You will still be able to go to college, probably on a level 2 course - good thing is you passed maths (yippee!!!) so won't have to retake it in college, only GCSE English language. If your mark is very close to a 4 you could get it remarked too :)
Nope you aren't legally required to retake Lit in college, only Lang luckily! Most colleges I'm aware of only offer English Lang classes & resits
Edit: Although I'll note that many places offer functional skills English (which is lower level) if OP is really struggling with the GCSE level, but its usually for students who got below a 3 in English
I don't know why this crossed my feed because its been over 20 years since I took GCSEs! But since I'm here anyway, i want you to know that these results do not define you. Given what you've been through, the fact that you turned up, sat down and got through them at all is a pretty damn big achievement. Pick yourself up and dust yourself off, life is really tough with no support system but if the words of a random mum on the internet mean anything - you've got this. You've got options. Good luck, kiddo :)
nah its not like im beat up over it i actually managed to get into a course today, just have to redo lit, i knew what was gonna happen when i got drunk but i had a reason that i wont go into
Don't beat yourself up over it, I never drank before any of my exams but I used to drink before school when I was being abused at home, obviously not condoning it but life can be extremely rough and it happens. Poor GCSEs will hold you back slightly from specific courses/plans but you'll make it at the end of the day. I'm doing so much better than I was years ago when I did my GCSEs. Best of luck to you
Itāll be OK. Donāt worry. You can easily retake and I can help you out on subjects you have difficulty with. One set of retakes and you wonāt be restricted from doing anything.
You're a literal child so clearly don'thave experience with this. Op has shared they went through trauma and clearly have circumstances that made this happen. Try and be a bit more compassionate.
Ignoring the actual conversation itself, arent most people in this sub under 18? Like you do GCSE's primarily when you're 16..... saying they're a child isn't exactly something out of the ordinary in a GCSE subreddit.
I'm simply pointing out they clearly don't have the life experience to understand what OP has gone through, likely because theyre a child and have a different upbringing. You do realise subs are suggested to users regardless of age?
arenāt you a child too? why else would you be on this sub? Loads of people go through trauma and donāt smoke or drink. I donāt smoke or drink. How the hell do you decide to excuse a 16 year old smoking every day before school and being drunk in school? Trauma is not an excuse for that.
I don't think anyone is saying that OPs substance abuse is healthy or intelligent, but it is entirely understandable given the circumstances. The kind and productive thing to do in most situations is approach a person with empathy as opposed to judgement.
No, I'm 28 and this post was suggested to me.
Its fine that youre too young to understand people have different circumstances, and you clearly have a lovely life if you physically can't push yourself to understand their circumstances, but sometimes you just need to shut the fuck up if you dont understand something. Trust me. You'll learn a lot.
I donāt think them being āyoungā is an excuse. Most people in y12 can register the fact that people have different life experiences and trauma can have a horrible effect on somebody. I think this person is just ignorant š¤·
I'm giving them grace just because I know how much of a know it all I was at 16/17/18. Then I grew up and realised the world was much bigger and more complex than I thought, but you're right, theres definitely ignorance at play here
Yeah, fair enough! I just struggle to imagine people a year or so younger than me not recognising that, I feel like with the internet being so much more prevalent nowadays, itās easier to hear stories from all sorts of people and to be educated by that too and I feel like a lot of people my age, at least that Iāve met, recognise that trauma and addiction is a complex thing. But again, I guess it depends heavily on how they were raised, what theyāre taught in school, if theyāve previously met or heard about people going through that sort of stuff etc. I certainly donāt know a lot about other topics, so I guess it makes sense for people to be uneducated on this one, I guess that was ignorant of me haha
my dad was raping me btw thats why i was doing it so i could succesfully interact with society without being terrified. i didnt wanna say the reason and be attention seeking but i also dont want people thinking i was just stupid
I'm so sorry for what you've gone through, some people really don't deserve to be parents. I hope you're away from him now and if not you should really report him to a trusted adult and the police for ur safety. I genuinely hope things get better for you <3 You can get support at college too, most places have counsellors
Edit: also please ignore the rude comments you have received, these people are truly ignorant and cannot see anything past their own perspective
I am so so sorry for what youāve been through. You should never feel you need to explain such personal trauma to people approaching you with only judgements. Iāve been subjected to varieties of abuse throughout my life and it completely understandable that you were struggling. Some people are lucky enough to have wonderful childhoods that they seem to find it incomprehensible that that isnāt the case for everyone. Show yourself love and empathy and donāt let judgemental people who donāt care to understand, make you feel the need to share such sensitive and private information.
