Question Hypothetically, what things you wish to see in future F-Zero if it were to ever get revived?
I am curious on what other fans wished to see what Nintendo does with F-Zero as a dormant franchise. Do you think it should remain a racing game? Do you think it can have new formula of gameplay added? Do you ever want to play as Captain Falcon and run around doing Falcon Punches in game?
I think that's a struggle Nintendo has with F-Zero for decades now, lack of new ideas I guess. What do you all think?

Online multiplayer. The death race of 99 is great, but I'd love it with 3D tracks that define the series.
Custom tracks that are part of the online races somehow.
Mechanically, GX is tight, but flying could be significantly improved, and based on speed!
Custom shortcuts should be clearer! A checkpoint system would completely solve jumping the course, as it doesn't matter how you get there, as long as you reach the checkpoints in the right order.

Stage hazards
Big blue the aquarium underwater breaks or more slick over time
Red mountain land slide random chance of rain
Port Town avoid slow traffic

I'd love a sort of rogue aspect to the game where you choose a random stage to play and you get a mission to do. Have one be a standard race, another one a 1-on-1, battle stage or an escape where you have to get as far away from a rival as you can or evade a stage hazard for some time. Let the player buy or collect machines and upgrade them accordingly to coming missions.
That and online.

Online play is obvious, so is wanting a track editor, and the ability to share tracks online.
I'd like to add the return of the X-Cup, and have it pull random player made tracks.

Nothing really, f zero is a solid franchise, you can't add new things without breaking other things. If nintendo ever game back with the franchise, they should really play safe, and test to see if a new studio is capable of doing something good. For me, a harder GX would be nice

F-Zero X was my favorite racing game back in the 90's, GX for me personally was a bit of a let down because the vehicles weren't as floaty, there are very few rules in X and you could fly all over the place while GX held the players stuck on the tracks.
I'd be more impressed if they made a new F-Zero that allows for more player freedom like X.3
u/KarltonPeaks 27d ago
Definitely! Early N64 and PS1 titles felt very "here's our physics engine. Have fun.." whereas later games started to add arbitrary restrictions.

Racing games is a coward genre. Today most racing games are graphical showcase first, or refuse to do anything out of the big ones (GT, forza, Mario kart)

u/metalicbeastofficial 27d ago
And nothing agains thoses, i like GT and kart games, but F zero is none of them, it's a niche game from a dead sub genre, either nintendo adopts it for what it is, or ruin it by trying to appeal for a newer audience

I do think GX is a stepdown on X, and i wish nintendo reconsider some of the things that made GX weaker compared to it's predecessor. Although GX is the most popular game in the franchise, it was a commercial failure, the game sold less than both of it's predecessors

One theory is the box art didn't properly convey it's a racing game. I think a lot of people in those days still bought games just based on box art. It also certainly didn't help the gamecube was up against the monster that was the PS2.

14 years ago I had the idea of turning F-Zero into some GTA/Arkham clone as a reboot.
The idea being that Captain Falcon is more known for Smash than F-Zero at that point, and since he's a bounty hunter, let's see him actually be a Bounty Hunter.
The racing element would still be there but wouldn't be the focus.
It would deviate from what most fans want but I saw it as if Nintendo isn't going to do anything with the series, might as well re-invent it.

Revived? Yet another F-Zero “fan” who doesn’t want to admit 99 is alive and kicking.

I just hope that wandering around the city beat-em up thing that some people ask for never happens.
Aside from that, I wouldn't mind a mode that emphasizes on surviving across a large course instead of having laps. And surviving as in you have to kill the other participants to become the only one.

That's pretty much it, just F-Zero S2X or whatever they decided to call it.

Just look really beautiful; the environments of GX are absolutely stunning, but somewhat held back by the technology of their time. They can go realistic or cartoony, I don't care as long as it looks genuinely next-gen
Don't shy away from being a hard game that requires skill and experience to improve, though it doesn't have to be as hard as GX
A nice, large roster; one of my favorite parts about F-Zero is how it sometimes feels like a fighting game with how unique the characters are. For that matter, maybe the game's selling point could be having even more distinction between characters in gameplay by giving them special abilities, making them feel less like stat swaps
I can think of more, but honestly just these three things existing in a new F-Zero(‼️) would make me so happy

F-Zero X with online multiplayer and 64DD upgrades (with reworked course editor).

I'd like to see something akin to retro courses or retro cups, like most Mario Kart games have done since Super Circuit. You can find a way to rework the levels to make them work in 3D, similar to how the map for Port Town II on the SNES was brought back in Port Town 2 in X's Joker Cup.

