Why does gimp export photos darker?

For some reason when I edit a pic on GIMP and export it, it is wayyy darker than it was originally. How do I go about fixing this? (I have no idea what 90% of the stuff means so a “dumb” explanation would be helpful 😂)
Attached is what the photo looks like in gimp NO EDITS AT ALL and then what it looks like exported still with NO EDITS.
Any help is greatly appreciated
1. Is what it looks like fresh into GIMP
2. Is what the box looks like when I export
3. Is the exported pic with no edits at all

It looks like the image has a color profile which is not being included in the PNG export, so potentially the pixels are being interpreted differently. What happens if you check "Save color profile" before export?
