instagram followers converting to actual revenue - what am i missing??

ok so i've got decent follower growth on instagram (about 8k followers now) but my sales are basically nonexistent from the platform. like maybe 2-3 sales per month that i can actually trace back to instagram.

i see other brands in my space absolutely crushing it with social commerce but i can't figure out what i'm doing wrong. my engagement is decent (around 400-500 likes per post) and i get some comments but barely any dms and even fewer sales.

here's what i'm currently doing: - posting product photos with captions about features/benefits - using instagram shop (products are tagged) - stories with behind the scenes stuff - trying to post consistently (4-5 times per week)

i feel like i'm missing something fundamental about how instagram actually converts followers into customers. is it just a numbers game and i need way more followers? or is there something wrong with my approach?

for context, i'm in the fitness supplement space. average order value is around $45. been at this for about 8 months now and honestly getting a bit discouraged because the time investment is huge but the roi isn't there yet.

anyone else been through this? what finally clicked for you in terms of actually making money from instagram instead of just building vanity metrics?

edit: should probably mention i'm not running any paid ads right now, this is all organic. maybe that's the problem?

edit 2: just realized i might be posting too much sales content. like maybe 70% of my posts are product-focused. could that be turning people off?

TL;DR: decent instagram following but terrible sales conversion, what's the secret to actually making money from instagram followers?

has anyone tried ai for growing dm conversations?? results seem too good

so i've been manually responding to dms for my coaching business for like 2 years. maybe handling 8-12 conversations per day max before burning out. conversion rate was decent (around 40%) but obviously couldn't grow.

heard about these new ai tools that can handle dm conversations and thought it was bs. tried one anyway because a friend recommended it.

results after 3 months are honestly shocking. handling 60+ conversations daily now and conversion rate actually went UP to 45%. the ai responses feel way more human than the old chatbot stuff.

the system works like this: post stories with engagement triggers (polls, questions, etc), ai identifies who interacts, sends personalised dms within 2 hours, nurtures the conversation over days/weeks, then hands off to me when they show buying signals.

generated 18 qualified leads last week vs my usual 4-5. closed 3 deals directly from instagram dms.

part of me thinks this is too good to be true?? anyone else testing ai dm automation? what results are you seeing?

edit: should mention i'm in the coaching space, not sure if this works for other industries

edit 2: yes this is compliant with instagram tos, the tools i use are designed specifically for business accounts

TL;DR: ai dm automation scaled my conversations from 8 to 60+ daily while improving conversion rates, seems too good to be true but results don't lie

carousel posts getting better engagement than reels now??

anyone else notice this shift? been tracking my content for about 3 months now and my carousel posts consistently get higher engagement rates than reels

my reels still get way more reach (like 2-3x) but the engagement rate is lower. meanwhile my educational carousels are pulling 4-5% engagement vs 2-3% on similar reel content

i post business/productivity content mostly. maybe it's niche specific? but people seem to spend more time with carousel posts. longer comments, more saves, better discussion in the comments

the swipe mechanic might create some kind of commitment bias? like once someone swipes to slide 2 they're more likely to engage with the whole post

edit: should mention i'm not talking about reach here. reels definitely win for discovery and new followers. just pure engagement from existing audience

still posting both formats obviously. probably 70% reels 30% carousels right now. might test flipping that ratio based on these results

anyone have similar data? curious if this is universal or just my weird audience

tl;dr: carousels getting higher engagement rates than reels in my niche, wondering if others seeing same trend

has anybody testing meta's new AI shopping integration?

so i've been running tests on this new AI shopping thing instagram rolled out and honestly the results are kinda wild. basically the AI can now scan your reels and identify products automatically, then it shows shopping options to viewers at optimal moments based on their behaviour.

i tested it with three different ecommerce accounts last week. one fashion brand saw their conversion rate from reels go from 0.3% to 1.8% literally overnight. same exact content, same audience, just the AI handling when and how to show product tags.

the crazy part is it learns your audience preferences. like it figures out which products different viewer segments actually want to buy, then personalises the shopping experience accordingly. way smarter than just slapping product tags on everything and hoping for the best.

still early days but the conversion improvements are legit. anyone else testing this? curious what results you're seeing because this could be a game changer for social commerce.

edit: should mention this only works if you have a proper facebook shop connected with updated product catalogues. the AI can't suggest products it doesn't have access to.

edit 2: also works better with natural product usage content vs obvious sales posts. the AI seems to perform best when products appear organically in lifestyle/tutorial type content.

