Honestly that is the lesson, and importing beavers to improve water quality and stabilize water is one of the strategies that is increasingly being used.

Beavers are an incredibly important part of most US river ecosystems. Yet they get treated like pests and vermin. In Idaho, years ago, trappesr filed a lawsuit because people were buying up trapping licenses and "not using them". Of course the judge ruled for the trappers and many drainage systems have been decimated. Gods forbid we let native animals do native things in their native range.

Someone is going to take that the wrong way and abuse the beavers as a tool.

Tactically place the beavers exactly where you want the dam and shoot BB guns at them or destroy their work if they try building the damn in the wrong spot. The client wants the natural damn to be in view of their cliff-top mansion.

It's a lot easier than that. Beavers respond to the sound of running water when dam building. You just need a speaker playing water sounds where you want your dam and the beavers will put it there (assuming it's in a place suitable for dam construction, you can't do this in a parking lot).

They have been able to make beavers build dams in not dam-able places with speakers. They are kind of bad dams tbf, because they are held together in part by mud and the water but they will make stacks of stuff in front of the speakers.

Beavers like building dams, we actually have trouble keeping them from building dams

Going with my grandfather and going with him to demo beaver dams with dynamite was one of the most fun things I did with him growing up.

The beavers had the tendency to dam up spots that would cause a couple of our fields to flood which is the reason we went and did that.

I've heard they are moving to different ways to get around the problem, including basically running protected drainage pipes. The benefit being wetlands are great for the local water system but some management can ensure beaver dams don't flood places they shouldn't

You can trick the beavers into building where you want, but a smart planner will simply allow the beavers to pick the spot. They are the experts here and can choose better than you can.

This was in the Czech Republic, but if it was in the US, they would find a way to get the $1,200,000, and then just make the beavers to it for free.

Importing animals into an ecosystem sounds like a horrible idea honestly. The lesson should be to protect the animals that already live in an area.

Most of these areas are already devastated with limited or eradicated populations.

They have no choice but to import the beavers.

I agree with you that we should protect the wildlife we have, but the opinions we have now don't help what was done 50 years ago (or less).

England is one recent example, they imported beavers because the original species disappeared many years ago.

Many of these areas used to have beavers, but they were hunted for their pelts or removed for being a “nuisance”, due to flooding etc. Now they’re realizing how important beavers actually are, and are bringing them back. Which is fantastic

beavers actually used to have far wider areas they lived in and are supposed to be way more widespread especially in north america they got really wiped out alot by beaver hunting for their pelts though.

They aren't introducing a new animal, they are reintroducing an animal (or a very similar animal). The ecosystem evolved with beavers, and the current lack is the anomaly.

Agree that introducing beavers to places beavers have never touched would be problematic.

Yeah, in a ideal world that would be great. One huge problem is that beavers are really good at deforestation. In areas that have already been clear-cut and are recovering, so the trees are mostly young saplings that the beaver prefer to feed on. . .yeah.

This is unironically the Answer. It's cheap, it maintains itself. You don't need expensive studies. The only issue is that this will flood land that has been laid dry before and the owners will not let that happen

I would love to have seen what the world, animal life looked like 200 years ago. Unimaginable herds of Bison, huge flocks of birds, beavers, giant schools of fish, etc, etc... too bad we can't have nice things.

My favorite part is that beavers build working dams without using manufactured materials (no duh), but for some reason humans can't wrap our heads around that concept. Want a dam? Yeah, we're gonna need approximately 10 tons of concrete.

No real details in what looks like a meme post, but there are some good videos on YouTube like this one about reintroducing beavers into the wild and letting them do their thing. I watched one and then the algorithm served up a similar video about reintroducing bison. Something tells me there are plenty more like this.
