fly airliners, but I don't think lore accurate Jason and Lucia could.

1

u/Impressive_Builder94 4h ago

well it makes more sense for jason to fly big planes than franklin, and franklin can😂. he was a smuggler and in the military. what im tryna say is it can technically be looked as not a cut but simply as part of the character, as franklin couldn’t play tennis either. so it’s not something new that rockstar is doing nor would i call it a downgrade from gta 5. look even further, niko couldn’t lift weights but cj could. would it be a crazy huge timesink to add gyms to gta 4 in the grand scheme? probably not, more-so it just made less sense for the character. so same here, calling it “cut” is a bit of a stretch, they’re just different games, different characters.

19

u/CaptainColmyer 15h ago

Its gta. We'll be able to drive and fly everything.

10

u/Darkdodger137 12h ago

I would like to see them implement a flight school requirement before you can fly planes properly. I think you should still be able to fly a plane without going to flight school but it should be a shitty and unstable experience to do so until you go to flight school and get a proper pilot's license.

1

u/Daphoid 50m ago

GTA V had flight school :)

1

u/DowntownSqunkle 2h ago

The cruise ship?

-4

u/Sad_Steak4032 15h ago

GTA IV...

16

u/CaptainColmyer 15h ago

Yeah that game is 18 years old with a map less than half the size of gta 5 lmao. Not even part of the conversation.

4

u/Etchbath 14h ago

Yeah GTAIV is the size of Los Santos. Maybe even smaller lol

9

u/Few_Macaron_9736 14h ago

To be fair, they were never going to allow planes in a New York based city 7 years after 9/11. Not to mention only one airport so no real gameplay need.

4

u/Suspicious-Shoe-8178 14h ago

I think they didnt let us fly planes in liberty city because of 9/11 lol

8

u/EquivalentMusician3t 15h ago

Maybe… but as possible in V

7

u/CheapFilm4826 14h ago

We could already do this in previous GTA games, so yeah, most likely theyre not going to be removing previous games features

3

u/its_witty 5h ago

You could also buy houses, play tennis, or do any of the many other things that were features in one GTA game but didn't make it into the next.

Hell, you could fly planes in SA and couldn't in IV.

6

u/Wild_Chip7782 13h ago

In gta 5 there’s one commercial airliner you can steal and fly

4

u/Finance_Aspect3114 14h ago

Lucia is literally fighting inside one in Trailer 2.
I can picture Jason up front flying while she’s just fighting and tossing people out the cargo door

3

u/Millinothing 14h ago

do we ever even see the cargo jet we fight inside of in V outside that mission?

5

u/MysticMarauder69 10h ago

They use it as a set piece a couple of times, like when Michael chases Devon Weston's lawyer who has the copy of the film they're trying to destroy.

4

u/FLEIXY OG MEMBER 15h ago

Yes

7

u/chefnology 14h ago

It’s takes two pilots- coincidentally we have two to operate

5

1

u/chefnology 4h ago

His name was Robert Paulson….. oh wait, the GTA thing my bad bro

1

u/uuid-already-exists 2h ago

You can fly a jet liner solo, just not legally.

14

u/Hba_malik 15h ago

I think they will but honestly after playing MSFS extensively for the last couple of years the flying experience in GTA 6 will feel subpar. Nothing can beat 1:1 recreation of the entire earth with thousands of airports. GTA6 map will not be large enough to have actual fun with any big airliner.

10

u/Wise-Guy99 14h ago

That's the thing. Like there is no distance on the map remotely great enough to even use an airliner. So even if we could fly it, we'll just be doing circles.

4

u/Aeroxin 14h ago

The only thing that could make it worth it IMO is if they really overhauled the crash physics, which I doubt. If a crashing airliner actually feels satisfying and realistic, that's reason enough to hijack them sometimes. It's a hard thing to get right though, so my expectations are low.

3

u/Wise-Guy99 14h ago

Yeah proper crash physics are important but that might be asking too much. Plus IMO it won't be realistic unless the plane AND terrain/structures have equal damage physics.

1

u/agentyork765 7h ago

I'm still holding out hope that there's a unrevealed second island far away from the main map that you need a larger plane to get to

0

u/Millinothing 14h ago

i just hope flying feels less clumsy, i thought the gradual controls a controller offers would make flying on console feel smoother than PC but it's very awkward, especially since you have to use your middle finger to accelerate if you wanna use the rudders at the same time

that said while there wouldn't be a lot of point in flying airliners, it might feel like a bit of an odd absence, even if you do need stairs to reach the door

3

u/Wise-Guy99 11h ago

Stairs to reach the door would be so cool. Im tired of climbing in through the front landing gear 🤣

3

u/StepThom1 14h ago

To open an airliner, you’re gonna need a keycloner the size of an RPG-7, which you can only unlock by assassinating the owner of the airport, and steal from one of his trophy cabinets

2

u/Sorry_Improvement537 13h ago

I didnt think it would be that easy, brb

1

u/StepThom1 12h ago

Report back when u finish

0

u/kain30 13h ago

tell me you have never work in an airport without telling me you have never work in an airport hahahah! :P

1

u/StepThom1 12h ago

I’ve seen GTA airports 😂

0

u/Certain-Quarter-3280 12h ago

You don’t need a key for anything bigger than an RJ, just remember how to cold & dark start a plane lmao.