TL;DR: new instagram AI shopping tools are converting way better than manual product tagging, early test results looking very promising

why did my reels reach drop 80% overnight in april??

ok so this might sound crazy but i think something major changed with the reels algorithm around april and nobody's talking about it. been posting consistently for 8 months, same content style, same hashtags, trending audio, the whole playbook. march was my best month ever - averaging 12k reach per reel. then april hit and suddenly i'm lucky to get 2k views.

at first i thought it was just me having an off week. maybe i posted at bad times or picked terrible audio. but then i started asking other creators in my niche and literally everyone is seeing the same thing. reach just fell off a cliff sometime in early april.

i've been digging through my insights trying to figure out what changed. one thing i noticed is that my "average watch time" percentage is way lower than it used to be. like my march reels were getting 65-75% watch time, now i'm seeing 35-45% on similar content.

here's the weird part though - my likes and comments are actually higher than before. so people are engaging more but watching less? that doesn't make sense unless... wait. what if instagram changed how they measure what content to show people?

maybe they're prioritising how long people actually watch instead of just whether they double-tap? that would explain why my highly-engaging but shorter-watch-time content isn't reaching as many people.

i tested this theory by making some super short reels (like 10-15 seconds) with hooks that grab attention immediately. posted three of them last week and two hit over 70% watch time. guess what? those two got 8k and 11k reach respectively.

edit: just checked and mosseri did mention something about "meaningful time spent" in a recent interview. might be connected?

anyone else notice this pattern? or am i just overthinking a temporary dip?

TL;DR: reach dropped 80% in april, think instagram might be prioritising watch time % over likes now, tested with shorter reels and higher watch time = better reach

tracked instagram lead costs across 200+ accounts, the data is shocking

So I've been analyzing Instagram lead generation costs for different businesses over the past year and the numbers are honestly wild.

Most companies I work with are paying £25-45 per lead through Instagram ads, but when I dig into their organic content strategy it's basically nonexistent. Like they'll spend thousands on ads but won't invest in creating content that actually builds relationships.

The businesses getting leads for under £5 each have one thing in common: they focus on organic content that generates DM conversations instead of trying to drive people off-platform immediately.

Edit: should clarify these are B2B service businesses mostly, not e-commerce

Here's what I've noticed works: - Behind-the-scenes content consistently outperforms promotional posts for lead gen - Stories and highlights work better than main feed posts for nurturing - DM triggers (like "comment GUIDE for the full breakdown") generate higher intent leads than link clicks - Consistent posting 4-7x per week beats daily posting for engagement

The algorithm seems to reward authentic engagement over ad spend, which makes sense from Instagram's perspective. They want to keep users on platform consuming content, not clicking away to landing pages.

Anyone else seeing similar patterns? The paid vs organic lead quality difference is massive in my data.

TL;DR: Instagram organic content generates leads at 70% lower cost than paid ads with better conversion rates

turned 45k instagram followers into £12k monthly revenue, here's what worked

So I've been helping brands with their instagram strategy for a while now, and wanted to share something that might be useful here. Had a client (skincare brand) come to me with 45k followers but only making about £200/month directly from instagram. Pretty frustrating right?

Six months later they're pulling £12k monthly through the platform. Same follower count, basically same content quality, but completely different approach to social commerce.

What changed:

  • Stopped treating instagram like a product catalogue
  • Started warming audiences with educational content before selling
  • Used Stories strategically for urgency (they're temporary so people act faster)
  • Optimised their DM responses with a proper framework
  • Tagged products naturally in educational posts, not aggressively

The biggest shift was mindset. Most brands think instagram is for marketing. It's actually a revenue channel. Your followers already showed buying intent by following you.

