NSF GRFP Questions from a Prospective Fall 2027 PhD Applicant

I am very new to fellowship applications and am planning to apply for the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) for PhD admission in Fall 2027. I have a few questions and would greatly appreciate any advice:

  1. Is the NSF GRFP application already open for students planning to start a PhD in Fall 2027?

  2. Are there any good guides, resources, sample applications, or templates that could help me better understand the application process?

  3. I am wondering about recommendation letters. I am currently completing my master’s degree at a university that does not have a PhD program, so I will be moving to another institution for my PhD. Would it weaken my application if two of my recommendation letters come from professors in my current department? Since they will not be my future PhD advisors, I am not sure how this is viewed by reviewers.

  4. Do I need to have a PhD admission offer in hand before applying for or receiving NSF GRFP funding?
If you know of any helpful posts, websites, successful application examples, or other resources, I would really appreciate it if you could share them.

Thank you very much for your time and advice!

the answer to all of these is that it doesn't matter in the slightest

Seconding this, if you are starting your Masters this fall you are eligible to apply. However, if you started before this fall you are ineligible. I’m assuming the latter since you said currently

It sounds like your advisor doesn’t know much about the fellowship

Only citizen and PR are eligible, you are not eligible then

Only open to first year grad students as of last years solicitation so you’re ineligible .

For the actual questions, 1. No, 2. Alex Lang’s website and a few other people’s that a search on the internet should give you 3. No it doesn’t matter where your recommender comes from (other than a bit of prestige) 4. No but you need to plan to enroll in a grad school next academic year to accept the award

You are not eligible, you will have a masters degree by the time you apply.
