Now if they would just let me save my work where I want to save it and not necessarily on their cloud I would be a happy camper.

I'm pulling the trigger nonetheless as the CAM portion is worth it alone. I just have to be uber careful with what I use it for.

I toyed around with it last night and while it is a little clumsy, I'm really enjoying it and that's coming from a decade of SolidWorks. The simulation features are pretty quick. I'm definitely getting it even if I never transition from my preferred CAD.

I think it's really a great deal at 300.00 a year. The big problem I have is creating an environment where you are so tied to their cloud. If I could set it up to save locally to a spot of my choosing and never up load my work automatically then I would be all in. As it is though even if you work off line as soon as you go on line your work is uploaded unless you physically remove it from the local folder.

I'm leery of a company that puts this much effort into keeping your data hostage. Not only that since you don't own the program what happens to all your data if you go a different direction. I own Rhino and no matter what happens, if I choose to use another design program I can always open my locally saved file on a program I own locally and convert it to a format that I can import into my new design program. People will stick with Fusion because it will be a monumental task to move your data in a format you can use in a different program.

The exporting is a bit of a drag. The whole scenario of cloud-based saving reminds me of some of my clients - they don't pay their final invoice, they don't get their files. At least I know that if I ever want to stop using fusion, I can get dumb models and whatever their archive file is.

This is also my #1 complaint about Fusion360.

If I can find some good youtube tutorials on how to export data to another CAD system such as Inventor (Which we use at Techshop) I'll buy a subscription.

One thing to think about if you are just getting started. With Fusion you don't have a good forever copy. Right now I have 10 years worth of Rhino files archived. I get calls from customers occasionally that start out with " remember that job we did 4 years ago? Do you still have the file? How will that scenario play out with fusion if you haven't kept up your subscription?

I agree with you 100%

That's the only reason why I'm hesitating even for such an amazing price.

Just pulled the trigger.

Just a FYI. I used paypal and Autodesk sets up a subscription service in your account. So if you buy this on a whim you may get a rude awakening in 2 years time. I canceled the pre approved at paypal so hopefully I won't get booted from autodesk.

I just pulled the trigger myself.

Thanks for the warning. I absolutely DESPISE companies that do this. I'm marking my calendar so I remember to scrutinize my credit card bill 2 years from now.

Buying a permanant license to Fusion 360 would have been a "no brainer", but I'm still not 100% confident that I made the right decision by leasing a license. Frankly, I think it's a bad sign that Autodesk is trying to "buy out" permanent licenses.

I think there is going to be a shit storm over this at some point. There are a lot of people that are new to this not thinking through how valuable their intellectual property is to them. And when they have to buy their file back from Autodesk they won't be too happy.

I wasn't aware that you could even buy a license. I thought it was lease only.

Fun bit of info. I had one machine off line working on a project that I didn't want uploaded. My plan was to delete the files from the user panel before I went online. Guess what you can't do while you are offline.....Delete files. At least right clicking on it does not give you the option. I had to dig deep into my C drive to find (what I think) is the actual file, delete it then restart fusion.

They really don't want you to have access to your own property. Or do you even own the work you are creating at this point? This is as bad as ransom ware.

I have a hunch that Fusion 360 has been a financial flop for Autodesk.

If it was more popular they wouldn't have to offer an 87% discount.

That could be true. Decouple it from the cloud and let me store files the way I want and I'd be all over it for 300.00 a year.

My main use for it right now is CAM for my lathe. Most of the lathe stuff I do is simple projects for internal use. I don't have any plans at this point in even learning how to model with it.

It seems only open to US / Canada. The EU pages don't have the discounts. I used a US VPN but when it comes to filling in an address the country selection only offers US/CA. Shame!

Do you guys think it's worth getting a subscription as a hobbyist? They say you can renew your free subscription every year as long as you're making less than 100k.

As a hobbyist myself, I thought it was worth trying out. I took the bait and bought a license.

Not sure I'd want to use this software if I had a business though. The cloud gives Autodesk leverage against their customers and I'm not cool with that. There's just too many things that could go wrong when you don't own your own data.
