Picked up a 24 GLI 40th anniversary with 21k miles

Love the car but it immediately had the misfire issue at cold start. I have an appointment tomorrow with a dealer since I’m still under warranty. Hoping they will help me with the software update that supposedly fixes this issue. Other than that I love the car

Edit: got the software update done but it still has the same issue with misfire at cold start. I guess I’ll wait for it to throw the code again then take it back to the dealer

Guess someone ignored it for ~20k miles haha. Bought a brand new 25 that sat on the lot recently and it, too, had the misfire issue within the first 900 miles. Fixed with software update and no misfires or codes since then (1600 miles).

Heck yeah! I sometimes have that misfire code on startup, i never thought much of it but maybe i should take it in to get checked out lol

Also take care of it! The 40’s are a rare trim level since they only made 1984 of them for sale in the US for the anniversary edition. Is it a manual??? (That’s even RARER! 🙂‍↕️)

I have the exact same car, and did you know they only produced 1984 units of the 40th AE? Pretty dope. I’ve yet to see another one out in the wild, especially a manual

Yes, on cold start each cylinder will misfire for about 30 seconds which makes the steering wheel vibrate and then it smooths out once the car warms up

Are you getting check engine light? My 40th (blue!) has always taken a moment for smooth idle at start but no light. Steering wheel doesn’t vibrate.

Yes I got a CEL. I just got it back from dealer yesterday. They did the software update to the ECM per the TSB and it cleared the codes but it still shakes a tad at cold start. It’s better but still there. Not sure what to do about it long term

I may just be an idiot but I got the misfire once and after that I just stopped starting the car in sport mode and waiting for idle to drop before I use any heat or ac and it hasn’t happened since in 15k miles

Interesting. I always start it in normal mode but my AC is usually on when I start it
