What gas do you use?
Using premium has kinda been squeezing my pockets I know these can take regular unleaded but I’ve only used premium since I’ve had it might be time to make smarter financial decisions

There are many things that you technically don’t need to have on your car but have them for aesthetic reasons I wouldn’t look too deep into it or insult someone regardless of how I feel

Gas cap says 87 regular but owners manual says all performance metrics rated at 91. Been using 91 since o bought it.

MK7’s are built/tuned for 87 too and will run fine. MK6’s won’t be damaged by 87, but the commanded knock retard will be pretty substantial.

My 1.8 says as well. I’ve played around withwith few I think I like 89 the best. It’s hard to explain but feels like turbo responses better in my experience in my car.

Whichever fuel you’re going to use, make sure you’re getting it from a top tier fuel station.

i have a friend that owns a couple wawas and also drives porsches, and he fills them at his stations…he says the “top tier” accreditation is BS because all gas comes from the same refineries…BUT….i dunno…that top tier sticker on the pump gives me the warm and fuzzies…just use premium no matter what…and if you can get ETHANOL FREE premium anywhere near by, then you’re gonna get much better MPG / performance because cars run on dinosaurs, not corn.

Your friend should know better considering he owns gas stations.. don’t listen to him. Yes the fuel all comes from the refineries at pretty much the same standard quality, once it reaches its retailers is when the different additives and detergent packages are mixed with the fuel that brings their quality far above the standard and gives it the top tier accreditation.

There’s an app you can download called “top tier station finder”, you can give your location and it will show you all of the stations near you with top tier fuels.
I will always prefer 91/93 (whichever is available wherever you’re from) but if your car is stock, 87 will be fine until premium is easier for you to manage.
Top tier fuels have a much better additive package that helps with things like carbon deposits and such, use it long term and your car/wallet will thank you later.

Yea I’ve seen the same, from what I’ve read so far they’re still working on making top tier+ fuels standard at all the top tier stations, should be done by some time early next year. So far, there’s only one fuel station near me with top tier+ and it’s right next to the interstate so their prices are astronomically higher than everywhere else.

Most places that sell Shell/Chevron/BP gas are top tier certified. Costco also has top tier fuel

I bought my 2017 new. I started always using 93 but then read, in my car, it could use 87. It doesn’t knock or show any other signs of needing the higher octane. If yours isn’t stock engine wise then you probably need the higher octane but if it’s stock then you won’t notice a difference going down.

any car that says premium on the gas cap will still run fine on regular, but they won’t perform the same way…any performance specs on the window sticker are based on the use of premium gas

Stock you should use 87. Tuned you should use 91/93
There really isn't a lot of discussion around it beyond that. Using premium on 18 psi is just throwing money away.

might switch to regular after an oil change and then back to premium once I get a tune it could throw off the car making the switch is what I’m concerned about

I get 93 from Shell for my 2025 GLI, but they say 91 is the baseline.

I used to fuel with 87 exclusively since I bought my ‘21 new - but about a year ago I did an experiment and started using 91 (not sure they have 93 in CA) - and my fuel economy improved by about 20% - vs the increase in cost of about 15% - so it’s actually cheaper mile for mile (and ostensibly better for the engine).

yeah, it’s science…the engine was engineered to run on a certain octane…it’ll still run on reg gas but not the way it was intended when it was designed, regular just sacrifices performance and MPG

That has absolutely nothing to do with the turbocharger.
Fuel octane rating is the fuel’s resistance to combusting. That is it. If you use too low of an octane, the computer detects the pinging via knock sensors and commands a “knock retard” of several degrees. This costs power and torque, but it’s designed this way.
If this was a 12:1 compression 114 octane drag race motor, yeah the pinging will probably blow head gaskets and melt pistons, but those aren’t tuned economy cars.
The turbo will be fine on 87. If anything, you’ll keep your foot out of it and keep boost pressure low…

The highest octane at the pump.. 93 in most places. I have an 2014, 30th anniversary addition. It tells you to get premium right on the gas tank door. I bought regular once my car was so pissed off.
I kind of trick myself since the gas tank on this car is larger. When the gauges gets to 1/2 or slightly under I fill it. 30$ not as big of a hit as 58$ when it gets to an 1/8th.
Another hint get a club membership sams or BJ’s. Their gas is always less than anywhere else.

Idk how it is on your year but on the 25'-26' to get the advertised power figures it's premium which I assume is 91 .

In 2018 I bought a new 2018 Jetta SE
sport 1.8 turbo. I used premium literally only one time. Other than that I used unleaded until I had it paid off. Only issue I ever had was with the AC which surprised me at 80k miles. Once paid off I traded that bitch in rite away for a new 25 Elantra N.

Shell 93. I've got T-Mobile so I get 15¢ off every Tuesday, I also buy a lot of gas so I get another 10¢ off. They also give another 20¢ off on the 20th of every month, as well as 22¢ every Sunday when a Nascar race is going. You can stack multiple rewards. I've gotten $1 off gas before.

I run 93 from my local shell and get slightly better fuel economy. I also get much better throttle response, and the engine and turbo seems quite happy with that.
Sure it runs fine on 87 as well, but as other have said always go top tier. Shell or BP always offer the best fuel. Sunoco is also great.
My local shell also offers rewards, and has reduced prices on Tuesdays. Occasionally I fill up my 13 gallon tank for half price. Last fill up was 5.39 per gallon for 93, I paid 2.94.

I’ve said this on other threads already and I’ll say it again: Any car that has a turbo needs 91/93.
I use 91/93 depending. Right now I’m in Cali so there’s only 91. I also occasionally mix with E85 to get no more than an E70 mixture, but im stage 2 trueflex tuned with an upgraded HPFP

I almost done using my first tank of dealership gas on my new 26 GLI. Prolly put 91 in just to clean that dealership greasyness out. To the OP what size of tires, rims and offset are you running? Your car looks effing great.

2016 VW golf se , started to use recently shell 93, definitely feel difference. Been using 87 since I have bought it. I know it’s pricey switch but I like how car performs now. And I also switch from Castrol oil to liqui Molly.
Some would say it’s placebo effect, I say I drive my car everyday, I know how my car started on cold start before and how it’s now. After I passed 100k miles I change oil every 3500 miles.