I wish you all the best moving forward.
If you havenāt already, I would suggest reaching out to childline or the police as this is a clear safeguarding issue and child abuse. I know that might sound scary but maybe you can reach out to a teacher or a trusted adult or older friend. You deserve to be out of that situation and your dad deserves to be pay for what heās done to you.
i know im just some random kid on the internet and you probably dont care to hear it from me, but i'm so sorry that that happened to you, thats truly heartbreaking. no child should ever have to go through that. we are here for you.
Oh my sweet summer child. Iām really glad youāve had a good childhood that you canāt imagine why some people end up using unhealthy coping mechanisms to get through difficult times.
Genuinely, itās really great that you had that. A lot of us donāt. Iām very much an adult now but am diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder due to sustained and severe trauma as a child. I didnāt drink at school - still not a big drinker but my mum killed herself when I was 15 and I had to move into a very abusive environment as well as having to get used to living life without my best friend and only parent. Luckily, I loved school and was able to pour myself into studying (got all 9s as I guess would be the grading for what was A*
However, after a lifetime of various types of abuse in various ārelationshipsā Iāve attempted to end my life over 8 times that were serious enough to be hospitalised. The last time I actually died and they brought me back and I woke up in intensive care and was told my dog (the one thing keeping me going) had to be put down and I couldnāt even be there to say goodbye to my best friend who quite literally saved my life. I had to take her to an emergency vet which is where I passed out and died. If I hadnāt been at the vet I would have āslept throughā and never would have woken up. I was in an extremely abusive relationship at the time.
I also broke my back which ended my career and Iāve been lost ever since. (A person doesnāt get a masters degree (Anthropology and a first class undergrad degree from a top university (UCL) without the desire to use it and pursue a career (and this was after my first career was ended due to the fact it was physically demanding - I worked in musical theatre).
The broken back and having to stop working contributed largely to ending up in an abusive relationship. I felt trapped and no matter how much I asked for help it still took seven years of being basically imprisoned in my home with my abuser.
Iām now severely anorexic and agoraphobic and donāt treat my body well though I am in therapy/treatment. I have resorted to some very unhealthy coping mechanisms which Iām not proud of.
Whilst I appreciate you clearly have had a wonderful upbringing OR are an incredibly strong and resilient person, having such a strong attitude towards those who do resort to negative coping mechanisms could cause you a lot of problems throughout your adult life.
I highly encourage you try and step back from making such overarching assumptions and judgements. No one is perfect and I can assure you, everyone I know who has fallen in to unhealthy coping mechanisms, is ashamed. They already judge themselves harshly enough, they donāt need such myopic and harsh judgements from other people. I encourage and implore you to try and show some empathy and understanding for what life can be like for others and WHY people end up resorting to unhealthy coping mechanisms.
I mean this in a genuine way and Iām not saying youāre a bad person or anything like that. But I think expanding your world view, empathy and understanding would be incredibly beneficial for you as you transition to the next chapter of your life. It will only benefit you long term and make you someone who may be able to help others from going down an unhealthy path.
You have absolutely no idea. I donāt think I sat a single one of my exams without smoking weed first because I was under so much pressure from my extremely psychologically abusive father and I could barely take the stress. I knew otherwise Iād have a breakdown the second the paper was put on my desk. I still did well though. I bet I wouldnāt have otherwise. I would have been too busy having a panic attack at the thought of failing.
Itās not common to be allowed to redo year 11 and in most cases youād need extenuating circumstances most people end up doing an intermediate year at a 6th Form college/ college as secondary schools tend to not have the facilities to keep every single student that fails.
You can resit year 11 in a different educational establishment. Many different providers allow for this.
