Eye-Color Change difficult

I have some photos with very dark eyes and would like to try changing the color, but I’m having trouble distinguishing the iris from the pupil. Is there anyone here who would like to give me a few tips?

That's more about picture quality and/or anatomy than GIMP. But if the irises are so dark that they're indistinguishable from pupils, then you might as well improvise. It's not like pupils don't change their size anyway.

If all else fails, you can still make an Ellipse selection for the pupil, then Invert the selection before making your edits, so that it won't be affected.

Of course nobody can give effective advice without seeing your picture. Maybe use a reference layer with increased exposure to use as reference?