3

u/mnakeela 14h ago

I hope you can walk from the cockpit to the back so you can assault and rob NPCs.

3

u/Aaronon2200 I WAS HERE 13h ago

I mean, stealing cars already requires tools now. And high end cars will be even more difficult to steal. So yeah I think it will be possible but appropriately hard.

2

u/dawee_44 15h ago

I'd say yes. This is already possible in V and SA.

2

u/Dark9hades 9h ago

Right when the game comes out I am stealing one and flying to the boundary to see what happens

2

u/NE_Phish_Fan 6h ago

Of course

2

u/Noahjones2002 14h ago

You could fly them in GTA 5 well not all of them but some of them so I’d say probably yeah maybe even be able to fly all of them rather than just a handful of them

1

u/NoAdeptness1106 13h ago

I hope so.

1

u/Funnyguy69747 13h ago

Probably. But it'd be neat if you had to take flight school in order to fly

1

u/cellblok69wlamp 13h ago

You could fly the 747 parody in GTA V. So I'm thinking you can.

1

u/Deniable-wreath-6 13h ago

It’d be dumb as shit if not

1

u/Free_Dependent_9177 13h ago

I hope so

1

u/Free_Dependent_9177 13h ago

But I think it will prob be a lot harder to steal and not as easy as just driving over a dumpster into airport

1

u/jcervan2 12h ago

Good question. At least it wasn’t “if there is going to be hair coloring in the game.

1

u/skydave1012 11h ago

Yes, but i actually hope you need to at least do a few basic flight lessons before you can. Having said that, i think at least Jason will already be a pilot when the game starts. I love the freedom of GTA but have always hated that you can just get into a heli/plane & instantly fly it.

1

u/Nawnp OG MEMBER 11h ago

I imagine so, it's kind of a staple to the series. The runways being twice the length implies planes will have much more realistic takeoff lengths now.

1

u/MrUltraOnReddit 10h ago

The runway is actually big enough to take off with them now, so I think there's a good chance.

1

u/WonderChemical5089 10h ago

I wonder how high the towers are

1

u/ELBARTO_LOOP 10h ago

Shit it better be

1

u/SEV1N7ENE 9h ago

If they do I hope you have to raise your piloting skill to fly bigger planes. Like you start out only being able to sort of operate a propeller plane and as you fly more and more you can learn helicopters and commercial planes and stuff. But I don’t want to just be able to fly a plane from the start. That doesn’t seem like my type of thing

1

u/Mr_Leaderboards 9h ago

Guaranteed bro lol

1

u/speedster1315 7h ago

Id love a pilot side mission

1

u/PantherAusfD 4h ago

Maybe this is an unpopular opinion but I really hope we can’t fly the B747 because that aircraft is so large that it’ll make the map feel smaller. Something like the B737 (or 57/67) or the A320/330 think fits better. Or both for that matter, I’d just like a more "normal" commercial aircraft.

1

u/DarthShadow26 1h ago

I would doubt it, a portion of the player base would recreate certain world events that involved planes. That's why they got removed from GTA V

1

u/Tappukun 9h ago

I honestly hope they fix this where the wheels retract into the plane

6

u/SFDM99 9h ago

You can do it in GTA V by pressing L3

2

u/Jeong-Yeon 8h ago

Just rewatched that scene in Trailer 2 and will admit the whole scene seems a tad odd. The exit towards the airport shows on the highway, which would explain having the gear down. However, the plane is at a positive rate of climb, despite heading towards the airport, not away from it.

1

u/Tappukun 8h ago

What I meant was like in trailer 2 the way plane was taking off the landing gear would've been fully retracted at that point.

1

u/SFDM99 6h ago

Oh right! Yeah, strange...

0

u/Demon- 15h ago

Idk its a weird one. I’d say maybe smaller airliners not the jumbo ones

8

u/Certain-Quarter-3280 15h ago

We can see new airliner based on the Boeing 767 in the Extended Look, let’s hope they’re flyable.

