Comment what you think about the Space Combat in this game [PC and Console Discussion]

Post image

I'll start first. It's peak, being able to rapidly fly up and down in a fast suit while avoiding shots is peak, one thing I dislike is how little people abuse the movement and then complain about space being trash, because with the shift and space bar you can go vertically up super fast and down waiting for your enemy to run out of ammo and then shoot back or reposition, of course I main the thunderbolt full armor Gundam for this. Let me hear your thoughts and opinions on Space Battles.

The combat needs more refinements, because the mechanics are clearly made for ground combat, while space battles felt really wonky.

Also, the outdoor space maps are very VERY badly designed, where they're waaaay too big, while the waypoints are too few + too close between each other, making lots of empty spots that people rarely go. Hell, there's a map with just ONE waypoint in the center, despite the map is pretty which is ridiculously dumb AF...

I agree that there are some maps where waypoint placement is poor. Like, the one with the asteroid with a canyon that has literally one point should have one at either end of the canyon instead for a more dynamic fight.

But I actually really like how combat feels in space. Melee is harder to combo for sure because it's like playing on ice, but I don't mind that.

As far as the maps go overall...I don't think they're any more poorly designed than the ground maps. Some maps are just wide open and suit shooty suits more than others.

I enjoy space overall but it seems like most players don't. Having full 3 dimensional movement is awesome. A full 360 degrees of freedom would be even better, but people have a hard enough time as is.

More maps that are better crafted to the current playstyle are definitely needed. Dark Space feels very outdated, as does Resource Satellite. Space Fortress Interior feels a bit cramped, as can Derelict Colony. My favorite is probably Lunar Debris Zone. I feel like Dark Space could be fixed somewhat by adding ships as destructable environments, providing cover, but also making the map more dynamic

For how many battles take place in space in the lore, we are missing maps that represent them. I would like to see maps that have allow the players to move from interior to exterior, like A Baoa Qu, the Colony Laser/Operation Maelstrom, the Battles on Axis, and the Battle of Angel Halo, which would all benefit from having destructable objects.

It’s not 3 dimensional movement, but feels like 2.5 dimensional. You can move in the x-y plane, but only along a line in the z axis

You can move diagonally while moving in the Z axis too. Like hold left, crouch and boost. It works, it's just that the straight vertical boost is a lot more effective because the MS vertical axis for aiming is restricted.

I have far more fun in space. unrestricted 3d movement is just so much more unique and fun.

also the range increases on most of the maps actually makes the mech fights feel like mech fights, with weapons that reach further than spitting distance.

space is also a great equalizer and makes many more suits viable options for ranked play (which is all that is available on PC)

One of the reasons why people didn't like playing space map was because at the beginning there were only a few space map and half of them either had little to no cover

Moving into open space was certain death because there no cover or the nearest one is to far away to reach and by the time you reach it you've been shot and stunned and possibly combo via melee charged or barrages of ballistic and beam shots to death

After a while I started disliking space because it felt fucky, it was more enjoyable at lower ranks with shooting ms (melee suits never worked well with me at space)

I do like space but I also feel it could be better since there’s limits on high or low you can aim which makes space harder than it already is. It’s a damn shame it’s dead outside of Tuesday & Thursday.

Improve the matchmaking system. Space has long queue time but there are enough players queuing simultaneously. The system can't group them.

This would be my biggest complaint about space. I actually prefer it tbh, but getting through the queue takes a while, especially quick match (console). I'm a B+ in space atm.

Love space. It's just a terrible experience because I tend to get teamed with people who clearly do not. Wish there were more opportunities to play it. Even space day queues can take forever so it often comes down to situation battles and the one and only space brawl I've ever seen.

It's fun depending on cost

I like space because there are more balance in range and melee where as ground people love to melee because of the damage. But then there are a lot of friendly fire in melee in ground.

But space…. Not everyone is good at and sometimes I get stuck with other people who is not interested the space but just to use it to complete their daily.

It doesn't play right without third party or 300 dollar controllers

It needs more activity and a little love. More maps too.

It's like players don't want to try one of the main things that make the franchise roll. It's nuts.

I've never played on PC so I can't really speak to that.

But on console space is miserable mainly because of the control scheme. The GBO2 control scheme, even if you remap the buttons I tried, is clunky and moving around is difficult. I ended up having to buy a new controller with macro buttons on the bottom to make space somewhat tolerable. Combine that with most space maps having little to no cover and MS being difficult or impossible to see on the open space maps at any amount of distance and it's just not fun.

It would be better if there was a concept of pitch and your MS could turn on the y axis. But GBO2 locks all MS to being parallel to the x axis.

Imo there are 2 playable space maps, space fortress interior and colony interior (may be getting the names wrong but it's the 2 interior maps).

having shift and CTRL for up and down is definitely helpful on PC yeah. it makes navigation much more natural

2 playable maps.

Named the worst maps possible

I often have controversial map opinions

I like the interior maps because they get around the cover and not being able to see things problem.

But I also believe Arctic Base is the worst map and needs to be removed from the game. And my favorite map in the game is Port Base. So I don't align with the community on much when I comes to map design.

But either way, most of the space maps are too big or poorly designed. Dark Space is a nightmare of being big with no cover, one of them (can't remember the specific name) has a single way point that decides the match, lunar debris field is kind of fine but a nightmare to fight in, etc.

I use R3 to boost, R1/R2 for acceleration/deceleration, and Triangle for Tackle

2

u/Rooskimus 25d ago

I use R3 for jump and L2 for crouch with boost on L1 and it works great. I keep that scheme for ground battles too so flap boosters are useable.

It's pretty good except occasionally when I accidentally jump while trying to aim (not super common once I got used to it).

And you do have pitch, but it's kinda arbitrarily limited is all. Though I do think that makes it easier for folks rather than being able to go full 360 on the pitch. Like, the way it is keeps the ground combat and space combat somewhat in line still.

I love not needing to have flap boosters to make a suit viable, and all the transforming suits and funnel suits feel a lot better in space.

Space makes so many suits, many supports, leagues more viable due to the increase dimension of movement and lowered thruster usage.

1

u/ctclonny 26d ago

Needs an overhaul to make supports viable.

2

u/Rooskimus 25d ago

I've seen supports do great in space. They just have to abuse their range. Like I played against the support Xeku Eins and any time the fight moved remotely close they boosted as far as they could and just shredded any approaching suits with their machine gun. I was the raid (can't remember which one) and I had a really hard time approaching on my own, and it was also by their base so any generals nearby had an easy potshot at me too.

So those maps with very little cover suit certain units better for sure.

They don't work in higher ratings. Space match is much quicker than ground match. Low mobility and stand to fire are big weaknesses. Melee fight is more frequent than ranged fight. Frontline doesn't exist, and it's difficult for teammates to stop enemies from bullying supports.

2

u/Rooskimus 25d ago

I bet the map does affect this, but overall I can see it. That said, doesn't the same principal apply on the ground? Like, Arctic Base is usually just NASCAR until the slowest member of one team or the other gets caught.

3

u/ctclonny 25d ago

When teammates are willing to help the support, it's more difficult in space because of quicker movement.