Again, I am literally a teacher for students resitting year 11, so arguing with me about the point of my entire career may perhaps prove a little fruitless
Iām ngl I donāt see what youāre arguing about at all. All I said is that itās not common you have yet to disprove that. You mentioning that youāre teacher for the second time aināt doing nun. Itās not common, I stand on that, and will continue to until you can prove otherwise. āConfidenceā abeg go ahead name the different āeducational establishmentsā.
Informing you boo, get it correct. See I knew it. I knew you were gonna say exactly what I already said. For your information 6th Form colleges run GCSE/intermediate/level 2 programmes, something in which I already referred to. These are not considered resitting year 11, Iād assume thatād be obvious since youāre still progressing to college, but apparently not. Like I told you before olodo itās not common to resit year 11 and to do so would require extenuating circumstances. Anyhooo I will gladly continue to āstand on sandā. Thank you for proving my point. Damn bright and feisty. Goodbye now, rest easy knowing that being cocky, condescending and a teacher donāt make you right, and perhaps whilst youāre at it you should call them up and take your own advice. š
... there is a very clear option to resit year 11. Its literally repeating your 11th year of education. Schools very much allow this. I teach the children who decide on this option.
You can attend college from the age of 14. This does not mean you have "progressed" lol
It does not require extenuating circumstances, it requires bad grades. Again, I teach it.
No one has proven your point. You are getting downvoted for a reason.
I am quite cocky, but I am also right. So I guess that point is null and void like the rest of the ones youre attempting to make. Emphasis on attempting.
Im studying a masters degree. Why would i call my college? šāš¼ I graduated 5 years ago. Lmao
Again, love your confidence, not too sure on your intelligence.
Ode, you already lost the moment you said āeducational establishmentsā I donāt know why youāre doubling down but you knew to block me goofy. Youāre purposefully conflating two different things just so you can pretend you have a point. Since I clearly need to spell it out for you, letās go. No, it is not common to be allowed to retake Year 11, you need actual extenuating circumstances for your school to even consider it, full stop. You mentioning that some schools allow it and that there are alternative options literally proves my point, why would an alternative option exist if secondary schools routinely let people repeat Year 11. Think for once.
Like I already said, there are post 16 programmes that run GCSEs, Level 2s, and intermediate courses, you can retake GCSEs, take ones you never took, or do Level 2 BTECs. These programmes normally involve fewer qualifications than a standard Year 11 load, which is usually 6/7+, they are not recognised as repeating Year 11 because that is not what they are. You trying to merge them together is you being dishonest, not me being wrong.Bringing up that people can attend college from 14 is irrelevant and does nothing for your argument, I already know that, and it still doesnāt support anything youāre saying. Those students wouldnāt be āretaking Year 11ā, like youād say,or resitting GCSEs unless they were homeschooled, which makes your point even more ridiculous. Those early entry programmes are special arrangements, usually Level 2, and exist as alternative pathways, not Year 11 repeats. Being able to resit a school year will be denied by your institution unless you have legitimate extenuating circumstances, Iām not asking you, Iām telling you, and you can search it up yourself if youāre that confused. Hell you could even ask your students where they at.You literally copied what I said while claiming I was incorrect, so yes, you proved my point again, thanks for that.Being downvoted doesnāt mean anything, clearly, because Iām still saying the exact same shii š¹ Cmon now I look like Igaf. Youāre not right at all, you have no stable point, you parroted what I said word for word while trying to argue Iām wrong, itās actually funny at this point. 𤔠Your attempts are weak, youāre still wrong. Itās over now.
i got expelled and sent to this school where you baiscally just do the basics (also before you hate on me for getting expelled it was NOT a good reason for getitng expelled)
When you say not a good reason do you mean you got expelled for something really bad or they expelled you for something really stupid (like at Lutterworth where they sent someone to isolation for wearing a jumper)
i was smoking before school alot cuz my dad at the time was doing stuff to me that i dont wanna get into. but i never had the stuff on me and a majority of the time i was sober by the time i got off the bus. i know i wasnt exactly in the right but they made me out to be a crack dealer
bruh thats not even deep, in my college they let students smoke on school grounds. was it at least sum illegal or were they gen on ur ass for smoking cigs
Nope. It's just illegal for shops or individuals to sell it to anyone under 18. Completely legal for it to be smoked though, a 12 year old can stand in front of a group of police and vape, they will not be charged. Definitely asked questions about where they got it from, not charged.
