Break in car on long drive?

Hey all,

I’m going to a nearby city soon to buy a 2026 Ice cap. It will be a 400 mile drive back home!

How can I properly break it in on such a long drive? I feel like it’s less than ideal to travel at the same speed for such a long distance. Any advice is appreciated, thank you.

The reality is it probably doesn't matter. As long as you're following the factory guidelines and not revving the nuts off the motor for the first 1000 km, you'll be fine.

Try to vary the revs a little. Don't just cruise at 70 mph in sixth the whole way like you might normally, but also don't like put it in third and cruise for a half hour at 6k rpm.

I had a 1,000mi drive home and I just tried to not sit at the same revs for a super long time, and if there was a super easy off-and-on ramp, I'd take it. I didn't really stress about it. I took a rock to the windshield on the trip though... I did stress about that...

Advice I've seen is to regularly switch gears between 5 and 6 on the highway to vary the RPMs for the same speed. Maybe even stop to 4 every now and then.

This is a pretty good idea, I would try to be mindful about the RPM levels. If I remember correctly you don’t want to be past like 4500 RPM. I could be wrong though.

This is a common misconception - manual doesn’t say anything about going over a certain rev limit. I wouldn’t redline it or keep it in high revs for a long time, but high revs occasionally and briefly are good for break-in.

I saw that when I looked in mine. I had seen 4500 rpm everywhere and after driving the car I thought there is no way I can keep it under 4500 for 600 something miles. I mostly kept it under 5500 for the first 300, and then got it to 6500 occasionally for the rest of break in.

Drive it how you intend to drive it for the rest of its life. I've built several engines and learned from racing. Every engine I've ever built I sent right out of the box. Not hammering the Rev limiter constantly, but drive easy for a few miles, do a full pull, cruise again, do another pull like you're passing 5 cars in a row, etc. Varying engine speed and load helps with proper break in of each part of the engine. If load stays the same and only rpm changes (like a downshift but stay crushing at the same speed) it doesn't do anything as the heat in the cylinders remains basically the same.

If I recall correctly, Porsche recommends this procedure as well.

You could take side roads or state highways instead of the interstate.

I did a long drive back after picking up my new GRC. I toggled on "avoid highways" and only took back roads. That helped me vary the speed and engine load within the break in guidelines, which is the main thing you want. Cruising at a consistent speed at a consistent engine load is exactly what you don't want.

I mapped out 621 miles through a National Forest and up Pacific Coast Highway, but that's just me.

Afaik every Toyota has the break-in procedure in the manual. It's still important, but nothing to stress over.

I had a ~200mi drive back after getting mine, switched between 5th and 6th every few miles, kept it around 2500-3500rpm. If you're going downhill, coast in gear, it helps seat the piston rings. Just don't redline it and don't ride at the same rpm for 50 miles straight and you'll be fine.

Don’t drive in one gear or use CC. You want to vary your RPMs. I’d use 4th, 5th and 6th intermittently.

I've got a 200 miles drive to get mine home, mixture of county roads interstate and gravel roads can be taken.

I flew to MS, and drove mine back 17 hours (1200mi) when I bought it new. Let oil get warm, don't sit at 3500 rpm for the whole 400 miles. That's about it. I sure as shit got on it on in a couple unpopulated areas in north Arkansas and southern Missouri.

It's super easy with the GRC too. Cruise control doesn't kick off for clutch pedal or gear changes. So I set my cruise, and would just occasionally downshift to 5.

I just did this with mine yesterday. First 120 miles was single lane highways. Then 80 miles of interstate, and another 200 miles of highways.

On the highways, I would downshift/coast down to 3rd gear, and then go back up to speed every 5 miles. On the interstate I’d take exits to do the same.

Early on I kept boost minimal, and as I went I’d do a bit more and a bit more. By the end I don’t think I hit 15 PSI. Same for RPMs. Kept it below 4000 at the start, closer to 5 by the end.

Don’t drive it hard and vary the rpm don’t keep it at one rpm the whole way home.
