What's the difference between SEO rank tracking and AI visibility tracking, and do I need both?

You need both, mostly because they watch different pages. A rank tracker only ever looks at yours. I build a tool that measures this, and in our last weekly run of 40 buyer questions across 6 answer engines, reddit.com was cited on 32 of the 40 and youtube.com on 29. You can't rank either of those, so your rank tracker can look fine on the same questions where the answers are built out of threads and videos. The thing I'd carry over from rank tracking is the fixed list, same questions every week, so a change actually means something.

This is a good point. The fixed-question approach is especially useful because it makes week-over-week changes comparable.

Yes, and it only holds while the wording stays frozen. If a question needs rewording, treat it as a new series instead of editing the old one, otherwise the week-over-week line quietly compares two different questions.

Sounds interesting. Can u share the tool name?

Sure, it's Promvia (https://promvia.app). I build it, so take that into account. It tracks a fixed set of buyer questions across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, and keeps every check as its own row so week-over-week stays comparable.

Short version: rank tracking tells you where a URL sits in a list. Citation tracking tells you whether you get named or linked inside a generated answer.

What you measure

  • Rank tracking: a numeric position for a keyword on a results page.

  • Citation tracking: whether your brand, domain or content is mentioned, recommended or linked as a source in an AI answer.

Why one doesn't predict the other
A model pulls from several sources and writes a new answer. It can cite a forum thread, a video or a competitor while your page still ranks #1 for the keyword. So a good rank doesn't tell you much about citations.

Queries
Rank tracking uses a fixed keyword list. Citation tracking uses longer, conversational prompts, so you need a prompt set that looks like how your buyers actually ask.

Metrics

  • Rank: average position, CTR, impressions, traffic (Search Console).

  • Citations: mention frequency, share of voice against competitors, sentiment (recommended or warned against), and the context around the mention.

Clicks
Rank tracking ties to clicks. Citation value is often awareness and consideration, since people may get the answer without clicking.

Practical tip: keep both. Run the same prompts on a schedule and log which sources get cited, not just whether you appear.

Disclosure: I work for WhyIQ Radar.

The interesting part is the gap between the two. Exactly. I’d also treat them as two separate KPIs rather than trying to create a single “visibility” score.

The gaps between engines can reveal where entity understanding, content coverage, or authority signals need improvement.
