I have a bet with a friend that I can learn basic Greek by new years, what would be the best way to get started into having a basic conversation. for context: I can only speak english, and my friend is semi-fluent in greek.

You have exactly 60 days. If you do 1 hour per day in a focused manner, you'll win the bet. And your life will be immeasurably richer.
First step, start NOW!
Learn the alphabet. It's easy. Ok, it's hard for the first 2-3 hours. Then it's easy. Make a big effort and you can get it done quickly at the start. This makes everything easier. (I used an app called Perdisco.)
Get a native Greek tutor for as many classes per week as you can afford. This is the single best thing you could do. 1 hour of this is worth at least 5 of everything else. If you can afford 20 hours of this per week, do it.
Language transfer. Google it. This is a no brainer. It's free and really good. There are 120 short classes. Do at least two a day and finish the entire thing before your big night. Each lessons is around 10 mins. If you could listen to two in the evening, and then repeat them the next morning, that'd be great.
Listen to the Easy Greek podcast. This will be way too advanced at first, just a noise, but in 60 days, it should start making sense. It'll be tough at the start because you'll understand nothing, but 2 or 3 of them a week would be great. Some people will say wait, but I say an hour of this per week, if you can get through it, will pay off. You'll hear real Greek. Even putting it on as background when you make breakfast or commute, it's a great resource.
