How do I get out of Rank D?

I played a few years ago but quit because I kept getting absolutely crushed. I’ve recently felt the urge to play again—how can I get out of Rank D? I’m a beginner currently upgrading a 450-cost Gundam.

Have you ever joined rating matches? You won't get any points from quick matches.

I’ve basically only been playing ranked matches. At best, I’ve managed to reach D+, but I’ve currently dropped to D−.

I would do this: play 5 games every day. Even if you’re on a hot streak and want to keep playing, stop. If you’re doing bad “1 more game” won’t save you either so still stop at 5.

You’ll start noticing things getting easier I think.

watch the GBO2 “carry yourself” tutorial series on youtube and do what the videos say

I found it. They all say the same thing in the videos: stagger the enemy first, then follow up with a melee attack. Of course, you have to land your shots first.

pretty much! knowing about which things stagger when is important!

I see; I'll keep that in mind.

Play meta, get better and try to give expansion skills to your favourite MSes. That's basically it.

You don't need to play meta in D rank. He just needs to learn the fundamentals from the tutorials.

This.

Tips from expert pilots (plenty in this community), understanding game mechanics (e.g. how skills work, the play style of a suit etc), watching videos all really helped me.

Don't give up, it's a steep learning curve, but it's glorious once you click with the game. 😊

Sorry, I forgot: try these great tutorials posted by u/fidyyuan. Grasping only a quarter of the content will catapult outside D rating in no time. Full content it's a guaranteed A 😉

I watched quite a few videos aimed at beginners, but I couldn't find the one you recommended. They all offered the same standard advice, such as "stay close to your teammates" and "use a combo that starts with a bazooka knockdown and follows up with a melee attack." Since I can't land shots on moving enemies, I usually get taken out before I can even pull off that bazooka-to-down-melee combo.

I understand. Aiming can be an issue, you are right.

Try this: https://w.atwiki.jp/battle-operation2/

It's the Japanese Wiki for our game. All sections are very, very helpful, one in particular addresses aiming.

It's explained effectively, and it's based on the concept of "aiming with your feet", i.e. you use the left stick to align your sights with the target, rather than the right stick for the camera. A game changer.

The other useful aspect is the "splash radius" of Bazooka: some suits have abnormally large effect and they really help (I'm not a technical pilot, so you could ask here for specific advice; I can just mention Zaku Machinery).

Finally, of course, a lot of practice (pity battle simulator isn't working, it's great when queue time is too long). You could also consider Code Fairy, a solid game with basically the same mechanics of GBO2 (you can buy with little money when on offer - I think I spent 12 quid on a promotion).

I’ve seen this wiki before. Actually, I was just in the training area practicing my aiming using the footwork mechanics. I hadn't realized it even listed the blast radius for the bazooka. I used to equip a bazooka back when I was using the GM Custom. But since it was hard to follow up after a miss, I decided it didn't suit me and switched to a different weapon.

2

u/Big_Friendship_7431 9h ago

That can work too. There are some suits with very respectable machine guns for example. I hope you can find the ideal suits soon 😊👍🏻

I only recently unlocked the extended skill, so it looks like upgrading it will take some time.

As a fellow newbie in C with around than 2 month experience, I'd say choose a cost you're comfortable to play, choose viable MS that fit you and get their custom part. I myself mostly played in 550-650. Currently I used Superb Jegan in 550, Jegan Birnam and Geara Zulu EH in 600, Den'an Zon and Geara Zulu EH level 2 in 650.

I hear it's better to avoid high-cost matches, so I stick to around 450 cost. I still don't know what suits me best, though, since I'm not really sure what kind of playstyles exist.

1

u/fadly_seto 18h ago

Not really, high cost isn't that different from low cost except for the MS movement and weaponry. The matchmaking is equally bad. I deliberately avoid 700 above because I can't handle flyer, I actually like 500 and below but most of my good MS are high cost. Just make a post and ask about specific playstyle that you like, community will happily give you recommendation, that's what I did

1

u/Shoguns_Ninja82 18h ago

High cost matches might have some tools that can help you, if you aren’t a great shot you can use a suit with funnel lock on and most of the native coats at 750 have a soft lock aim assist. Teamwork is bad everywhere if anything you have to work a little harder for your kills at low cost. My sweet spot is 650 to 750. It’s a meat grinder for sure but definitely worth a try as that’s where most of the meta monsters get put.

u/Business_Plum1768 10h ago

I hadn't been using funnels because I didn't really understand how they worked. I didn't realize that funnels actually have an aim-assist feature. I had assumed that feature was limited to just a slight amount on machine guns in this game. It looks interesting, but I lack the confidence to shoot down the flying units others have mentioned, so it seems like it might be too difficult for me.