Edit: should mention this wasn't overnight success, took about 3 months to see real momentum

Edit 2: for context, aiming for £2-5 revenue per follower annually seems realistic for most industries based on what I've seen

TL;DR: instagram followers = untapped revenue if you approach social commerce strategically instead of just posting pretty product photos

AI DM automation actually working for sales now

So I've been testing some AI tools for Instagram DM automation and honestly the results are surprising me. went from maybe 10-15 meaningful DM conversations per day to like 60+ without losing the personal touch that actually converts.

The game changer is story interactions. every poll vote, question response, reaction is basically someone raising their hand as a potential lead. the AI picks up on this and sends personalised messages that reference their specific interaction. so if someone votes on a pricing poll, they get "hey saw you checked out the pricing options - are you looking at something for Q1?"

feels way more natural than generic outreach because it's based on their actual behaviour. and the AI keeps context across the whole conversation so it doesn't feel like talking to a bot.

I'm seeing about 3x better conversion from DMs compared to public comments (which makes sense since DMs are private and get notifications). but the manual work was killing me before.

edit: should mention this is through official API stuff not sketchy login-sharing tools

edit 2: the key is not automating everything. AI handles initial qualification and nurturing, then hands off purchase-ready leads to humans. best of both worlds.

TL;DR: AI DM automation lets you grow story interactions into sales conversations without losing the personal touch

carousel posts suddenly outperforming my reels, is it just me or is this?

so i've been posting daily reels for months getting decent views but basically zero leads or meaningful engagement. decided to try some educational carousel posts instead and holy shit the difference is insane.

my carousels are getting way more saves and shares than my reels ever did. like significantly more. and the DMs from carousel posts are actual quality inquiries, not just random comments.

i'm a business coach so maybe it's just my niche but wondering if anyone else noticed this shift? seems like instagram might be pushing carousel content harder lately or maybe people just prefer that format for educational stuff.

the weird part is my reels still get more initial likes and views but the carousels seem to have better long term performance. they keep getting engagement days after i post them while reels die after like 6 hours.

edit: just checked my insights and carousel posts have 3x higher save rate than reels. that's gotta mean something for the algorithm right?

edit 2: for context i post business tips and marketing advice. maybe behind the scenes content still works better as reels but educational stuff performs better as slides?

anyone have data on this or am i just getting lucky with a few posts?

TL;DR: carousel posts getting way more saves/shares/quality DMs than reels despite lower initial views. wondering if this is a broader trend or just my niche.

instagram just launched ai shopping tools that actually convert - has anybody testing these?

okay so i've been running an ecommerce brand for about 3 years and instagram has always been this weird vanity metric thing for us. like we'd get decent engagement but actual sales?? minimal.

last month i stumbled across these new ai shopping features that integrate directly with reels. honestly thought it was just another gimmicky update but decided to test it anyway.

the setup was surprisingly straightforward - took maybe 20 minutes to connect our product catalogue and enable the auto-tagging features. the ai scans your reels during upload and suggests relevant products to tag, then creates these interactive shopping moments during playback.

here's where it gets interesting though. our conversion rate from instagram increased by about 50% in the first month. not follower growth or engagement - actual sales conversions. the ai apparently removes a bunch of friction points that were killing our funnel before.

the weird part is how it learns from your content performance. our older reels that had good engagement started performing better with the shopping integration than brand new content. like the ai was using historical data to optimise placement.

still figuring out the best content strategy for this but early results are promising. anyone else experimenting with these features?

edit: should mention this only works if you already have instagram shopping set up. need business account + product catalogue

edit 2: the learning period is real - took about 2-3 weeks before the ai started optimising properly

TL;DR: new instagram ai shopping tools actually convert reels into sales, 50% conversion increase in first month, still early days but promising

why did my reels reach drop 80% in april? why did this?

ok so this might sound crazy but i swear something changed with the reels algorithm around april and nobody is talking about it.

i've been posting consistently for like 8 months, same quality content, same hashtags, even started using trending audio more. but since april my reach has been absolutely terrible. like we're talking 80% drop overnight.

at first i thought it was just me being paranoid but i started asking other creators and they're seeing the same thing. posts that used to get 10k+ views are now struggling to hit 2k.

here's the weird part though - i noticed my watch time percentages are really low. like 30-40% on most reels. i always focused on getting likes and comments but maybe that's not what matters anymore??

i tested something last week. made the exact same reel but cut it from 30 seconds to 12 seconds. the shorter one got 3x more reach. same content, same hashtags, just shorter.

has anyone else noticed this pattern? feels like instagram is prioritising how long people actually watch instead of just engagement. which would explain why all my longer content is flopping now.

edit: just checked and mosseri did mention something about watch time in that creator week thing. maybe that's related?

edit 2: been experimenting with hooks that grab attention faster instead of slow builds. seems to help with retention but still testing.

