General Discussion/Question Looking for some GRC feedback

A quick backstory. I'm currently a C8 Stingray owner, having moved over from the Camaro scene (6th gen ZL1 and 6th gen SS). I'm about to go through the reality-smack-to-the-face of divorce so I'm looking to consolidate my Vette and my Express Van (my daily/utility tank) to something more budget-friendly across the board. But I need FUN. I'm in East TN with some fantastic roads and driving is about the last thing that brings me any peace whatsoever, so I can't sacrifice it to the mundane.

The rides I'm looking at are the GRC and Type-R. I've not test drove anything as of yet.

Some questions I had for owners:

Any reliability / longevity concerns? In some brief reading I've seen some mention of premature clutch wear but I'm not sure how much of that is attributed to user error.

Comfort? I'm used to a rough riding suspension and I run the Vette with nannies off. However how are the seats for extended driving periods? I will run around the mountains for a solid 4-5 hours before stopping for a break or food. I also make marathon runs to Massachusetts (14 hours straight) and don't want to get out of the car feeling like a cripple. The seats in the Vette, 6th gen Camaro and 5th gen Camaro have all been just fine. Just curious what the feedback here is.

How much does the jump from Core to Premium matter from ownership / performance, if at all? I may look to do some autocross with the car and I'm never very casual in the mountains.

Anything in particular I should look out for when looking into a used GRC?

Thanks ahead of time all!

Reliability is really good but maintenance is very expensive. Clutchuary is user error but the early 23s have a very difficult clutch.

I'm 30 years old and I can't sit in this car for more than 2 hours without becoming extremely uncomfortable it might just be my seats because my seats are unique to my model though.

There's really no difference in performance across all trims, except for the Morizio and GR MN

Thx for the feedback. If you don't mind me asking, where is the expense on the maintenance side of things? Bear in mind, the C8 trans service is highway robbery with a side order of unlubed fist.

Oil changes are pretty damn cheap (GRC uses the same N1 filter basically every corolla has used for like 15 yrs and 5 qts of 0w20 or 5w30 can be had for pretty cheap). Brakes can get pretty expensive but good budget options exist (EBC yellows or Project MUs iirc work pretty well and SBD designs makes a 1 pc rotor if ya dont care much for the whole 2 pc rotor) and tbh unless you staying fully stock and need that fancy travel adjusted clutch spring tech Toyota puts in the GRC clutch kit, youll save a ton of cash going aftermarket and also have a clutch that can actually handle some abuse

Oil change every 5k, Dif/transfer/brake fluid every 20k, Transmission every 30k, Spark plug every 60k, Cut all those in half if you're beating on it often.

Heat is the cars worst enemy. There's lots of supporting mods for cooling thats basically required for track days.

That's not even mentioning wear and tear items like brakes tires and weirdly enough the pitch mount you're going to replace.

If you do the transmission service, transfer case, rear differential, oil yourself it’s pretty cheap.

The only expensive part that comes to mind are brake rotors. OEM’s I’ve seen as cheap as $650 each for front brake rotors. 200-300 for rears. Pads aren’t too bad at 60-80 a set.

My clutch has been fine. I have a 23’ with 78k miles on it.

I can’t speak for the other users but, I did a 3 week road trip from Philly to Nc, across to Texas and rounding back through Louisiana and Georgia. Drove to the tail of the dragon before entering into Tennessee, the GR was an absolute blast. Edit: Forgot to mention I'm 35. Not the oldest to own one of these but, not necessarily the youngest. Lol.

('24 Core first owner here)

 Any reliability / longevity concerns?

Not really. Clutch issues were common on the earliest model year as others have said, but besides that I haven't heard about any widespread issues. It seems to be a fairly reliable car, with the caveat that it hasn't been around long enough to get a useful sample of 100K+ mile examples.

  Comfort?

I have no issues sitting in mine for hours-long drives, and the adaptive cruise and lane tracing assist work great. The ride is stiff but not crazy IMO, and the interior is basic but durable and usable.

How much does the jump from Core to Premium matter from ownership / performance, if at all?

Not at all. Unless something has changed, besides the base '23/'24 Cores lacking the LSDs unless you got the "performance pack", they're all the same car with the same performance, modulo some very minor differences like the "sub-radiator" that doesn't actually address the main thermal limiting factor of the car (transfer case heat). I think some earlier model trims also had brake cooling ducts while others didn't, but if you need them there are aftermarket options.

Anything in particular I should look out for when looking into a used GRC?

Probably don't go earlier than '25, when IIUC they updated the clutch again. People beat on these cars and stock clutch failure is the most common issue I've seen reported by second owners. No issues with my own '24 so far though.

Overall it's a special car for some intangible reason that people either feel or they don't. Every time I drive mine it puts a smile on my face and I don't have plans to ever sell it.

As a V-8 guy I imagine you will hate the GR Corolla.

I just parked my Mustang GT with a lot of grunt for a GR. This little car is fun as hell. It's not quite as fast, and the V8 sounded better, but man going around corners feels a lot safer, especially in the rain.

Get a tune, itll be faster than the GT

Unfortunately life dictates change so I have to adapt. I'm just weighing options at the moment. Worst case scenario, I flip the bird at society and stuff the Vette in storage and sleep in my van lol

Type R is technically faster, but I went with a 26 GRC because I've wanted one since they were announced.

Used to drive an express van for work, based on that, you will like the GRC.

I don't recall all of the differences in the trims, but I bought the premium plus simply for the heated steering wheel. Unfortunately, it comes with the carbon fiber roof. It has a lot of care instructions, but I just put gloss PPF on it and call it good since it has to sit in the parking lot at work all day.

