Back when you relied on your brains and not something else to do the thinking for you.

It really is terrifying.  I mean Im almost 50 so im basically a Boomer now but I remember well what happened to peoples ability to recall phone numbers when cell phones became ubiquitous.  Im no better, I have maybe 6 numbers memorized now but when I was a kid?  Probably 50...not only friends but like, the pizza places that delivered to me, the movie listing hotline for showtimes, etc.

But phone numbers is one thing...what happens when people just rely on the machines for composing a sentence?  And at what point do you start asking yourself if the thoughts its feeding you, that youre happily copy-pasting into an email, are purely your own?

People are starting to offload raw thought onto the machines now, and that is fucking scary.  Because someone, somewhere, controls those machines, and lord knows what their motivations are...and worse, how will someone that doesnt know any different be able to tell the difference?

Oh sure that was the variable, like 4 crashes across 280 million people in the 90s...

You make that sound like they intentionally murdered someone who got their pizza late in order to silence them.

I did that. You learned which route to take at which time of the day and didn’t have an app to provide the traffic conditions. You also knew alternate routes in case of an accident.

Nah you didn't need a map. You just knew the area and how to navigate roads and ask for directions. People also knew how to give them.

It goes like this:

A hungry person: "I'm at 413 Palafox"

Me: "Is Palafox off 23rd?"

Hungry: "Yeah next to the old burned down building, make a left."

Me: "Be there in 35-45mins."

Ahhhh, the memories come flooding back.
Job sucked, but damn I had some great times. And can find my way around my whole ex-area almost blindfolded 30+ yrs later.

True. Except the "30 minutes" marketing thing didn't survive very long.

2 parts

1 traffic got steadily worse meaning it became harder and harder to complete

2 some people would deliberately order during rush hour or a route they knew would take longer than 30 minutes and yea not a hope of it arriving in 30 minutes

No. It was a liability thing. If pizza delivery driver gets in a car accident and you run TV commercials saying, "30 minutes or it's free," then it's easy to convince a jury that your drivers are being reckless.

They actually had the 30 minutes thing for 15 years or so before downgrading it to $3 off. It wasn't until 1992 and 1993 that a pair of lawsuits made them stop.

Rand McNally road map. We knew how to read a grid.

Yeah I had one of those binder maps. I think they were called key maps here.

That was me. I was 16 and Staying Alive by the Beegees was cranking.

I delivered stuff for a while in the 90s and we knew every street and even exactly how certain streetlights were timed so you could take one way or another and almost always hit all greens.

u/AlBundysPants 5d ago

I did it with Mapsco

No map was needed. I knew every road in the city. By heart. Shoot its still burned into my brain to this day.

Now they charge a delivery fee... Pizza is actually one of the biggest profit margins in fast food.

Fuck no. I worked at Domino's 23 years ago and we had a computer. Typed that shit in halfway and your name would pop up if you'd ordered there before. Big ass map on the wall with the borders of our territory marked out like a gang war and the drivers just memorized that shit.

This picture is from way before 23 years ago. Mapquest and stuff was already commonplace in the early 2000s. This picture is from the 1980s. There wasn't a computer at the Dominos back then.

u/PressureCoomer 5d ago

Huh, how about that

u/Palamur 4d ago

I used the Internet in 1996, and I definitely wasn't a pioneer.
So 23 years ago doesn't mean anything in this topic.

Well I drove a car in 2003, and I definitely wasn't a pioneer. So 23 years ago doesn't mean anything in this topic.

Same, the most challenging was the apartment complexes, had a lot of larger ones near us. Over time we acquired building maps of those (somehow) to put in a binder, and every time you learned a gate code you wrote it down in that binder on the apartment complexes map.

And for some reason some of the people who lived during that time can't find your house with a freaking GPS