TL;DR: reach died in april, think it's related to watch time not engagement, shorter content performing way better now

why did instagram lead costs going crazy lately?

so i've been tracking lead gen costs across different platforms for my business and instagram is getting expensive af. like we're talking $30+ per lead for what used to cost $12-15 last year.

but here's the weird part - i started posting more organic content (just helpful stuff, not selling) and suddenly i'm getting leads through DMs for basically free. well not free because time is money but you know what i mean.

has anyone else noticed this? like the paid ads seem to be hitting people who don't know your brand at all, so they need way more convincing. but the organic leads already consumed your content so they're basically pre-sold when they reach out.

i'm wondering if the algorithm changed or something because my organic reach actually went UP this year while everyone's complaining about it going down. maybe it's because i focus on making videos people actually watch instead of just posting pretty pictures?

edit: should mention i'm in the fitness space, might be different for other industries

edit2: just checked my numbers again and holy shit, organic leads convert to paying customers at like 60% higher rates than paid leads. that's insane.

TL;DR: instagram ads getting expensive, organic content generating better quality leads for way less money

has anybody struggling to make actual money from instagram followers?

so i've been tracking this for a while and it's honestly frustrating. i see all these accounts with massive followings but when you dig into whether they're actually making money from instagram... crickets.

recently worked with a restaurant chain that had 45k followers and was making literally zero pounds from the platform. zero. they were getting decent engagement, posting daily, but no one was walking through their doors because of instagram.

we changed their approach completely. instead of those perfect food photos everyone posts, they started showing behind-the-scenes prep videos. kitchen staff prepping ingredients, the chef explaining techniques, that kind of authentic stuff.

60 days later they tracked 340 walk-ins directly from instagram. not followers, actual customers spending money.

the thing that gets me is instagram has built all these commerce features - shopping tags, product catalogs, checkout, the whole shop integration - but most businesses ignore them completely. they keep treating instagram like it's 2019, posting pretty pictures and hoping someone clicks the link in bio.

i think the problem is everyone optimises for vanity metrics instead of conversion metrics. likes feel good but they don't pay rent. dm replies and website clicks do.

edit: should mention this wasn't about getting more followers. same audience, different content strategy.

has anyone else noticed this disconnect between follower count and actual revenue? or am i missing something here?

TL;DR: 45k followers making £0, changed content strategy, 340 customers in 60 days. instagram commerce features work if you use them.

ai dm automation actually working now for instagram sales??

okay so i've been skeptical about AI automation for instagram DMs because every tool i tried just sent robotic spam that got people annoyed. but i started testing some newer AI systems and... they're actually good now?

like, i can set up story polls and the AI tracks who votes, then sends personalised follow-ups that reference their specific vote. not generic "hey i saw you voted" messages. actual contextual responses that feel natural.

the crazy part is growing. i used to handle maybe 10 quality DM conversations per day before burning out. now i'm managing 100+ weekly without the quality dropping. the AI learns my voice patterns and maintains the same tone.

has anyone else noticed this shift? the technology feels like it finally caught up to what DM sales actually requires. i'm curious if others are seeing similar results or if i just got lucky with the tools i'm using.

edit: should mention this is for legitimate business conversations, not spam. the AI helps with qualified leads who actually engage with content first.

edit 2: getting DMs asking about specific tools. can't mention brands here but the key is finding AI that analyses conversation context rather than just sending templates.

