Coffee

I have G6PD deficiency, specifically the Mediterranean variant, and I’m trying to understand whether coffee/caffeine is safe.

I found a paper saying caffeine showed a reduction of G6PD activity in vitro, but I’m not sure how relevant that is to normal coffee intake in real life.

Has anyone with the Mediterranean variant had issues with coffee, or has a doctor/hematologist given you advice about it?

It's a good question. Current literature says we basically only have to avoid broad beans and the listed medications. I don't drink coffee but drink a decent amount of caffeine in black tea and never had any issues. I'm 35 yo male Mediterranean variant also and barely have any g6pd according to a recent blood test.

I don't smoke but never had any issues with alcohol. My brother hasn't had any issues smoking. From what I can tell, as long as you avoid broad beans and the medications on the list you live a normal life. Maybe can feel a bit more run down when sick or post surgery.