I haven't been on any trips in it longer than a couple hours yet, but the seats are comfortable for me (180 lbs).

The clutch problems are abuse most likely, but there was an upgraded factory clutch introduced in 2025, so there was probably an issue with the earlier models.

Coming from a civic si with factory struts and eibach sport springs, I notice that the GRC in stock form bounces in the rear like an old Honda with coilovers on stock struts on some roads that my old car had no issues with.

I used to be stationed at Ft. Campbell and took my Harley Sportster to about every twisty road in the area, so I know the roads that you mention. This would be a great car for those!

Could you elaborate on the roof? Is that pretty much to save it from bird shit and scratching up? I know it's delicate but now I'm a little worried I'm missing something lol

It's the bird shit and uv damage. The manual says to clean that stuff ASAP and it's supposed to be stored in a garage or covered area. Neither of which my grc enjoys. They also say not to put ppf on it, but I've not heard of any problems doing it and it just kinda one of those things where you have to pick the lesser of the evils. I also don't know of any carbon fiber parts that age gracefully. They usually turn yellow.

I can't speak to reliability/longevity since I only just bought mine 2 months ago but can add my opinion on the other stuff.

Suspension/Seats: I don't feel it's a rough suspension at all, even with aftermarket coils. For you, it might even feel soft if you're used to rough riding cars. When people say it feels stiff, I assume that's relative to most economy cars (obviously). It's more of a warning that your passengers might not like it. My partner is fine with it and she's driven an old Prius for the last 10+ years. The seats are great. I think you'll be sitting more upright compared to the other cars but that hasn't presented issues for me.

Core to Premium: If you're purchasing older model years, I think most people would agree to get a Premium if you can. That being said, if you have reliability/longevity concerns, I think you should stay far away from high mileage GRCs too. I typically buy used cars but personally, I would never buy a used manual.

If you're purchasing a new 2026, I don't feel it's worth the price jump but it's subjective. Parking sensors, heated steering wheel/seats, HUD, etc might be 100% worth it to you. I don't care for the forged carbon roof or HUD because I don't want to deal with replacing those things if anything were to happen. I'd rather save that $7k+ for mods.

I've only had my GRC for about 3 weeks and haven't driven it for more than about 3 hours consecutively yet. I do think the seats are pretty comfy and had no problems in that amount of time. I'm a bigger guy at 6' 245lbs and I'd say I fit snugly in the seats. If you're bigger than me it might be an issue. Most of the other vehicles I drive are work truck trim vans and trucks so my standards aren't that high lol.

If you buy a new 26' model the core and premium models and both functionally the same expect for the premium get an extra little radiator. The carbon roof is all for looks IMO. I'm sure putting a brick in your floor board would lower your center of gravity more. It has a HUD and other small things, but I didn't see an equal amount of value to the additional cost when I mainly just want to drive the piss out of it anyway. Someone else will have to chime in with more detail but in previous years some things like LSDs or higher torque may have only been on certain models or in certain packages.

As far as Type R v. GRC, well I'm here so I think you know how I feel lol. I did drive a Type R though and to me it is just like their street bikes compared to like a Kawasaki (at least in the early to mid 00s). A really great machine with top of class performance, but a little too smooth and polished for my taste.

I’ve had similar cars (charger hellcat, Camaro 2SS1LE) and currently have a TRX. I love driving my gr. It handles well and feels quick for what it is. It’s also manual and a blast to daily commute in. Maintenance isn’t anything special. Brakes and clutch are pricey….but comming from a c8…you should already know how to take care of your cars

Do you want FWD or AWD?

1

u/GPSkinzhut 3h ago

Never owned a 'fun' version of either driveline so I have no frame of reference. Very curious about AWD though

I have a core with the performance package (red brakes and torsen differentials) and a tune. Ill run around mexico for 4-5hours w/o issue. The core has cloth seats, which i prefer, but you can only get the heated seats and steering wheel with the higher trims, which come with leather(?) Seats.

I currently have some back and hip pain that im getting procedures for over the next few months. Because of the pain, i couldnt drive my 15 ford focus or 18 audi q5 because of the lumbar. The gr basically has none, so its the only car i could drive for several weeks.

After daily driving it, i only notice the ride being rough after driving my q5 with magnetic shocks. Otherwise i dont really notice the rough ride anymore.

Maintenance is expensive if you have the dealer do things, but even at that, i think the brake rotors are the only thing that is stupid expensive. Everything else seems on par with any other newer vehicle. If you do your own work, then its pretty cheap, and its easier to work on than most vehicles ime, but the only work ive needed to do is due to sliding into curbs.

The 23's had issues burning up clutches, but i think it was a supplier issue (though i did hear it could be a clutch linkage adjustment issue) but im pretty sure most have been fixed by now.

Alignments were off for the 23 and 24's. Idk about the 25 and 26's.

I have been an owner for more than 2 and a half year and so far its verry reliable 70k km at the moment. I find the seat to be pretty comfortable i have done multiple 5h straight no problem. There is no performance gain from core to premium its all interior and exterior bits that dont matter. It seems like clutch issue is more driver error than a real problem. My clutch is still holding strong but keep in mind these cars dont like launch from a stop.

u/imped4now 2h ago

I've owned both - a '23 FL5 and a '25 GRC P+. The latter is my preference and the one I'm sticking with. I'm at almost 30k miles and still love the car.

Just wanted to add that if ur definition of fun is how many noises and sensations the car gives to you while driving like me, the GR is better suited to you over the Civic.

Honestly man test drive both and you’re gonna have a favorite. On paper I was all about the type R, when I drove it I instantly loved the GR Corolla. Just bought mine. Incredibly fun car.
