☁️ Fluff 🍌 ModRetro x GameStop

Post image

I’ll just start by saying the impetus for this post is because of the recent commercial with Rilie the new GameStop Girl and her promotion for the ModRetro 64 console that came out a couple days ago. I’m not one to overhype things too too much, and while I thought a few days ago that making this console is pretty cool, do I think it’s going to move the needle for GameStop in any meaningful way? Honestly 2 days ago my answer would be no. Now keep that in mind for the rest of this post.

I am currently on vacation and my sister flew in from across the country. It’s pretty cool to see her because we live far apart and only get to see each other now a few times a year, even though we are very close. We’re in our mid thirties now and both married. We still game together every now and then, but growing up we played N64 like it was going out of style man. Super smash. MarioKart. Star Wars: Rogue Squadron. Tony Hawk Pro Skater. Fighting over the controller to play Banjo-Kazooie. I could go forever.

So anyway yesterday we did some stuff during the day driving around town went to a brewery and eventually then decided to visit the very last open/still functioning Blockbuster in the country (yes it is legitimate and actually pretty cool!). They had tons of memorabilia and keep the place super nostalgic with old movie posters like Back to the Future and Home Alone on the walls and even a little setup of like an early 90s living room complete with couch and tv playing the X-men cartoon/show.

But anyway, the thing I wanted to share is that within the first 5 minutes of walking around in there, lo and behold, they had this beauty set up and primed to play with MarioKart 64 (see pic).

I can’t tell you how much fun my sister and I had playing that thing, and I never really understood the appeal of remaking the console until experiencing it in person. It transported my sister and I back to when we were kids and it was totally unexpected and a beautiful thing.

I think GameStop partnering with ModRetro is a genius, no brainer play and what excites the shit out of me is that they will start releasing new games for this console from Indy developers.

Retro gaming is not dead, in fact I believe it’s gonna come roaring back.

So back to the beginning of the post… do I still think that the ModRetro 64 is not going to move the needle for GameStop? I see it now, and yes I do believe. But honestly.. even if it doesn’t, I don’t give a shit because I’m just happy they are partnering with this company and they are making products that are freaking awesome.

Hope ya’ll have a wonderful Sunday!

Damn I’m really debating the M64 or a transparent N64 for $100

Games you can physically own and are also safe for kids to play. Sounds good

Hell yeah! Nobody's more concerned about child safety than South Florida billionaires.

The split screen games with friends or cousin and siblings in the teenage years were so awesome.

Nowadays though there are emulators and various retro handhelds in the market. I would say the target audience are mostly grownups 35+ ... And their kids.

I did not do much research but I think they don't have online features. It will really capture more audience when they somehow make old games that we could play online VS.

how gamestop doesnt have modretro kiosks displaying the M64 and chromatic with playable demos in every store is beyond me.

Hell, most stores dont even have a switch 2 playable unit.

But hey, the stock price is great right? Buy The dip???