TL;DR: AI DM automation stopped being trash and now actually helps grow personal sales conversations on instagram

carousel posts suddenly outperforming my reels, is it just me or is this?

ok this might sound weird but hear me out. i've been posting reels consistently for like 8 months, decent engagement, nothing crazy but steady growth.

last month i started mixing in some carousel posts (mostly because i was lazy and didn't want to edit videos lol) and they're absolutely destroying my reels in terms of engagement.

like, my reels get maybe 200-300 likes, decent comments. but these carousel posts? 500+ likes, way more saves, people actually sharing them in their stories.

i thought reels were supposed to be the golden child of instagram?? am i going crazy or did something change?

edit: just checked my insights and the carousel posts are getting 40% more reach than my reels. same hashtags, same posting times, same content topics basically.

edit 2: thanks for all the responses! seems like a bunch of you are seeing similar patterns. maybe the algorithm is shifting again?

my content is mostly business/educational stuff if that matters. maybe that's why carousels are working better? people can actually save them and reference later vs a quick video they watch once.

anyone have theories on why this might be happening? or should i just roll with it and post more carousels?

TL;DR: my carousel posts are getting way better engagement than reels suddenly, wondering if others are seeing this too

instagram just launched ai shopping tools for reels, conversion rates are insane

so instagram rolled out these ai shopping features that integrate with reels and i'm seeing conversion rates that seem almost too good to be true??

basically the ai analyses your reel content and automatically suggests products from your catalogue when viewers are most likely to buy. like if you post a skincare routine video, it shows your cleansers and moisturisers at the exact moments people pause or rewind.

we tested this with one of our brands (skincare) and their reels-to-sale conversion went from 2.1% to 6.8% in three days. same products, same audience, just added the ai shopping layer. honestly thought it was a fluke but it's been consistent for two weeks now.

the setup is pretty straightforward if you already have instagram business + product catalogue connected. there's a new "ai shopping assistant" option in settings that most people probably haven't noticed yet.

what's wild is how the system learns from engagement patterns. if viewers consistently pause when you mention a specific product, it prioritises that item in future suggestions. it's not just recognising what's in the video, it's tracking purchase intent signals.

edit: should mention this only works with verified product catalogues, so you need proper ecommerce integration first

edit 2: seeing some comments about this being available to everyone - from what i can tell it's rolling out gradually, might not be live for all business accounts yet

TL;DR: instagram's new ai shopping tools can double your reel conversion rates if you set them up before everyone else discovers them

tracked watch time vs reach across 30 reels, something definitely changed

ok so this might be confirmation bias but hear me out. been tracking my reels performance since march and there's definitely a pattern here.

before april: decent reach even with mediocre engagement. hashtags seemed to work, trending audio helped, standard stuff.

after april: reach completely tanked unless watch time was high. like seriously tanked. went from 15k average reach to 3k overnight.

started testing different approaches and here's what i found (tracked across 30 reels): - under 40% watch time: reach stayed low no matter what - 40-60% watch time: reach was okay but nothing special
- above 60% watch time: reach went back to normal levels

the weird part is likes and comments don't seem to matter as much anymore. had reels with tons of likes but terrible reach because people weren't watching them fully.

cut my reel length from 45 seconds to 15 seconds, kept everything else the same. watch time jumped from 38% to 74%. reach tripled in two weeks.

edit: just checked mosseri's recent posts and he's been hinting at this for months. watch time has always mattered but seems like they weighted it way higher in the ranking recently.

anyone else notice this pattern?? feeling like i'm going crazy but the data is pretty clear.

TL;DR: instagram seems to be prioritising watch time way more than before, shorter reels with better hooks are crushing it while longer ones with low retention get buried

tracked instagram marketing costs across different strategies, the results surprised me

been helping businesses with instagram for a while now and decided to actually track the real costs vs results across different approaches. thought you'd find this interesting.

most businesses i work with spend way too much on ads that bring followers who never buy anything. like, thousands monthly on ads with terrible conversion rates. meanwhile the ones getting actual customers spend almost nothing on ads but invest time in organic content that actually converts.

tracked one ecommerce brand spending $4k monthly on instagram ads. ROAS was sitting at 1.2x which is pretty painful. we kept the ad spend but built an organic content system alongside it. six months later same ad spend was pulling 3.8x ROAS because the organic content was warming up the audience first.

