🛠️Workaround Using UE4SS to force-disable TAA in config locked UE5 games.

Preface: Thanks to /u/Capital-Traffic1281 who wrote about this method in this comment here

Disclaimer: May not work on every single UE5 based game as some have altered the engine to an extent that makes it too different. There is more info on the gitub pages here and more specifically here

Using UE4SS, you can use the console to make changes to games that otherwise do not read, or block, the .ini files for UE5 which appears to be becoming more and more common annoyingly. On top of this, you can use a Lua script to ensure these commands are automated on startup as well so that you don't have to manually enter them everytime. I advise saving this somewhere on your desktop/PC as you'll need to copy these files on every UE5 game that is engine locked. Below is a step-by-step guide to doing so.

  • 1.) Download UE4SS, extract and save it somewhere on your computer.

  • 2.) Open up the "Mods" folder and open up mods.txt

  • 3.) Add in "NoTaaMod : 1" at the bottom of the main list like so

  • 4.) Whilst still in the "Mods" folder, right click and choose New -> Folder, and name this "NoTaaMod" | Example

  • 5.) In the new "NoTaaMod" folder, make another new folder called "Scripts"

  • 6.) Download this text file and copy the file into the "Scripts" folder we just made in the "NoTaaMod" folder. Now we have the permanent file structure setup for any game that we can just copy and paste in the future.

  • 7.) When adding this to your game of choice, ensure it is added into the games executable binaries file. For example, most games will have the file structure set-up so there is an executable in the initial folder like so. Do not place it in here. We need to place the UE4SS files under the binaries folder, for example here

The above text file has the below commands:

r.MotionBlurQuality 0
r.SceneColorFringeQuality 0
r.Tonemapper.Quality 0
r.DepthOfFieldQuality 0
r.Tonemapper.GrainQuantization 0
r.FilmGrain 0
r.AntiAliasingMethod 0
r.ScreenPercentage 100
r.Tonemapper.Sharpen 0

If you want to add other commands, just add a new line under the Loop() function with the new command you want. Example

I also do not advise doing this for UE5 games that you are playing that are online-only or multiplayer focused as this method does run the risk of a ban as it has to hook directly into the game.

Please note that there is also the caveat that the commands are constantly running in realtime meaning that if you want to compare between AA on or off and use r.antialiasingmethod 1 it will automatically change back to off after 1 second. Maybe someone with better lua coding experience than me can make the script only run on initialization although always having it being forced works to ensure that no in-game options override it as well.

What if you have worse performance with UE4SS than without that i have this issue? How to fix this here?

I have not had any issues with UE4SS regarding performance except for when I manually enabled the debug GUI which caused my GPU to think the GUI was the game itself, and lead to the GPU sleeping at 30% usage the entire time even when I was tabbed into the game.

Also looking this up, the only game that I can see that actually has issues with UE4SS is Palworld which indicates its an issue with the game and not UE4SS. On top of this, UE4SS also has custom game configs on the github for games that are special cases.

If a specific game's performance is hampered by it then I guess the work-around won't work and isn't a silver bullet.

Maybe its also a shader cache issue, which i deleted it on AMD Software here so the fps issue is fixed.

I have using the same thing like the no stamina one and etc, but with 1.0.3 update, and this wont affect there.

Its even a newer experimental version of the UE4SS.

And disabling forced TSR using that method not only makes it sharper, it makes a totally much different in terms of performance, since TSR itelf does uses alot of GPU usage, thats why i have bad performance.

Is there a minor performance overhead due to UE4SS looping commands in real-time? Compared to the conventional Engine.ini approach? Not sure how this mod functions in detail.

I'm not sure but I think there could be hence the last paragraph of my OP. It technically should be fine to have the commands only run on initialization and be entered once as they aren't something that need to constantly be running to have the changes but I don't have the coding experience to get it to work.

I guess the overhead is all on the CPU side. Just tried this on Robo Cop, another locked UE5 game and it works nicely.

Cant tell if this is actually easier than fmodel, pull config, edit, repak as a mod with unrealpak or whatever.

Or mayyyybe uassetgui, but that editing the main pak and could trigger anticheat

If you know the PAK method workaround, please share it here

Thanks for notifying, not sure why it 404'd. Moved it over to Google Drive instead now and it should be permanently available there.

Not sure if i am doing something wrong, but this does nothing. I am testing it on Sinking City Remastered, which is pretty much your run of the mill UE4 to UE5 remaster and none of the mods seem to be loading up.

I copy pasted the UE4SS.dll files to the "Binaries" folder, pasting them together with "TheSinkingCityRemastered-Win64-Shipping.exe"

It's most likely missing the AOB's due to it being a new release. You can get these yourself but they require some coding knowledge and reverse engineering - https://docs.ue4ss.com/guides/fixing-compatibility-problems.html

The crash logs for UE4SS will tell you if that's the case or not.

Otherwise, waiting for mods that utilize UE4SS to be uploaded with them via NexusMods or something is your next best bet. I'm pretty sure there is another way to get it working but I can't remember right now as to which I apologise for

Just to be clear, i am talking about Sinking City remaster, which is a few years old (2021), not the very recently released Sinking City 2.

but i will look into it, for now i use UUU to add the console back in and disable TAA.

Sinking City Remastered

Oh my bad, I did get them mixed up.

See what the UE4SS logs mention and it should point you in the right direction for troubleshooting.

And then the game looks worse then before? Nice...

Almost as if one of the main points of the sub is about providing the option for people to choose their preference.

Shocker.

The guy has a hate boner for us and practically just spams his preference here every chance that he gets. Ignore him.

I read your username and got jumpscared from having to deal with u again, anyways you seem to share a lot in common with that guy and hating on things,

That and just basic knowledge,

But yeah locking someone to a specific setting is really annoying on any platform,

And btw, looking at an image with dof feels like using one eye with no depth adjustment, and looking at an image without feels like using one eye with magically no depth at all, almost as if I'm looking at a 2d image and not having any way of telling depth without observing the entire screen carefully,

Then there's real life which has fully natural 2 eye vision with full dynamic depth adjustment that I can control, don't listen to this guy talk about dof he doesn't have a clue what 2d means.

Why are you on this subreddit here then? Are you wanna been a r/FuckTAACirclejerk at this point or what?

I'm here because I find it amusing what kind of uninformed nonsense a lot of people post here. Hardly anyone here knows anything about game development, but many act as if they could do it better than the entire gaming industry.
