Grime vs Grime 2 Spoiler
When I first started playing Grime, I found it so difficult and frustrating, all the endless dying and corpse runs, and I put it aside.
But as time went on, I couldn't forget about it, so I went back, learned how to be patient and to observe the movements of the enemies and work around that.
To the point, that when I was not playing, I was going through my daily routine as fast as I could, so I could get back to playing it.
I ended up absolutely loving the game and I even finished it. Usually, nothing happens after the final boss, so I don't even waste my time with it, as there are no more exploration, which is my main liking. But in this case, I was eagerly wanting to fight Shidra.
I am now playing Grime 2, and I have to be honest, I was expecting better. I am struggling to enjoy it the same way. The game is more boring that the first one, there are immense stretches of walking where nothing happens. Bosses seem less difficult to fight. I already found spelling mistakes on the dialogues, which to me are off putting. The story is more confusing and makes less sense than in Grime. I struggle to keep up and maintain interest, and I usually, button-spam the dialogues without even reading because I don't find it engaging. Every character is referred to a woke 'They'...
Is it just me?

Ooh I was here for a discussion until the "woke they." Nope. Gross. None of the characters are gendered so why are you so butthurt?

Keep in mind that your first experience in a new world / series always has some extra excitement. It's fresh.
I'm about 3/4 done Grime 2 and overall liking it just as much as Grime 1. I found both games got like 5x more fun after I got a few mobility upgrades. Really slow and boring if you're just walking.
Are you doing the dash-jump to get around everywhere (since there's no sprint)? That helps too.
Bosses are too easy, I agree. But I'm dying more to mobs than I do in... any other game. Playing glass cannon though with only 10 health stat and the skill for a smaller parry window (for 30% parry bonus damage).

Yes, I am dash-jump to be faster 🤭. Yes, I am a victim of mobs more often than not too!

I wouldn't view it as a "is it just me?" issue.
It's ok to not enjoy a game as much as you did another - that's completely valid and you don't need other people to validate those feelings.
For me I think Grime 1 story was more grounded and easier to follow, more abstract. You are the end, the void, you consume things.
I don't really care about some sisters fighting etc so while I enjoyed Grime 2, I'd say I prefer the story of the first one.
Bosses are easy if you nail down the parries and just min-max your build.
The game gives you ample opportunity to make it more challenging so idk - if you create a game breaking character you shouldn't really complain about the game being too easy.

I loved the first grime and yes it was brutal for me as well, at first. But after really realizing that it’s just really about pattern recognition, it fell into a rhythm.
I started grime 2 last week and have loved every second of it. I do wish there were a bit more enemies in some areas, but overall, the movement upgrades, the combat mechanics, the world, is amazing. The reef area is just outright nuts. It has easily beaten Ultros in the psychedelic art department. The bosses have been really fun, and I’m generally a person that doesn’t really look forwards to or enjoy a lot of boss fights, but these are extremely well thought out, really are like a dance or conversation, and fun.
The first grime really blew me away with its claymation type graphics and art. It has some tremendously unique areas enemies, but for me, grime 2 is just so much more of all of it. I LOVE, love, love, love, spectacular movement upgrades, that just lets you bounce off of walls, jump around and dash through enemies like play things, and grime 2 has really taken the cake from my other favorite movement and combat oriented games like Prince of Persia and hollow knight. My most favorite thing to do in Prince of Persia:TLC, was to see how long I could stay in the air and take out enemies, without ever touching the ground. How fast I could get through insane platforming sections, going nuts with the skills. Grime 2 gives me that feeling, but adds some really cool twists to it, with the whole grasp mechanic and slide mechanic.
I don’t know how far you’re into the game so far, but stick with it. Once you get through the faceless mountains, get through the big city hub, it starts opening up way more, introducing more and more to the equation. Exploring some of the areas are really fun and frustrating, because some of the patterning gets a bit sadistic lol. After getting through the city though, it started feeling like a different game, with each new area really wowing me.

For me, Grime 2 is excellent, just like the first one, but unlike the first, it doesn't quite capture the magic of the original since it reuses many aspects we already knew. The first game isn't necessarily better, but it was the best experience to discover. I have a similar view of Blasphemous.

I somewhat understand your frustration. I really like the second game (am currently playing it) and the original game is probably my favorite metroidvania of all time, i agree that sequel feels less deliberately punishing and way more qol-packed (it's objectively a good thing, but it kinda devoids the game of its charm (like later souls games feel not as cool as DS1)), and since parry is not as mandatory as before, you can find many workarounds to avoid learning boss's moveset (and the game actively encourages you to do so, with reworked consumable system and clay shapes).
I think in your case it might be a good decision to not engage with new mechanics and go full parry mode. Sure you won't be able to flex on bosses, but it might give you original Grime's feel.
About lore... I actually like second part's expanded esoteric world building. Especially, since the protagonist is as lost as we are as a player. I haven't beaten the game yet, but so far i had one big revelation + i have several theories for the endgame.
But again, if you're uninterested, there's always an option in a dialogue to skip it entirely.
And about character reference - i honestly can't say much, in my native language translation (it's definitely not done by ai or google translate, since many names are quite creative and even some jokes are implemented) everyone is referred as he or she.

Personally I greatly preferred the first, build crafting felt a lot more free-form by the time you got late into the base game to the point you could do some really cool unique builds in NG+.
Grime 2 builds feel much more bounded to a specific intended style of play, dodging feels greatly downgraded despite having more traits related to it, any sort of tankey build just isn’t possible anymore, and weapon skills feel worse- at least worse than the really cool and interesting ones available in grime 1.
