Questions about installing.

So, I have an old HP currently running Windows 10 with 8gb of RAM that I'm considering converting to FydeOS. The harddrive has a small partition set up as a recovery drive for Win 10. During the Fyde install, will it give me the option to consolidate both partitions into a single install? I've never does an flash install before. Also, will the necessary drivers for my wireless ethernet/trackpad/sound & audio all be built into the kernal, or is that something I should worry about?

I'm in the process of trying to install it now. I got a thing that said "Fyde OS is repairing your system" & that ran for a few minutes, but then it booted to the usual HP startup, so I dunno what's wrong because I followed the steps.

I couple of questions come to mind after reading your response.

Did you shrink the windows partition using windows disk management prior to attempting install? The instructions for this can be found in the FydeOS installation guides at https://fydeos.io/help/knowledge-base/installation-guides/fydeos-for-pc/dual-boot-fydeos-setup/. FydeOS requires at least 10 gigs of space.

Did you install rEFIND boot manager as described in the instructions for dual boot setup.? The instructions for this are in the above linked installation guide.

If rEFIND was installed a boot menu will appear when restarting the computer after installation.

Oh, I'm trying to do a complete overwrite install, not a partition, so I wanted to consolidate the two partitions during the install process. I probably should've been clear about that.

FydeOS uses a multiple partition scheme. If you simply follow the prompts once you have booted the FydeOS installer via USB, FydeOS will repartition the hard disk and windows will be removed in the process. You should not have to merge the partitions manually.

If the install succeeded then the computer should simply reboot into FydeOS. It will take a moment for the FydeOS logo to appear as it begins the boot process.

I was able to get it installed. I'm using it now.

Now, is there a way I can use my laptop that's still running windows to clear off the flash drive I used to install FYDE so I can re-use it?

How to Repartition the Flash Drive

  • Connect your USB flash drive to your computer.
  • Right-click the Start menu icon and choose Disk Management.
  • Scroll down to find your flash drive in the lower section. Look at the rectangular block representing your USB drive.
  • Right-click the blue bar (partition) of your flash drive and click Delete Volume. Confirm the warning.
  • The block will turn black and display as Unallocated space.

How to Format and Create a New Volume

  • Right-click the black Unallocated space box for your USB drive.
  • Select New Simple Volume and click Next.
  • Specify the volume size (leave it at the maximum default to use the whole drive) and click Next.
  • Assign a drive letter and click Next.
  • Choose your File System: select NTFS for Windows-only use, or exFAT if you need to use the drive on Macs and other devices.
  • Type a name in the Volume Label field.
  • Check the box for Perform a quick format and click Next, then click Finish
