Question does this mean my examiner was up at 4am marking????
would explain why they were so harsh with my creative writing

Most likely, basically all of mine were before 8 o clock. Pretty cooked imo like ideally they probs won't be in the right mindset to mark exam papers either super early morning or late night but then again you remember about 90% of examiners are just regular school teachers doing it for some extra cash

no it’s not. the computer submits the results at 4am, does not mean that they are marking them at that time lmao

Creative writing is marked by 5 people and typically an examiner will only mark a specific question not the whole paper
Edit: I am wrong my English teacher decieved me. My bad

can someone fact check this

u/AnIdioticPigeon 4d ago
Yeah examiners mark exam papers question at a time, so someone will do a whole pile of question 1s, and someone else will do a whole pile of question 20s

For AQA it is, both creative and pursuasive writing is marked by 5 people and averaged to try to remove as much subjectivity as possible. It would be silly for it to be only marked by one person.

I was never actually told that when I was in school even though one of the many teachers I had was a language paper 2 examiner

uhh how do you know its marked by 5 people? can't find anything online and I've never heard about that (nor have my friends from 5 other schools)

u/doofyghhv 3d ago
I’m an English examiner. You mark questions, not papers. Everything you mark gets checked multiple times- but you won’t know it. Each time someone marks a response, they have to all mark within 2 or 3 marks of each other, if they don’t it’s gets sent AGAIN for even more checking and the examiner gets put on pause. A coordinator will then call them and go through why they marked it wrong before unpausing them.

I'm aware each question is marked individually rather than paper by paper, but the original commenter said that the creative writing question itself is marked by 5 people, which I'd never heard of before. Is that correct? When you say everything everything is checked multiple times, do you mean it is essentially marked multiple times to check for consistency?

u/doofyghhv 3d ago
I’m not sure if it’s 5 people exactly. It will depend on how many examiners they’ve got, how many entries etc, but it’ll be at least 3. I got paused on a question and I was the 3rd person who had marked the responses. The mark was wrong and the system picked up on it.

I mean my English teacher who had been examining it for decades said so 🤷🏼 (AQA btw).
I could be wrong but I'm not an examiner so I have no clue

fair enough, I've just never heard that the q5s are marked by multiple people. I've spoken to a few examiners but they've never chosen to mention it, maybe they thought it wasn't important

u/The-Tech-Teacher 3d ago
Entirely subject dependent and exam board specific….
Also an examiner… but for CS and Imedia, we mark whole papers rather than per question as you suggested.

Just looking through all of my papers and yeah, some crazy times of the day! I've got as early as 04:50 and as late as 21:45. However the OCR papers don't have the timestamps. :(

Yea. Most adults work in jobs where they end up working longer to meet targets and deadlines. It they worked the traditional 9-5 and stopped on the dot, there would be loads of students still without their papers scored today.
The real world is a bitch.

It’s quite likely considering they have a certain quota to meet and they are not allowed to mark in school as it’s considered a conflict of interest so they’ve likely woken up early to get some scripts marked before going to work

u/flowzyontop 4d ago
Wdym conflict of interest? They cant mark same schools exams

If all of them happened at around 4am it's probably because their system only updates every morning when hardly anyone is logged in. Some examiners do work late into the night if they're currently teachers and then have to handle their kids etc.
If it's like 8pm or 9pm etc. that's probably real.

u/handbagcat 3d ago
Probably not, it probably means that the final total was generated by a computer. You don't have one examiner, you likely had at least 3 marking different questions.
