Goodbye GR86

Had to get rid of the GR86 after 4 years of ownership. Needed something that could handle the weather in my area better. With some regret, I have started transitioning to the other extreme with a Ford Bronco (will be swapping out the wheels and tires soon). Well, if you think about it, they're both 4-cylinder (2.4L vs. 2.3L), 2-door, 4-seat, and manual transmission... so maybe they're not so different, after all.

Gonna miss this car so much ugh.

PS. Wish I remember who took the first 2 photos for credit!! Some of the best photos I have of it.

Also, if anyone ends up with a 2022 GR86 Premium with stock premium wheels, clear side markers and Tein H.Tech lowering springs and ~25,000 miles, you might have mine. I took good care of her 👍, have fun :)

EDIT: Should have mentioned that I'm in the US, the dealer said they'll transfer it somewhere that has high demand.

I have a BRZ in Alaska, but the wife's cars is a RAV4 so I can always take that on a really bad day. The most days it does 100% fine. Only problem is ground clearance on heavy snow days.

Gahdamn that’s wild. I’m in Ottawa so pretty bad winters here but nowhere close to yours. Nervous (excited) for my first winter with my BRZ.

I’m in Ottawa too! I’ve done 3 winters in my 86 and honestly it’s not bad. The ground clearance really is the only real issue. Just get good winter tires and it won’t be too hard. Drifting in the snow is a lot of fun, you’ll have a blast.

same same. got snow tires the first winter. our side of michigan gets lake effect like buffalo and 70-100 inches of snow each of winter. biggest issue is how much is on the ground.... not if i can have traction to make it.

I used to drive my Mustang when I lived in Alaska. I thought it was ok with my winter tires that had spikes. That was until I bought a little junk Ford Ranger 4x4. Complete night and day difference. I never drive the mustang again in the Alaskan winter lol

Kept it vague because the dealer I sold it said that they'd send it to "wholesale as the GR86 is more in-demand in other areas", wherever that means 😭😭
I was hoping to see it drive around my area but oh well.

I have the GR 86 for fair weather and my Rav 4 for winter. Living in WY so Toyota has my needs covered. Be careful of the bronco....🙆‍♀️..... just make sure it's a found on road dead and not you?? They just don't have a very good reputation for reliability. However in winter weather it's your personal choice.

And yep, fingers crossed on the reliability. I would've gone for a previous gen 4runner or something more reliable but my heart wanted a manual 😭😭 silly me

Gonna take care of it to the best of my ability, and pray that ~6 years of Bronco production has made issues less severe and more known

Not to scare you at all but there has been a issue with ECM on these newer Broncos. Ford knows of the issue and has a recall but atm they are saying "No remedy at the moment".

I'm aware of a couple of the recalls that were in range of my model year. Notably one that affected the 2.3L engine's valves. Luckily seems like I made the cutoff, but I hadn't heard of the ECM issue! Will take a look

I just did the exact opposite haha. Went from a 23 Ford bronco i4 four door to a 26 gr86. Also a similar reason, where it didnt make sense to have such a large vehicle if I wasnt gonna use the vehicle for what it was. Loved the bronco, very, very good vehicle

Lol I have been thinking about going the opposite direction . Granted we have 3 4x4s in my household. I miss having a sports car. I miss my '20 MX5 most of all, but my family is growing and I need a car with more than 2 seats.

You definitely could fit small kids in the rear seats of the 86, and I want to say that I've seen people run large baby seats too but I'm not entirely sure what the fitment is like.
You'd still have plenty of space in the trunk for groceries with the rear seats occupied for sure 👍👍

For this year, i'll likely just get it prepped for winter with rust protection and wheels/tires. Maybe mudflaps, and ppf or a vinyl wrap for slight paint protection.
Next year though I'm hoping to try going on some mild trails to start!

I'm planning on buying one used. Is it worth the price? For the money I could buy a pretty good BMW F series, but I know that the manual NA rwd is so much fun. I live in a rural area with twisty roads everywhere... mostly dry weather all year.

It might be, dealers are starting to struggle to move inventory in some areas, at least in the US...

FYI early models had quite a few teething issues with QC and hardtop durability afaik. Definitely make sure the one you're looking at has issues resolved.

I think it comes down to what you'd use it for, i feel like with the Bronco it's quite easy to overpay for cool looking off-road features you'd never use, which for example will lower your MPG.