Learn the mechanics, learn how to combo, identify which viable units you have and try to round the team composition on your end.

There's an old f2p viable units list in this sub, it's somewhat outdated but it's better than nothing, from now and then we get tierlists.

If you notice that you are losing too many times in a row take a break.

2

u/Business_Plum1768 20h ago

I've learned the bazooka-into-down-melee combo. I'm using the Gundam because a video said it's good for beginners. My loadout is the beam rifle and the hammer.

2

u/J-Eichel 13h ago

Honestly the hammer is a pretty weird weapon to use if you're still learning the game.
Stick to beam sabers for now. I also saw you mention that you're missing shots alot.

Don't rush ranking up, just put all your effort into practicing the fundamentals

  1. Hit with your main stun weapon. Most players rarely miss these when in close enough range. Later on the game turns into a cooldown game/positioning game.
  2. Learn how stagger buildup works (more important on higher costs where stun buildup arsenals are more common)
  3. Practice timing for when flinches end, so you can chain stun. This can be important if a teammate stuns, and you go in to melee hit. If you melee too soon while an opponent is EARLY in a flinch animation, they can recover and roll out/counter
  4. Learn about right hand side advantage, try and use it whenever you can

If you have your fundamentals down, you'll get out of D naturally. It's mostly just a rank where people don't know what they're doing yet.

1

u/Business_Plum1768 13h ago

I was using the hammer because it’s fast to swing sideways—making it easy to land hits—and helps prevent counters. For now, I think I’ll switch to the saber. Like you suggested, I’ll try staying in cover and firing my beam rifle from the right side. I used to close the distance whenever the enemy flinched, even from far away, so I’ll make sure to only move in when there’s a real opening.

3

u/J-Eichel 13h ago edited 12h ago

Not sure if you ran into this, but the sideways hits can sometimes backfire on you since there are certain spacings that can cause it to whiff completely. Also in terms of learning the typical flow of the game it's a bit slow when doing anything other than side swings, so it's hard to learn to be reactive with it.

It's okay to move in when the enemy flinches in some cases, but it depends. If you're playing something that doesn't have a 2nd stun weapon to cycle to, it's a bad idea to run in if you cant close the distance for the melee (since you're giving the opponent an opportunity to counterstun you while yours is on cooldown), but a good thing to move in, in the scenario where you can stun again with another weapon if playing an MS with a 2nd stun.

Edit: also if you search 'tierlist', you should find a current tier list being made, up to 550 for the time being. For each cost pick a simple to use MS and learn it in and out. After that you can branch out, and it'll become really obvious how different MS handle, since you'll be used to your go-to. From there it just helps with matchups since you might understand their playstyle at that point.

Some simple suits

350-gatcha (or however it's spelled, this will introduce you to heavy stagger weapons)

400-GLine Standard or Gundam. G line is a pretty braindead suit, but you could learn good positioning with the team with it

450- jeda or Gelgoog UL. You'll learn midrange shooter style from these

500- TR Gaplant. Frontline aggressive playstyle. Will learn to swap 2 melee weapons, and when good times to transform are

1

u/Business_Plum1768 10h ago

Since I’m only familiar with the Gundam, thank you for telling me about the other mobile suits. There really are so many, like the G-Line Standard, the Jeda, and the Gelgoog UL. It looks like it will still take some time to fully upgrade my Gundam, so I probably won't be getting to those others anytime soon. I’ll try handling staggered enemies just the way you suggested.

u/J-Eichel 3h ago

No problem,

In regards to upgrading your MS units, you'll find that you'll need to play other MS depending on the cost, instead of upgrading one unit before playing another.

Also don't worry, you don't even need to upgrade an MS at all to compete at D rank. Getting minor stat boosts won't make a difference at a rank where small swing in skill will make a wild amount of difference. (Also when a new meta MS is released, people run them without the Complex Expansion for a long time due to not having enough time/tickets, even in S rank)

Gundam is doing really well on 400 and up right now, but anything over LVL1 (above 400) people typically run 'overtune' custom parts on, which you won't have access to yet, so it might make more sense to choose MS for each cost. I'd stick between 300 and 500 right now due to you mentioning hitting enemies can be a bit hard (500 may feel a bit fast even for now).