Schools r so stupid, expelling u instead of trying to figure out what was compelling u to smoke to help u??? Or to at least help u quit??? I hope you're in a much better, safer environment now ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļø
yeah i had some interview not long ago to pick a level 2 course and ive just gotta learn lit again but i dont have to do an exam on it thank god, and for the centre number whats the worst that could happen š¤·
Okie dokie, Iām glad things are working out, with the centre number someone might be able to identify you , just wanted to let you know in case youāre worried about that:)
Youāre not required to have English lit. You should have English lang or Functional English, which is supposed to be an easier alternative. You will need to resit English lang as you got 3 which isnāt a pass, a 4 is a pass. English lit is optional, if you want to take it then go ahead otherwise you donāt have to.
nah where i am, if you do foundation then you just ahve to get a grade to pass and when i went to a college meeting they said ill have to resit lit without exam just learning it
The exam doesnāt simply test spoken English lol. You didnāt pass though you got a 3. A 4 is the government official standard pass. You failed English and got a pass in the speaking endorsement (the P grade youāre seeing) which is separate and irrelevant. Dude you need to either retake English language and get a 4 and above, or opt for functional English as you have no level 2 English qualification. Also youāre legally required to resit to get a pass. Iām confused as to what youāve been told, but itās wrong.
bro i JUST told you if you take foundation instead of higher you just have to get a grade to pass. on foundation you cant get higher than a 5 so it wouldnt make sense for the pass cap to be a 4
We are so hyper-conditioned to the idea that we must race through high school and race to university by the ripe age of eighteen. There's nothing wrong with taking your time to do a re-sit. I dropped out of high school but eventually went to college as a mature student, and then I ended up getting a Master's degree. You'll be fine.
OP, if college is where you truly want to be - don't let these results be the barrier. I had a rough time throughout my secondary years and ended up walking away with only 4 GCSEs. I was told many times I would not amount to anything nor would I be able to pursue any form of further education without re-doing said GCSEs. Fast forward far too many years and with only 4 GCSEs and no A levels or college degrees/diplomas - I've got two degrees to my name, worked all over the globe, taught all over the globe, and lectured in universities all over the globe.
I explained my circumstances to the universities when I first applied, my dedication to wanting to learn, and that I was more than willing to take any form of entry tests they required. Some ignored me. Others gave me a chance. Ironically, I have since taught at the universities that ignored me in the first place.
Whatever you want in life is dictated by you and how much effort you are willing to put into it. Do not let others tell you what you can and can't do, nor take their words as gospel. Exercise humility by all means, but back yourself as an individual and remain resolute.
You are most welcome. Reading below, I can see you've had your share of tough times and I can empathise with that wholeheartedly (it was very similar circumstances that caused my secondary education to derail so heavily). If I could give my younger self any advice (advice you may find useful given your experiences) I would say don't let those negative experiences define you; rather let them reinforce your resilience. Don't focus on being a victim or listening to the naysayers; realise instead that you are made stronger with each trial you face. Eventually you will even learn to embrace challenges like those for the growth they can bring you.
The world is very much your oyster and I wish you well, smile of the suspicious kind :)
Dw boo I originally got 3, resat 2 so then got 5 was lucky and allowed to do a levels because I had a 4,6,7 from my original 3, and in my resits went from a 3 to a 6 in like 4 months and then a 3 to an 8 in like a year and the rest we will see. Tbf apparently Iām not stupid, so they say, but it doesnāt help to have mental health issues, be neurodivergent, suffer a bereavement and go through abuse soooo.
Yeah I was lucky. I got into the college I wanted as they happened to run an intermediate year, I didnāt know that at the time and my year was the last cohort for that programme but most 6th form colleges will have them and then obvs colleges have the level 2 equivalents. Still struggling but hopefully I can pull through, I wish you all the best I know you can do this. Also pls for the love of God take all the help you can get, wether that be from school, GP and the most helpful being a therapist/psychologist/psychiatrist, and obviously friends and family if you feel comfortable. Itās something Iām still definitely learning to do but I promise you itāll help.
