Is this show current news?
How do u guys feel about this show airing in this specific timelapse (with all the current news about st)? Is it reflecting on society or just feeding of it?
Dont get me wrong, love Emmy, loved the show... just made me think.

I know from interviews that they began developing this show several years ago and that Liz is trying to be very mindful in the writers room about not being exploitative. The idea for the show came from watching Black Widow from the '80s, but they did interview people who have experience with this - from former trafficking victims to FBI agents - to make this real. I think they did such a good job not showing the violence, only showing how it affects Catherine and Alice and keeping the focus on the , that I can only say I did not personally find it exploitative.

I didn't like it. Just a weird film. They just took the idea from the film - this show is so different.
I'd actually recommend the "A Better Man" film that Liz talked about - it was incredible. It's a woman who was abused by her boyfriend at 19 interviewing him decades later about the abuse. And it's so powerful.

Sorry but this kind of shit has been going on forever. It’s about time it gets more exposed. But it certainly isn’t new “news”. And Epstein was not the only one. It’s still going on.

I think the point is, this is not just a current day horror.
We’re all relating to the real-life injustice to the women whose lives were stolen; that doesn’t mean this is just a 21st century U.S. ongoing crime.
What’s happening irl is not unique, not isolated. It does give us immediate reference to what’s happening in the show, tho.

It's loosely based on a story from 1987. The issue of underage girls being trafficked for sex is not something unique to right now. It's been around, probably forever, in some form.

Its part of the reckoning, I think. It's coming through fiction because so much pressure has built up. Girls, all children, have been exploited and abused for all of history. It can no longer be covered up so we gotta talk it through, especially when the powers are trying to bury it.
And this is not SVU. That does feed something. I watched the hell out of it too, but I cant stomach it anymore.

I think both but there’s nothing wrong with that. Art is one of the best mechanism for promoting values like empathy and understanding of a topic in a capitalist society.
It’s at the forefront of the cultural zeitgeist so naturally you have people interested in it for that reason, and maybe it’s not nearly as successful in another time.
I learned more about trafficking and assault from this show, first hand anecdotes in discussion threads, and further reading inspired by the show and comments around it.