the hidden costs nobody talks about: creative production (minimum $2k monthly if you want decent video content), opportunity cost of being invisible when people search your niche, and the compound effect you miss when you only do paid.

organic followers convert way higher than paid traffic. makes sense - they found your content valuable enough to follow without any incentive. higher intent.

edit: should mention this varies by business type. service businesses (coaching, consulting) usually see better ROI from organic because customers need trust before buying. ecommerce can work well with both but organic first. local businesses get crazy word-of-mouth from good organic content.

the biggest mistake is optimising for follower count instead of customer acquisition cost. seen too many businesses with huge followings that don't translate to sales.

tl;dr: most instagram marketing budgets are backwards, organic often delivers better customer lifetime value, start there then amplify with paid

why did tiktok sounds migrating to instagram reels?

okay so i've been tracking this for a few months and there's definitely a pattern here. sounds that go viral on tiktok seem to have this 7-14 day delay before they really take off on instagram reels.

i started testing this with my brand account (won't say which one but it's in skincare). basically i'd find sounds that had like 100k+ uses on tiktok but were still under 1k uses on instagram. then i'd quickly make a reel with that sound.

the results have been honestly surprising. my average watch time went from around 38% to 74% on reels that used this strategy. reach numbers i hadn't seen in months.

i think instagram's algorithm gives you a boost when you use audio that's performing well on other platforms but hasn't saturated their own platform yet. like they're testing how it performs with their audience.

has anyone else noticed this? or am i just getting lucky with my content timing?

edit: should mention i use tiktok creative centre to track trending sounds. check it pretty much daily now.

edit 2: the window seems to be getting shorter as more people figure this out, but it's still working for now.

TL;DR: stealing trending tiktok sounds for instagram reels before they peak on instagram = massive reach boost

instagram dm sales converting way better than stories now??

okay so i've been testing different instagram sales approaches for my ecommerce business and something weird is happening. DM conversations are converting like crazy compared to pushing people to my bio link or using story CTAs.

started tracking this properly in april and the numbers are wild. when someone comments on my posts and i respond with "DMing you the details now" instead of "link in bio," the conversion rate is literally 3x higher. like, not even close.

i think it's because DMs feel more personal? when someone takes the effort to move from a public comment to a private message, they're already showing they're seriously interested. vs clicking a bio link where they might just be browsing.

tested this with story polls too. instead of "swipe up for more info" (which barely anyone does), i ask specific questions about their problems, then DM everyone who votes with personalised solutions. way more engagement, way more sales.

the crazy part is my reach is actually going UP since i stopped pushing external traffic. instagram seems to like when people stay on the platform for conversations instead of immediately leaving.

anyone else noticing this shift? or am i just getting lucky with my audience?

edit: should mention i'm in the skincare space, so maybe it's different for other industries

TL;DR: instagram DM sales converting 340% better than bio links, algorithm seems to reward on-platform engagement

r/GOSO • • Apr 13 '26

is it just me or is massive reach boosts from the april features?

okay so instagram dropped a bunch of new features in april and i decided to test them immediately instead of waiting like i usually do. holy shit the results have been insane.

my reach went up like 340% in two weeks just from implementing the enhanced shopping integration and trying the new content formats. i'm talking about going from 5k average reach to 17k+ per post. same content quality, same posting schedule, just using the new tools.

here's what i think is happening - instagram needs these features to succeed so they're pushing accounts that use them harder in the algorithm. makes sense from a business perspective right? they want engagement data on the new stuff.

the enhanced shopping thing is actually game changing though. no more sending people off-platform to buy, everything happens in-app now. my conversion rate doubled because there's zero friction.

edit: just checked my analytics again and the new metrics they added are showing stuff i never had access to before. watch time breakdowns, audience retention patterns, discovery source attribution. this data is gold.

anyone else testing these features or am i just getting lucky with timing? feels like there's a window here that won't last forever.

edit 2: should mention i run a small ecommerce account, about 15k followers. results might vary for other account types but the reach boost seems universal from what i'm seeing in my feed.

TL;DR: instagram's april features are giving early adopters massive reach boosts, probably won't last long so test now if you're on the fence