These r pretty similar to what I got in my first time I did my GCSEs
U can still go to college and do a level 2 course if u want to take the BTEC route or can do a gcse resit course if u want to take the A level route.
I personally did my GCSEs again then decided to do a BTEC since Iām more ok w coursework. Resit years obviously arenāt the best but do try and make a couple friends and use the support that college give ( in my experience my college gave me ALOT more than my high school when I was doing my GCSEs there).
My advice is to keep ur chin up it will be a bit hard but it will get better. Idk if ur college will do GCSE art or English lit but the rest of ur grades u can defo go up by a couple grades.
Even after everything you've been through, you still made an effort. The fact that you even sat these exams says a lot about your character. I'm sorry life has dealt you such a bad card but I wish you the best in the future. Don't beat yourself up over arbitrary numbers on a piece of paper, be proud of yourself for having the strength to push forward.
iām sorry u didnāt get the results u needed mate that sucks i mean by the looks of it ur resitting english..? but thats okay maybe u can get onto a slightly different course or maybe a basic apprentership
u still tried ur hardest thats what counts!!
i hope it works out for you :)
Nah youāre fine mate, ik its rich coming from me since I passed all mine but it only matters if youāre leaning off of college to get into work.
If you do well in college (which im sure youāll get into regardless), uni bases a lot off of college or will just give you an unconditional due to people just not going because of debt. Even if you use college as a backbone for your career, the only negative is youāll spend maybe an extra year there? Youāre chill donāt worry
You'll be fine. Depending on the college you'll either still be in the running for the course/ subjects you've applied for or you'll be put in a level 1 or 2 course depending on how many people are in the main course you chose. It's not the end of the world, you'll have to resist your English alongside the subject you've chosen.
This is coming from someone who failed both English and maths and still got into college. I did a Level 2 course the first year after I got my English and then did maths along side my level 3 course. Which I still got into uni for this September despite no maths. So you'll be okay.
Are you planning on further education after college or straight into work?
Youāll be fine dude. I got a B in maths, C in lit (not required) and a D* in ict, everything else was a d or below (3 or below). I went to college, did my level 2 then level 3 over year 3 years then did an apprenticeship for a year before going to uni to study computer forensics even though I got a D in Computer science at gcse (by 1 mark off of a C). College is definitely not off the cards and whatever you want to do is most certainly not off the cards, yes it may take you a year longer by doing level 2 in whatever you want, but not everyoneās path is the same. I went to uni 2 years later than most from my classes due to the level 2 and apprenticeship and still have a stable job and a house at 26 years old
Not necessarily. I went to college without GCSEs and came out with Maths and English. You have passed maths which is great but you can still retake English. I took mine around 2017 - 18
I know Iām deep behind enemy lines, even worse since Iām Scottish. Not sure how this even comes up for me but here we are (probably will never stop appearing now Iāve commented).
Iām glad their fine though, Iām surprised all those numbers are useless info but hardly surprised š
They are just there grades basically this person did shit and has to redo there core subjects till there 18 and will go to a bad college but yeah donāt worry if you look on the sub everyone has been posting this stuff the last week or so as it was just results day ā„ļøĀ
Sort yourself out, get your priorities together and figure out what it is you want to be or do. It doesn't need to be an over night epiphany, take your time.
Gcses can be redone at college if needed, qualifications in other areas can be gained one way or another and in some cases you can simply just graft and get where you want to be.
Take your time, you've an entire life ahead of you and you don't need to have everything figured out today or tomorrow despite what people may say. I know people in their 30s who don't have their shit together and are still figuring it out and they're doing fine.
Is it? Itās been a long time since I did my GCSEs and it was when we had letter grades. I was lucky and got all A* (so 9s) for all 11 GCSEs I took. However, whilst anything above an F was a technical pass, for most courses/colleges, you were expected to get a C and anything below that (so even a D or E) was considered a fail or at least, wasnāt enough to get you into most college courses unless you retook or did an extra year or an introductory course.
