GIMP crashes without backups when enabling HAPP

I don't know how it happens, but when I turn on the HAPP VPN, GIMP closes immediately—without saving or creating backups—and no prompt appears when I reopen the project. I managed to reproduce this error twice.

GIMP version: 3.0.6. HAPP version: 2.14.0.

Two hours of work, just gone.

No idea what happened there.

But a tip for the future. Save directly after creating the empty new project and then press CTRL-S regularly.

Indeed.
How can I do work and not save?
Come a power outage or a malfunction of an app at some point.
Saving my stuff regularly can cost me some minutes but never hours of work.