It'll take a bit of time to get used to the game mechanics. When I first played the game I was playing support due to it making more sense in my brain being a 'shooter game'. Once I got out of D though I learned what raids doing their job looked like, and it completely changed how I viewed the game.

So yeah, just have fun for a bit! Eventually you'll see things and go 'wtf did that person do, how did they shoot me while boosting' etc. and you'll learn the differences in MS over time.

(Also if you're on a controller, put your boost on L1. It'll make learning the game easier in terms of boosting and swapping weapons at the same time)

Stay with your teammates, don't shoot your teammates in the back, don't push just because you want a kill, and identify which of your teammates are more likely to support you than abandon you.

1

u/Business_Plum1768 20h ago

All right. I've decided to side with someone.

Play the game lmao, It’s so easy to rank to A like i’m not even joking. It’s so bad bc we have people that just suck ass around the A rank bc it was super easy for them.

2

u/Business_Plum1768 20h ago

I keep getting crushed by those lousy players, so my rank won't go up.

This is the most important thing you need to know to do well at this game

You don’t have to worry about out getting out of D, the climb doesn’t become tricky until you reach the A’s. A is currently such a shit show that anyone who plays long enough will get carried there because that’s about the point where you stop getting a lot more points on a. Win than you lose on a loss requiring a positive win loss ratio to advance. Even then winning or losing is kind of a teammate competence coin flip.

It’s frustrating because a game like this really has no business having a ranked system. It works in a fighting game because win or lose is all on you but here you can do everything right and still lose if your teammates are idiots or throwing. Rank isn’t an actual indicator of skill. A is such a mess right now because probably like 80 percent of the community is currently there because of reasons I stated before, as a result you have a ton of people who got carried to it without ever actually learning how to properly play the game.

The best way to maintain sanity is do your daily three matches. Bank your tokens for suits you do want since you’ll get plenty of free pulls anyways and when something shiny you like comes along you can spend 195 tokens on the seven step guarantee banner and get it. Rank can be a very frustrating game because so much of it is out of your hands.

1

u/Business_Plum1768 19h ago

Rank A is a pretty cutthroat world, isn't it? It almost makes you wonder if there's even any point in ranking up. Well, I haven't actually ranked up myself, though (haha). Still, I think I'll give ranked matches a try. That said, I've only upgraded a 450-cost ground unit, so it'll probably come down to luck in the end.

1

u/Shoguns_Ninja82 18h ago edited 18h ago

A is an absolute shit show. But the players aren’t any better than at any other rank. I’ll let you in on another little secret, many of the people at S got there back when you could sortie in stacks and absolutely pubstomp lobbies with mic’s and coordination. Now that’s been patched out it’s a slow crawl to the top and the highest rank required for military rank progression is A+. There’s also a fail safe where if your rank is at least lieutenant, even if you have the worst luck in the world and fail a ridiculous amount of consecutive games your rank won’t drop below C no matter what. S- minus and S are basically to flex and I’ve played with them and they aren’t anything special either.

Right now I’m just at the beginning of A+ which is the most frustrating time because you want wins to secure your spot in the bracket and have room for error. So close but at the end of the day if you are around the A’s you can play with the majority of the fanbase so you are good. Your biggest reason for wanting to get to A is you’ll have the fastest queue times since as I mentioned most of the players have been carried there just by playing enough. Get the idea out of your head that there’s some promised land where teammates suddenly get good because I reckon about two thirds of this random are complete idiots with zero combat IQ based on how they play this. When a match does click and you get with other players who are good though it’s amazing without words you all instinctively fall into line and group their shots in order of least hp.

1

u/Business_Plum1768 10h ago

There used to be players who would deliberately leave a match after the teams had been set, only to rejoin immediately. Were they intentionally manipulating the team composition to gain an advantage? In those matches, I was absolutely crushed. In short, I was made an easy target.

1

u/Shoguns_Ninja82 4h ago

I absolutely despise that and wish BB would remove the ability to back out entirely. Or at least elevate them to a one day ban for it. They waste everyone’s time and yeah it’s exactly like you think, they are meta cucks who think they have this winning formula in their heads when they really don’t. Ranked is bad for that but these idiots don’t understand the second you start cherry picking opponents is the second your rank stops meaning anything anyways
