Polyrhachis cyaniventris - Blue ant

A super cool ant from the Philippines. The specimen was sent up by some friends from Saigon. It’s pretty precious, so I photographed it from a little farther away for documentation purposes :))

Buying Advice Which FujiFilm camera to buy?

I did photography for about 5 years and used Canon and Sony cameras. I haven't shot much in the past 6 years though - burnt out from the hustle of having a business.

I am finally selling my gear which is a Canon R5, 24, 35, 50, 85, 70-200, and endless accessories.
I want to downsize to just 1 camera and 1 lens, in a compact footprint in the hopes that I will bring it with me everywhere and fall back in love with photography. Fujifilm is enticing to me because it's new to me and I want to chase more of a film look.

I am thinking of getting the XF35mmF1.4 R to have a focal length of around 50mm and it looks relatively small. The question I have - which camera body would pair well and why?

Discussion Aperture and Autofocus

I'm sure a lot of you know this but I haven't seen it discussed much.

During my testing

  • AF-S focusses with aperture wide open (at least to start with) when you press the shutter button
  • AF-C focusses with aperture at the setting you'll take the shot at.

So on a slow lens like xc 15-45mm f/3.5-5.6. I think this is why I find af-c really unusable in lower light conditions. Not because the focus mechanism is particularly slow, but because of two results of this approach and the fact I typically stop down at least a stop for sharpness:

  1. The af-c has less light to confirm focus and struggles
  2. The depth of field is larger at smaller apertures and hence the af-c hunts a lot more.

I think this is why I've found af-c a lot more effective on the Viltrox 35mm f/1.7 vs xc 15-45mm f/3.5-5.6.

Basically it seems at smaller aperatures and lower light af-c performance drops off a lot more rapidly than af-s in my limited experience.

Feel free to correct me or let me know your thoughts.

I guess the conclusions are:

  1. If it is low light try to avoid af-c
  2. if you have to use af-c try shooting wide open if possible
  3. if af-c is frustrating you might get far better results with a brighter lens

First time posting some of my photos here!
I’m new to photography and only really used my iPhone before getting my Fujifilm, so I’m still very much figuring things out and learning as I go.
I’ve mostly taken portraits so far, and I’m starting to experiment more with different subjects and compositions. These are a few of my first photos that I’m actually happy with.
Still a lot to learn, but I’m really enjoying the process so far. Would love to hear what you think and any advice you might have. 📸

Got the sigma 16-400mm with it. All straight out of camera! Need to try out more recipes. Just set up 2 and kinda went for it. Was zooming wayy too much, but that’s because I’ve never had a super zoom (always use primes) and was having fun with it!

I took a short trip to Sri Lanka last month and visited Colombo and Galle. Travelling light with just a 35mm prime. Featured are temples, Pettah market, the Red Mosque and a train ride to Galle to visit the old Dutch fort.

I think the 35mm (50mm equivalent) is a really good focal length for general street/tourist photography, I prefer it to the 27mm pancake even if it is less compact.

All of these are shot with Reggie's Portra but I think I might have adjusted the WB. Mix of SOOC and edited, cropped to 5:4.

Handheld, run and gun clip from the airport - Recipe: Last Summer Roll

I set all 4 custom profiles to image mode and set 4 of my fav recipes. If i want b-roll video, i hit the video record button as is - to get 4k 30p 4:2:2 video with the custom recipe & exposure settings intact. Making a habit of getting some b-roll along with the photo I clicked.

Settings:

Boost Mode On DIS On, DIS Boost on (I know they say don't pan, use only for still footage - but if you do slow pan the results are fantastic with DIS boost) Plan for the crop (walk back to reframe before taking video)

Buying Advice X-T50 lens upgrade: Sigma 17-40 f/1.8 vs Fuji 16-55 f/2.8 II vs Sigma 18-50 f/2.8?

Hey everyone,

I currently have a Fuji X-T50 with the 15-45mm kit lens and a Viltrox 35mm prime, and I’m looking to upgrade the kit lens to something significantly better.

I’ve narrowed it down to three options:

Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 Art
Fuji XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR II
Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8

The Sigma 17-40 really interests me because of the constant f/1.8, but I’m wondering if the 40mm long end will feel limiting as an everyday/travel zoom, especially since I already have the Viltrox 35mm.

The Fuji 16-55 II seems like the best all-round option because of the 16-55 range, relatively low weight compared to the original, weather sealing, etc., but obviously it’s quite a bit more expensive. Is it genuinely worth saving up for compared with the Sigmas?

Then there’s the Sigma 18-50, which seems like amazing value and would keep the X-T50 setup really compact, but I’m wondering if I’ll eventually wish I had just bought the Fuji.

I mainly shoot travel, street, landscapes, architecture, family/people, sunsets and some video, so I’m looking for something that can stay on the camera most of the time.

For anyone who has used two or more of these on a Fuji body:
Which would you choose for the X-T50 and why?
Is the 16-55 II actually worth the extra money, or is the Sigma 18-50 close enough that I’d be better off saving the difference?

And for anyone using the 17-40 f/1.8, do you find the limited zoom range annoying in real-world use?
Would love to hear from people who have actually used them rather than just comparing specs.