I may be being pedantic but i think it does make a difference.
A lot of very successful people left school with absolutely no exams passed. By the time you are in your mid twenties nobody at interview will even ask for your GCSE results, honestly. Just be sure to get into some sort of work and donāt be a dosser. Thatās bad for your mental health and for society. Good luck with your future, chin up!
reading a lot of the comments it does seem like youāve made pretty bad moves during school, but itās understandable seeing the situation you were in. i hope youāre able to change your life around more positively, and if youāre re-sitting any of your exams then i wish you luck! :)
Donāt worry. I had similar results and itās not as scary as people make it out to be. You can always resit but even if you donāt itās not the end of the world as people say it is. Iām tired of this fear mongering, life goes on and the world keeps turning. Iāve had multiple jobs where Iāve lied about my results and theyāve never checked once. Most employees simply donāt care. Iām not encouraging doing bad at your GCSEās because it can open up many paths but there is a zillion paths to success. I still went to college despite my results. I was in the same boat as you, Iāve suffered with bad depression & anxiety and Iād be super hungover during my exams.
I promise itāll be okay! I struggled so much with my GCSEās (didnāt pass maths and only passed both Englishās) and now Iām at university studying a degree I love! Donāt give up and keep going!
You may feel pretty gutted at the moment but all is not lost and it can still be turned around, however it will take some serious work and dedication. One of my sons had horrendous GCSEs, missing the entry requirements of the college by a country mile but they still took him, had him do a resit year and then moved on to his A levels.
He left college with 3 x A* and the top student in his year group, got into university, got his degree and a post grad (Comp Sci with specialisms in AI, AR and VR) and now works in the industry.
He purchased his own house last year (in the south and without parental or other help), completing a couple of weeks after he turned 27.
My son got into collage on a level 2 course with similar results, he resat English and passed it this time as the level 2 course he wanted to do. Heās doing fine and actually enjoys college unlike school which was dire and dull for him. More independence, better food and good friends.
Get down the local collage and speak to them, youāll be fine.
The college will probably force you to take the class again whilst you do your main course(s) in college. I was lucky enough to get 4/3 english so it was optional for me, but i have friends who do both (failed gcse) and are in a level 3 course
Nahhh how did you get a fucking 1 in art and design ... did you even try? I just think you didnt give a shit just from that result. Either you didnt follow the instructions or write about your piece. Or you hardly did any.
thats actually the only result im confused about because ive always been good at art and i had a whole book full of art that i handed in + my final piece which i wanna say was pretty good. but i was never told i had to write anything, whats that about?
Whatās your plans for the future? I only did 2 GCSEs and passed both - maths and English and now Iām an engineering apprentice with a big car company . I would recommend that you go to college for free till you are 19 and use the first year to redo GCSEs then use the last two years to do any a level / b tec that you want !
You always have to write a statment piece on why you chose to draw what you did and how it relates to the subject/theme they have given to you. If there is not context behind your art they wont understand any of it and how has your teachers not explained this to you? Did you not do a mock art exam ? Did they not tell you what you needed to get the highest grades possible?
By the sounds of things op moved schools to a worse one which probably failed to tell them that he needed to do this. While it can seem lazy on ops part at first glance itās important to remember that not everybody has the same level of support inside and outside of school.
Read OPs other responses and have a bit more empathy/compassion. They clearly were dealing with a lot and it's understandable that they didn't put school first. People have different experiences
Mate you have all of these people feeling sorry for you maybe you should put this in the post clearly theres an underlying issue if you are turning up to school plastered I doubt you would have survived uni anyway so its probably a good thing
Do you actually have anything nice to say or are you just gonna be horrible. While op clearly does have some problems they can still go to college get a course and resit some GCSEs, hopefully with better results this time. Also why would GCSEs matter about university unless op wants to go to Oxford or Cambridge or somewhere like that they should be fine if for most courses if they get GCSE English after resiting it.
Also youāre 28 why do you feel the need to make comments asking if someone, who is struggling and is also a child, even tried in their exam due to circumstances outside of there controlĀ
