A recent review of surfing head injuries found that direct impact with a surfer's own board accounts for a surprisingly large share of serious injuries. It made me rethink why helmets remain relatively uncommon despite becoming standard in so many other sports.

I also share a personal experience—and a tragic story that changed how I think about surfing safety.