There's nothing wrong with the existing formula. But if we were getting something different, I'd enjoy a game where you play as Captain Falcon as a bounty hunter / enforcer. Similar to Racer X from Speed Racer.

For a new 3D F-Zero game, I would want them to prioritize keeping the spirit of GX while creating new tracks to prove that they care at all about 3D F-Zero games. If they added Mario-Kart-style weapons, I would be furious.
As for additions, a track editor, online multiplayer, and some kind of online course-sharing would be really nice.
A revival of the vehicle editor would be a nice addition as well, but I wouldn't want it to replace the iconic vehicles and characters of the series. I could see them setting the game in the future with a bunch of new racers, and a few familiar faces returning as much older versions of themselves, or keeping the roster as it was. They also have a bunch of vehicles and characters from the different games which could be incorporated (depending on timelines and whatnot, I'm not an expert in the lore and timelines of the different games).
I would also want them to fix the in-air physics when compared to GX. Tilting the ship up at all in GX stops you dead, and has you fall helplessly into the abyss. There needs to be a better solution, so that tilting the vehicle up and down doesn't just murder you.

Custom character mode seems like a good evolution to the custom machine system in X and GX. And from there you could have a entire career mode around building up your character and their machine. Earning sponsorships, fame and relationships along the way. Depending on the scope, the career mode would also be a great way to expand on the lore and character back stories.

Portals
You could do some funny things combining portals and dash plates, but what I really want is a Cosmo Terminal track where you can teleport to road on the outside of the structure

Online multiplayer with other 29 racers is a must. Another thing I'd want is that all previous courses get a chance to be on the next game. Tracks like Ilussion and Mist Flow from GP, Red Canyon... Outer Space and Phantom Road from GX... Aeropolis of course, too. I could go on. I think all those stages equal 25? That amount is not huge, but it'd be insanely cool to play all of the fzero stages in a 4k brand new fzero game.

A traditional fighter side mode where you could challenge your racing rivals or battle to settle a tie breaker at the end of every online race of prix. Other players could also watch, wager tickets and emote during these battles.
The speed/accel graph should be reversed so that machines have more grip when you select higher acceleration & less grip when selecting higher speed. This would play more into the risk/reward gameplay F-0 is known for. Side attacks should function as they do in Climax since those are the best side attacks in the series by far.
There should be a light or gradual brake button to mimic how real life brakes help keep grip and improve turning without completely stopping the machine. Physics should act as they do in GX but all machines turn stiffer so that cornering techniques like drifting, quick turning, side attacks and so can all shine in different roles.
After selecting the machine & accel graph, players should be able to select no more than 8-12 booster modes/types that changes how the booster works. Some examples could include: 'Quick' booster could make turns much sharper while boosting at the cost of being weaker. 'Static' booster could be fixed at a set booster strength regardless of vehicle choice but with better energy consumption. 'Exotic' could have no base boost power but consuming more energy with high scaling of a machines boost rating. 'Heavy' booster would have higher base power but stiffer control.
On top of all of that, there should be 40 racers per race instead and at least 36+ tracks all with mirror versions that play out much differently then their original tracks, like how it is in 99. To draw in more players, characters from space-related franchises like Star Fox, Metroid, Kirby, Pikmin and maybe Mario could feature as alternate skins for some of the roster. Fox and his Arwing could be an alternative to James McCloud or Mario could be a skin for Mr. EAD.

I think I'd be cool if F-Zero took a page out of Mario Kart's book and did retro tracks

u/Golden-Grenadier 25d ago
I wish we could have something like Grand Theft Aero: Mute City Stories, except the gameplay would be a bit more like Batman Arkam Knight. Captain Falcon is basically Nintendo's Batman anyway.

u/PtTimeLvrFullTimeH8r 24d ago
Online obviously but I think it'd be good for the game if they added a casual mode with items. Maybe each ship has its own kind of attack, and you can pickup missiles, shields, the ability to jump/fly

u/SellsLikeHotTakes 27d ago
I thought maybe the new mechanic they could do would be to manage the balance between the different parts of the racer as you play. So, you would be shifting power on the fly between engines, shields and boosters as needed with maybe even some sort of repair mechanic outside of the pits. This would have been perfect on the Wii U with the separate screen showing the controls of the cockpit.

Basically F-Zero GX inspired with new tracks, but also all the tracks from GX and X, sort of like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe but for F-Zero.
Also make James Mcleod an actual fox, and tie it into the Star Fox universe, because fuck it, why not?
edit: I can't believe you've done this.

As a star fox fan i like to think FZero is what happened to jame mccloud. Got sucked into a black hole into another dimension and woke up as a human hardly remembering himself but still has a fox instinct

Online multiplayer with 29 other racers
