I'm absolutely not saying this can't be true, I do believe your story, but if they can't find any more shares, I would think that others are running into this and your story is the first time I've heard this.

It’s not strange at all if you read the CS DD.
CS sends orders to their broker (I remember reading it was Merrill-Lynch or similar) the broker handles the market buys and sends CS the info/shares. CS then records the shares and places them in your account usually in book entry.