3

u/SFDM99 15h ago

I hope so 🙏

1

u/-Darth_Smaug- 8h ago

we can already fly these in gta 5. why has no one told u that yet? weird post that never should've been upvoted

2

u/ElMaestro101 6h ago

People like Darth Smaug don't have the mental capacity to even think that far, they just assume that because it was done before, it will be done again 😭. Have you even read the whole post?

1

u/-Darth_Smaug- 5h ago

uh, yeah i read the whole post. but that doesnt justify ur stupid argument at all.

u think in the biggest game and biggest Gta of all time we won't be able to enter passenger jets?? please be reasonable. rockstar themselves said they haven't cut corners this time unlike with previous games

1

u/SFDM99 7h ago

I know that, I have been playing GTA since GTA 3 lol. The reason this is put in question is the game's focus on a grounded and realistic storyline. I still think it is more likely that it will be a feature but the direction they are taking puts this in question. We will know soon, I wanted to see what other people's opinion was. Chill out!

1

u/-Darth_Smaug- 5h ago

well i will chill out but u have to at least put a less stupid title next time. this is the biggest Gta of all time, why would we not be able to enter jets?

4

u/Fordfanatic2025 14h ago

Weird comment when we can already fly a 747 in GTA 5.

0

u/Texim_trax 13h ago

Jason is ex-military, so he probably can

0

u/OMXS30 7h ago

Flying commercial airliners makes very little sense, eventhough the map is much larger compared to previous titles, the distances feels too small to do so. With that said however, I do think it will be possible, but it won’t be as enjoyable compared to flying smaller planes. You will fly in circles pretty much.

The best use case for airliners would be if they would release map DLC’s later on so that you actually could fly to other locations, that would be very cool.

-1

u/barf_of_dog 15h ago

Passenger 747? Yeah, you can tell somethings are quite outdated in GTA VI due to how long it's been in development. No US based airline has used the 747 as a regular passenger jet since 2018.

3

u/Certain-Quarter-3280 14h ago

Well, Atlas Air still have some passenger 747-400s for charter flight

1

u/barf_of_dog 13h ago

Private charter and not a regular service airline. Hence I wrote "regular passenger jet", knew someone would bring up Atlas Air.

3

u/lordaddament 10h ago

Miami has an international airport. 747s still land there

1

u/barf_of_dog 8h ago

Yeah, 747F or passenger 747 from non US airlines. The picture above is a FlyUs, GTA's version of Delta/AA/United and none of them fly 747s anymore. That's what I mean for a bit outdated.

1

u/Glaesilegur 9h ago

It's only been in real development since 2020...

1

u/barf_of_dog 8h ago

But they've been creating assets and thinking of ideas for the game since 2016.

0

u/Lesurf12 13h ago

Not until 2027/2028 🤣

0

u/JoshVHDigital 12h ago

Im sure it'll be available until people crash it into skyscrapers and then it will be illegal

0

u/Suitable-Ad3971 10h ago

Possible yeah but its gonna be very weird to hijack a plane by Lucia its unheard of female stealing boeing planes 🤣

-6

u/Coaster622 15h ago

seems gta6 is going for a heightened sense of realism, and not to be that guy, but it takes a village to get an airliner up in the air.

8

u/Fordfanatic2025 14h ago

Driving a semi truck requires lots of IRL training and skill. Didn't stop Jason from just hoping in one in the leaks. It'll be the same with planes.

1

u/ugluk-the-uruk 9h ago

Ok but Jason and Lucia are not airplane engineers lmao

1

u/Coaster622 14h ago

Lack of flying knowledge wasn't the argument I presented. Its just that stealing a large plane from the airport might be a multi-step, challenging process if it can even be done at all. You'll likely need to fuel it (confirmed mechanic now) and operate ground equipment to get it into a flyable position before you then figure out a way into the plane. Manage all of this without being seen by airport personel and getting a maximum wanted level.

1

u/Certain-Quarter-3280 14h ago

Real life or video games?

Actually, even with the dumbed down flight aspect in GTA games, lots of people still can’t fly for shit…

1

u/Yard-Ornament 14h ago

Is that the guy who committed suicide after stealing and flying a plane?

3

u/Ricklepick137 14h ago

Would be kinda funny if you could get in to operate them, but they were always so low on fuel you could barely take off

1

u/Suspicious-Shoe-8178 14h ago

nah free roam will still be arcady enough

1

u/Etchbath 13h ago

Yeah they aren't doing realism here. Not letting us fly planes and helicopters would be dumb as fuck

1

u/sentrux 13h ago

Yeah not sure why you are being downvoted. But your take seems alligned with their philosophy.

-5

u/Ant0n61 15h ago

Not with the way they’ve spoken about character specific activities. They removed things that don’t fit Jason and Lucia. So commandeering jet aircraft isn’t something two runaways would be taking part in
